A man in a striped suit was walking down the hallway in the middle of a rge mansion, holding a hat in his hand. His steps were muffled by the red carpet that covered the entire length of the hallway. He walked past beautiful paintings, stands with armor, and various statues. It all felt like he had returned to the time of kings and knights.
He took a few more steps and stopped in front of the door in the middle of the hallway. He took a deep breath, raised his hand, and knocked.
“Come in!” A muffled voice came from behind the door.
The man grabbed the handle and opened the door. “Good morning, sir.” He greeted and entered the room.
“Ah, Jeffrey, is that you? Come in.” An older man sitting behind a luxurious desk with a lot of documents and papers on it smiled at him. He had gray hair and a perfectly groomed mustache that beautifully complemented the suit he was wearing.
“Sorry to interrupt you sir, but I have completed what you asked me to do.” Jeffrey said, standing in the middle of the room.
“Excellent. Thank you for the information. You may go.” The man said, returning to the documents on the table.
Jeffrey turned around but stopped before he could reach the door. “Sir, if I may say something.”
“Yes?” the man asked without looking at him.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. If it was anyone else, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but this? This is a big bite even for you sir.”
“I value your opinion, Jeffrey. But I’m not going to just give up. I know who they are and what they’re capable of. I’m willing to take the risk.” The man replied, pcing his pen on the table and looking at him intently.
“As you say, sir, but I want to warn you that when I told them, they weren’t at all enthusiastic, they were furious.”
“Hahaha.” The man ughed. “That doesn’t surprise me at all Jeffrey. But don’t worry I have everything under control. And I have something like an ace up my sleeve.” The man smiled while Jeffrey just bowed nervously and left the room.
After talking to Henry, we both returned to Anna’s office. First Anna took out what looked like an old-fashioned phone from one of the desk drawers. It was like going back in time to the st century. The phone looked old. It didn’t even come close to the smartphones I knew.
She started dialing a number and I watched with interest as she pressed the buttons on it. That’s when I realized that it was one of the first pieces of technology I had seen in this world. That is if I don’t count the lights and devices in the club. And to be honest, it didn’t really impress me until a new question bloomed in my head. What year am I actually in?
It didn’t take long for Anna to put it to her ear. The conversation was short. Just a few words were enough. “We need to meet.” Then she hung up and put the phone back.
It was so fascinating that I forgot that I was staring at her the whole time. She just looked at me and sighed. “Evelyn please sit down.” I turned and looked at the sofa where I was sitting before, while she just nodded. So I had no choice and sat down in the same pce again.
And so I sat there and did nothing while she was still going through her papers on the table. I started to get bored again. My headache still didn’t get better and this sitting didn’t help it in any way. The only momentary excitement was when Sofia entered the room.
She knocked on the door and walked in. She was holding more papers and some clothes and came straight to Anna without looking at me. But to me, their conversation was worthless. They were just talking about new dresses and what the girls should wear for the evening. I wasn’t interested at all, so I stopped listening until my name was called.
“Madam, if I may ask, who is Evelyn really?” Sofia asked in a worried voice. “She’s new here and she’s asking strange questions and doing whatever she wants. I haven’t even seen her since lunch. Who does she think she is? And actually, where is she now?" She continued while Anna just smiled and looked at me, who was sitting in the corner of the room.
“Why don’t you ask her in person?” Anna said with an even bigger smile. Meanwhile, Sofia turned and looked directly at me with wide eyes. The shock in her eyes was very satisfying. It was a combination of surprise and fear. And I gave her a small smile and waved.
“I, I didn’t know…” She started while looking me over. “What, what is she doing here? And what is she wearing? Who, Who…What is going on here?” Her confusion deepened with each question, as did her panic.
Anna smirked. “Sofia calm down. Breathe deeply.” She just looked at her and did as she was told. After a few breaths and exhales, she asked again.
“Who is she?” She looked at me.
Anna just stood up and came over to me. “Sofia, let me now formally introduce Evelyn, the third head of our organization.” We both looked at her but for completely different reasons. Me, because I didn’t expect her to introduce me like that. And Sofia, because she still couldn’t understand what was going on and I didn’t envy her that.
“The third head? She’s… the third head? But how? I don’t understand.” She remained silent and I could see on her face that she was trying to process this information. It was clear to me that it didn’t make sense to her. My behavior so far hadn’t been very reassuring either.
“Yes, but you don’t have to worry about it now. So if that’s all, you can go.”
“But… why all this? Why was she introduced as one of us? Was it all just some kind of test?” Sofia looked at both of us.
I could see Anna struggling to think of an answer and so I stepped in. “Yes, exactly. It was some kind of confirmation and you all passed.” I said in the most serious tone I could muster. “There were some things but we’ll go over them ter.” I continued to think of a reason for my strange behavior.
Even Anna herself looked at me incomprehensibly. But for some reason, to Sofia that was enough and she nodded as if she understood and stood up.
“Then I’ll go.” She said quickly as if she was in a hurry and walked to the door.
“Of course, Sofia, see you tonight.” Anna said while Sofia just quickly opened the door and was gone. It was strange and so I looked at Anna thinking I would get an answer but I only got a cold look.
“What?” I asked.
“What do you mean by ‘what’? Why the fuck would you tell her something like that?” Anna replied.
“Me? I was trying to fix the problem you made yourself when you introduced me as some kind of third head. What is that anyway? And why did you do it in the first pce?”
“I thought it was a good opportunity to introduce you as a member of our organization.” Anna replied normally. “I didn’t know you had already done or told them something that contradicted what I just said. I thought it would take you a while to do something like that.”
“It wasn’t just me.” I said as I looked her straight in the eye, while she just sighed. “And how does it help that only Sofia knows about me?”
“Don’t worry about that, in a little while everyone in this building will know about you.” Anna smiled.
“That’s even worse, wasn’t the pn to be inconspicuous? Didn’t Henry say so?” I continued as Anna sat back down at her desk and I watched the door. “Shouldn’t I go after her? She was pretty eager to tell everyone, judging by how quickly she left.”
“That won’t be necessary. And as for what Henry said, he meant more so that you wouldn’t draw attention to yourself among strangers. It’s fine inside here.”
“What if there are informants here? From what I understand, the person we are going up against is your biggest rival. Are you not afraid of that?”
“Rival? No, more of a nuisance. And you don’t have to worry about spies or informants, if there was someone like that here, we would have known about them long ago.” She said confidently. Although she was taking it quite lightly considering how she reacted when she learned the information. But I didn’t have much choice but to believe her on this one.
So I continued to sit but soon I couldn’t stand it anymore and stood up. Anna looked at me. “Where are you going?”
“Umm…I should probably go too. I’m not doing anything here anyway.” I replied, hoping that Anna would relieve me of this boredom. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
“That’s out of the question, Evelyn. There are still many things to do before evening. We have to get ready.” I frowned because that wasn't the answer I was hoping for.
"And when does it all start?"
"Around eight, approximately. That's when we open." I looked at the big clock on the wall, which showed four o'clock. All I could do was sigh. It was going to be a long day. A long, boring day.
