Arc III - Chapter I - Episode I: "Next Gen"

  Lyte of Utopia

  Arc III: “Return of Darkness”

  Chapter I: “Dark Army”

  Episode I: “Next Gen”

  [Eighteen years later]

The Earth has enjoyed several years of peace.

Even with the Cosmic Guard being weakened, no one dared to start trouble in Solaris as long as the God of Utopia was here.

  Until now…

  [Now]

A young boy slipped down the hall like a ghost, toes testing each board before it dared to creak. Cool paint slid beneath his fingertips as he felt his way through the dark.

Something feels off—like there’s a storm weighing down on the world. I have to go make sure nothing’s wrong. It’s my job to protect everyone while my father is gone!

He made his way to the end of the hallway, passing by a room with the door left ajar. Inside, two boys were sprawled out across a wide bed.

Whatever this is, I can’t let those two get involved… can’t afford to wake them.

He eased down the stairs, one foot after the other, and drifted toward the front door.

  He slipped outside—

Skyscrapers speared the dark horizon, windows tessellating like stars; hovercraft and bullet trains braided light, and a low electric hum, through the sky.

New Woodberry City… this place never changes. Even with the sun long set, there are still so many people out and about.

The boy looked side to side as he walked through the front yard’s gate, an empty road on either side of him.

Behind him, the words ‘Lyte Estate’ were inscribed on the post.

Air gathered under his heels; with a flex, he lifted—garden gravel whispering as white aether bled from his skin like mist.

He kicked into the sky, currents swirling around him as he soared into the night.

Below him, he could see dozens of homes around the estate.

For the sake of everyone in New Woodberry… no—for everyone on Earth.

He squared his shoulders—his brows furrowed and his fists clenched.

I’ll handle whatever comes my way!

He blasted off, trails of white aether flowing off him.

[Across the ocean – UFA Mainland]

  “Hold them back!” someone yelled.

The island was burning and on the verge of collapse.

Dark beings—born from the shadows—spilled across the campus, cutting through dojos and dorms; screams pinwheeled between collapsing roofs.

  “Purple Destruction!”

Rayon’s palm bloomed violet; a scything arc vaporized a rank of Shadowborn, heat washing his face.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

“Dammit, this is endless! Darc! Where are you?!”

He hovered over the island, watching the chaos unfold as a cold sweat ran down his face.

“Oooh, a lively one,” purred a fiendish silhouette, hoisting a struggling officer by the throat.

“Who are you? What are you people doing here?” Rayon glared at him.

“Who am I? I’m The Sixth Captain from the army of Catastrophe!”

Black sigils crawled under his skin like spilled ink; his grin showed too many teeth.

  “The what—?”

“You heard me. No need for me to repeat myself,” he grinned wide, “cuz’ you’ll be dead soon enough!”

[The sky above the Eastern Sea]

“I feel some weird aether signatures coming from this direction… I think that’s the UFA’s Mainland,” the young boy said, cutting through the sky like a razor. “If so, then my father’s friends should already be there.”

The boy advanced—unaware of what was about to unfold.

  [Ten minutes later]

  “I’m finally here!”

He braked hard—an island of fire yawning below like a dying star.

  “What… is that?”

As he focused his vision through the flames and plumes of smoke, he witnessed the chaos that covered the island—lecture halls collapsing, training courts scorched… people in panic scattering in every direction.

“I’ve got to hurry!” He said, maneuvering to descend, but—

“What’s this? Another plaything?” The Sixth Captain interrupted, throttling Rayon by the throat.

  “Mr. Rayon!” The boy shouted.

“Oh, you know this guy?” The captain gestured towards Rayon. “Yeah, he was alright. But nowhere near strong enough to beat me! I hope you’ll be able to show me a better time.”

“You bastard…” The boy’s fists knotted; his gaze went glass-cold—killing intent seeming to lower the very air a few degrees.

He doesn’t look very interesting… this might be boring, the captain thought to himself, scratching his cheek with bloodstained fingers and crooked nails.

“K-Kyoto…” Rayon rasped, weakly clawing at the hand squeezing his breath, “Run!”

“Oh, shut up!” The captain punched Rayon in the gut and then tossed him into the sea.

  “Rayon!”

Dammit! Kyoto’s temples bulged, his blood boiling. “I’ll show you not to mess with my friends like that!”

“Is that right? The hell you gonna do about it? You’re just a little brat!”

“I’m not a brat. And I have quite a few tricks up my sleeve.” Kyoto retracted his shoulders, taking a deep breath in and out.

He exhaled; white aether rose from his bones like winter breath. The sky seemed to tremble as creamy light billowed—orange motes snapping like cinders.

He wasn’t joking, this is more impressive than I expected!

“Ah—Spirit Resonance. Didn’t know you were a Kaelithian… this might be entertaining after all,” the captain said, tongue daring over blood-salted lips.

“This is nothing,” Kyoto smiled. “HAAA!”

His glow condensed into a tight sheath beneath the coat of creamy aether. The world sharpened; cloud-edge and embers went razor clear.

  “This is Spirit Ascension!”

“That’s it? I thought you’d be stronger.” The captain slumped, frowning. “What a shame, I guess your original yield was just sub-optimal.”

  Kyoto raised an eyebrow, “What?”

This guy isn’t even that strong. I can totally beat him! Wait… if he was able to beat Rayon without getting a scratch… then he must be hiding more power. Then I’ll have to test the water and see what he can do!

Kyoto gripped his fists, leaning forward as he braced himself. In a blip, he Aether-Skipped, erasing the distance between them.

“Too direct!” the captain barked, swinging his leg around into Kyoto’s abdomen before he could reach him.

But the ‘Kyoto’ that took the kick unraveled into blue filaments—static cracking over the captain’s shin. The real Kyoto reappeared behind him, his next art already casted.

  “Lightning Dragon Strike!”

A cobalt core spun in Kyoto’s palm—then hatched into a serpentine storm. The wyrm screamed in a thousand chirps as arc-teeth closed around the captain.

The attack flew towards the captain, crunching down on his body with lightning-based aether.

“Did you like that? My lightning clone,” Kyoto smirked.

“Ergh… not bad,” the captain said, dusting himself off, static still running through his body in patches. “I’ll show you one better. Dark Saber!”

A midnight beam scythed through the air, edges whistling like glass.

  “Lightning… Star Destroyer!”

A sky-blue lance punched forward—star-sparkle trailing in its wake as it bit the Saber and drove it back.

The captain's muscles bulked up, veins pulsing.

  “Rargh!”

He continued flowing his aether through his beam. He fought inch by inch until he was even with Kyoto’s.

Amazing—this still isn’t enough to push this kid back. I’ll have to use that.

Skin lacquered to obsidian; pupils burned ember-orange. Veins bulged as heat rippled off him.

  “Demon Form Level Two!”

The words hit like a verdict; his yield spiked, and he turned the tide of the struggle.

What!? That’s the same form that Reito uses! That means this guy is also Dystopian.

With his new surge in yield, the captain managed to push Kyoto’s beam back.

Dammit! Kyoto flew away to avoid the impact from the captain’s beam. This guy’s power has increased dramatically! Now it makes sense how he was able to beat Rayon! It might be too soon, but I’m going to have to use my full power, too!

“Ha!” the captain swooped in; a jabbed heel speared Kyoto’s gut and hurled him back.

“Augh!” He’s not giving me a chance to retaliate!

The captain rushed Kyoto, hammering a sequence of strong hits against him.

This isn’t good! I have to create some space…

  Kyoto lowered his guard.

  “Wide open!”

The captain clocked Kyoto straight in the face.

  What the!?

Kyoto smirked through the clean hit.

  “Static Shock!”

Ozone crashed like cymbals; hairline arcs of electricity webbed the air and seized the captain’s joints.

  Dammit!

“You’re wide open! Lightning Star Destroyer!”

Kyoto fired the beam, blasting the captain’s rushed guard.

That’s not enough? Then I’ll have to use it after all.

Kyoto channeled a flood through his meridians; a storm-mantle erected, spitting cyan arcs in all directions.

  “Lightning Energy Cloak!”

  “W-what!?”

As speed erased distance, Kyoto slipped through the captain’s guard.

  “Triple… Lightning Dragon Strike!”

Three wyrms spiraled out in braided helices, their roars harmonizing as they crashed in.

The ocean breathed steam. The island’s silhouette vanished in white.
