It didn't take long and we both burst into Henry's office. The first was Anna, who didn't even bother to knock. She angrily opened the door to the room and looked at him. He was sitting at his desk and Jack was standing in front of him.
"Who does he think he is?!" Anna began with a raised voice.
"Jack, wait for me outside. We'll sort this out ter." Henry said calmly and looked at Anna.
"Umm, okay boss." Jack just turned and walked towards the door where I was standing. He looked at me and I just greeted him quietly with a smile. He just quickly looked away but I saw his face turn red. He walked past me and left the room and closed the door behind him. And I was left with an even bigger smile on my face.
During the silence for a while, Anna didn't calm down at all, and as soon as he closed the door, she continued. "Who does he think he is?! To call a council just like that?!”
“Anna, calm down and sit down.” Henry continued in his calm voice.
“Should I calm down? I’m more surprised that you can be so calm, after what you must have heard.”
“You’re wrong about that, Anna, I’m furious too, but I have no reason to vent it on anyone else.” At that, Anna froze, probably after realizing that Henry was right. So she just sat down in silence on the chair opposite Henry. “And there’s nothing we can do about it anyway.”
“There’s nothing we can do? Henry, are you listening to yourself? We have enough resources to defend ourselves, and you just want to sit there and do nothing?” Anna asked, calmer now.
“I’m afraid so. We can’t start making rash decisions now, because that’s what he wants. He just wants to provoke us into making a mistake. And so we'll just have to go there and find out what he wants. And then we'll decide what to do next.” He said, and for some reason, he looked at me. Anna also turned and looked at me.
“Evelyn, you can sit down, you don't have to stand here.” Then I realized that I had been listening to their conversation very closely and I didn't move at all. So I sat down next to Anna while Henry was still looking at me.
“So what are we going to do until then?” Anna continued.
“I don't know. I'll prepare the guys for all scenarios. And we'll see.”
“And what am I supposed to do? Like I said, I can't just sit around and do nothing.”
“You're right. Try some of your contacts. Maybe they'll know something we missed. Do you have someone like that?” Henry asked while Anna thought about it. I just felt like I should get involved too, I just didn't know how. So I got straight to the point.
“And what am I going to do?” They both looked at me again but remained silent. “I could help too.”
“Evelyn.” Anna spoke up. “I appreciate you wanting to help but I have no idea how you could.”
“I agree, you can’t help in this situation. The council is in three days, so we’ll try to figure something out until then.” Henry replied thoughtfully. And all three of us remained silent.
Their conversation was interesting, and I wanted to help, but to be honest, I had no idea what it was about. What the council was and why they were so afraid of it. I needed to satisfy my curiosity but I didn’t know if it was the right time to ask these questions. So I just sat there and was quiet and tried to piece together the information. Finally, someone else snapped me out of my thoughts.
“I know how Evelyn could help.” Anna looked at me. “She’s going to the council meeting with us.” And I thought it was certain that I would go to the meeting with them, but I guess I was wrong. But that didn’t matter now, because the conversation continued.
“You’re not serious! You want to take her to the council meeting with us?” Henry asked with a wide-eyed expression.
“Why not? She’s one of our organization members now. We can say that she has the same high position as us.” Anna announced proudly.
“Really?” I asked but was immediately stopped by Anna’s finger, who told me to keep my mouth shut and not interfere in the conversation.
“You want us to split our organization into thirds?”
“Not really, Henry. We’ll just take her there and pretend she’s someone important. If the three of us show up at the meeting and show that there’s someone else besides us who they didn’t even know existed. They’ll be confused if they see a variable they didn’t expect. That’ll make them more careful and buy us more time. It’ll be our game.” Anna smiled.
Now I was even more confused than before. I didn’t know how to react at all. It’s true that I wanted to help, but for some reason, I felt like I was being used a little at this point.
“I don’t think so, Anna.” Henry continued. “It’ll be very suspicious when they suddenly see a third person they’ve never seen before. What if they see through it?”
“Henry, what’s our specialty? It’s information. And if we’re so good at finding information, they would think we are even better at hiding it, right? So you don’t have to worry.”
“I don’t know. It’s very risky, to be honest.” Henry said, not very enthusiastically.
“Henry, we have three days. That’s more than enough time to prepare.“ She said and looked at me "And what do you think, Evelyn?” And I no longer hoped that they would want my opinion.
“I wanted to help, that’s true, but to be honest, I don’t really know what’s going on.” I said honestly.
“Well, I think we can expin it to you. In three days, on Monday, there’s a meeting of the council, of which Henry and I are members. We would love for you to go with us.” Anna tried to expin, but she only said what I already knew. I feel like they’ve seriously forgotten that I can hear everything they’re talking about.
I looked at her and then at Henry, who didn’t look very happy about it all. I didn’t know if he was unhappy with Anna’s pn and that I was in it, or with the situation in general. So I just wanted to make sure they were serious. “Are you sure Anna? As you know, I haven’t even been here a day yet. I hardly know anyone here and no one knows me.
“The fact that no one knows you is why you should go and why you’re perfect for it. Your persona will be our advantage.”
“Advantage? We don’t know her either, Anna.” Henry snapped grumpily. And I knew he didn’t agree with me being there. He didn’t trust me and I’m not surprised. But Anna did for some reason.
“Come on, Henry. You have to admit, it’s a promising pn.”
“Maybe, but it’s also quite dangerous. And if it doesn’t work out, there’ll be a problem.” Henry threatened.
“And do you have a better idea?” Anna asked and he just looked away. “I thought so.”
She looked at me with a smile. “Evelyn, in three days we’ll introduce you as the third member of our little organization. But don’t think that your duties will end there. It’ll just be for a show. You’re still my repcement, remember that.”
I just nodded and smiled. “Try to keep your cool and not draw too much attention to yourself. Especially not tonight.” Henry finished.
“Great, so we’ve agreed. We have three days to prepare, that should be enough. Let's go, Evelyn, let Henry handle his part, we’ll go handle ours.” She stood up from her chair and walked to the door and I followed.
