Arc III: “Return of Darkness”
Chapter I: “Dark Army”
Episode II: “The Army Descends”
“Triple Lightning Dragon Strike!”
Kyoto’s attack connected, and all three dragons bit down at once; steam geysered as the captain’s charred body tumbled into the sea.
Kyoto let his aura gutter out, settling back into his natural state.
I need to find Rayon, and fast!
Kyoto quickly dove into the sea, searching for Rayon’s aether signature.
[Five minutes later]
“Agh—!” Rayon hacked up seawater.
“Are you alright?” Kyoto asked.
“Y-yeah. Thanks to you… You saved me.”
“Don’t worry about it! Instead, can you tell me what’s going on here?”
“I’m… not too sure myself. All of a sudden, the island was under attack. I don’t even know where the enemies came from. They were already inside before the barrier went down.”
“Are you saying… they had inside help?”
“I don’t know. But it’s not impossible.” Rayon slowly started getting up. “We need to find the headmaster first… and Darc if we can. Where could that bastard be…” he whispered.
“I could go look for him.”
“No… the headmaster comes first. He’s our priority. Besides, Darc should be able to handle himself. Come on, let’s go.”
“Right!”
[Ten minutes later]
“No!” Rayon yelled.
They burst into the headmaster’s office. The walls glistened with crimson paint. The old man lay cold and lifeless—cut down by an intruder.
“Dammit…”
“…what do we do now?” Kyoto asked.
Rayon held his face with one hand and let out a deep sigh.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“We should focus on containing the threat. There are still officers fighting, and we need to back them up. We can’t just let these intruders walk all over us!”
“Okay, let’s go!”
The two of them went outside onto the campus. There were intruders everywhere, many of them using Demon Forms.
“Why are there so many Dystopians? I thought we were a lost race,” Kyoto inquired.
“I’m… not sure either.” Rayon turned to the other side. “Look! I think I see Darc over there!”
The two of them ran over to a damaged hovercar to see Darc lying on the side of its broken door.
“Hey—wake up! Darc, are you alright!” Rayon asked.
He was unresponsive. Rayon checked his pulse and breathing.
“He’s alive… get him out of here. I’ll cover you.”
“What!? I can’t just leave you here to fight alone! You’ll need my help! Everyone here is in danger!”
“No. This is our problem. Besides, I can’t have my friend’s kid getting hurt on my watch.”
“This isn’t just the UFA’s problem! This could be a problem for the whole world! So, it is my business. And my father knows I can take care of myself.”
Another intruder interrupted them—a man in a dark cloak descended onto the scene.
“You two must be the ones who defeated Sixy.”
The two of them raised their guards, eyes widening.
“And who are you?” Rayon asked.
“Me? I’m the Fourth Captain. And in case you’re wondering—yes, I’m much stronger than old Sixy.”
The man smiled deviously, the whites of his teeth stretching to the corners of his face.
This isn’t good… even if I could fight at full strength right now, I couldn’t even beat the Sixth Captain. And I don’t think Kyoto will be able to handle this guy alone. “Go! Get out of here right now!”
“No way! It’s too late now anyway. Let’s just fight this guy together!”
Dammit… he’s right, I doubt this guy will let him get away. “Okay, but follow my lead—and we go one hundred percent from the start!”
“Alright!”
“HAAA!” They roared, aether spilling into the air.
Still weakened, Rayon unleashed his Spirit Bloom. Kyoto flared his Spirit Ascension, wrapping himself in a Lightning Energy Cloak.
“Tier Two!” Kyoto roared, cyan-blue aether bursting around him.
Hmm… that kid is actually impressive… he must have been the one who beat Sixy… “That’s interesting. You’re pretty good, kid. Who are you?”
Wait, don’t tell him—! Rayon tried to gesture towards Kyoto, but he was too late.
“I’m Kyoto Lyte! Son of Akira Lyte! I’m the protector of Earth!”
“Lyte, eh?” The son of Akira Lyte? The Fourth smiled. This is too easy!
The Fourth blitzed the two of them, his muscles twitching with power.
“I’m sure you’ve seen this—our doping tech!”
He’s right! Rayon thought. “It’s just like what we saw almost twenty years ago from the A.S.S. Gang—but this…”
“Yes, exactly! Our new serum is even stronger!” The Fourth easily pushed them both back.
After only a few exchanges, Rayon was already winded. His injuries from his previous battle were too severe.
Rayon can’t keep up… Kyoto noticed. I don’t blame him, though. This guy is too strong… “Hey, Rayon.”
“Huh?”
“Let me take him.”
“What!? You know I can’t do that! Besides, how would you beat him alone!”
“No… I have something that might work… but there’s no point in us both dying here. I can hold him—get out and call for help. If there really is an entire army here, then we’ll need his help. We’ll need my father!”
I don’t even want to consider this… but logically, he’s right. “A-alright. But be careful!”
Rayon flew away from the island.
“Aw, how considerate. But don’t worry, I’ll be sure to catch up to your friend and kill him after I’m done with you.”
“Hmph, after I’m done with you, I’ll go meet up with my friends later. You’re going to die here.”
“Confident words for a brat. Come! Show me what you’ve got!” He took his stance, his eyes narrowing.
Kyoto held his fists close to his body and closed his eyes.
I have to focus… He took a deep breath in and out.
Aster-Volt Canticle: Aegis Volta…
“Lightning Energy Cloak… TIER THREE!”
A thick coat of lightning energy hugged Kyoto’s body, and a static bite crackled through the air.
“Oh, that’s not bad,” the Fourth said, raising his eyebrows.
“Don’t be impressed yet!”
Kyoto moved so fast he left only a torn ribbon of lightning in his wake.
“Lightning Flash!”
Kyoto became a bolt of lightning and speared through the Fourth, reforming behind him in a crackle of blue.
“Lightning Impact Fist!”
His fist blued under a heavy mantle of lightning as he hammered the Fourth into the sea.
A wide ring of water glowed with crawling static arcs. Then, a thunderbolt discharged from Kyoto’s knuckles, cratering the sea.
Kyoto plummeted into the crater as water began rushing in.
“As I said before… not bad,” the Fourth chuckled, pushing to his feet. He spat blood and smiled. “Now I’ll put you in your place—Demon Form, Level Two!”
His skin turned black, and his aura surged red.
There it is! Kyoto flinched.
