“So, are you coming?” Anna snapped me out of my thoughts.
“Yes, of course.” I quickly stood up from my chair and continued to follow Anna.
On the other side of the salon, she walked through something like curtains and announced. “Girls, I’d like to introduce someone to you all. Evelyn, come here.”
So I walked to the other side. There was a rger room with people in it. They were all women of different ages. Some looked like they had just turned eighteen, and some were already grown women, all wearing casual clothes. Some were sitting at the huge dining table, some were standing, and some were sitting on sofas. They all stopped what they were doing and started looking at Anna and me. Then, they all walked closer to us.
“Girls, this is Evelyn. From today on, she will be working with us and living among us. I hope you get along well and if not, don’t forget the rules. I don’t want to see any arguments. Is that clear?!”
“Yes, ma’am!” They all said at once, without hesitation like soldiers.
“Very well. I don’t see Sofia among you. Where is she?” Anna asked.
“She’s probably in the back. Hey Sofia!” A bck-haired woman, probably the oldest, shouted.
“What?!” A voice came from somewhere behind.
“Madam is looking for you!” The same woman called out and shortly after that a short young woman in something like a tracksuit ran out of the back hallway. She had long red hair and a stunning figure that contradicted the rge meat sandwich she was holding in her hand.
“Were you looking for me?” Sofia asked. And she pced the sandwich on the table next to her.
“Yes, I wanted to introduce you to the new girl. Sofia, this is Evelyn. Evelyn, this is Sofia. She’s in charge of the girls and she knows how things work here, so direct any questions to her. And you, Sofia, you know what to do.”
“Yes, Madam.”
“Well, when everything is clear, I have to go. I’ll see you tonight. Bye, girls.” Anna said and started walking away.
“Goodbye, Madam!” They all said again together with Sofia at once.
“Bye Anna.” I said a little te.
At that moment Anna stopped, turned her head, and looked at me with the same strange expression. She looked at me for a moment and then just turned her head back and left the room.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you all.” I turned and looked at the girls, but I was taken aback. Each one was looking at me. Some had their mouths open, others had expressions on their faces as if they wanted to ask me something, but they all looked surprised.
“Umm, what happened?” I asked confused.
“What happened?!” Sofia said in a raised voice. “You called Madam, Anna?”
“Yes? Well…That’s her name, isn’t it?” My confusion only deepened.
“Yes, but no one, except the boss, calls her that.”
“Hmm? Why?” I couldn’t understand it.
“Because Madam has a reputation, and it’s not a very good one.” The same oldest girl spoke up.
“Exactly.” Sofia nodded to her.
“She seemed like a nice woman to me.” I answered honestly.
“Well, she certainly isn’t.” Sofia angrily dismissed.
“But she introduced herself to me as Anna, why shouldn’t I call her that?”
“She did what?” Sofia asked in even greater shock. While the other girls also just looked at me in disbelief.
“Well, yes she…”
“No, no, no…” Sofia stopped me. “Let me ask you a question. Who are you?”
“I’m just Evelyn.”
“No! Madam would never introduce herself as Anna to just some Evelyn.” Sofia stepped up to me. “I’ll ask again. Who exactly are you, Evelyn?”
And suddenly I was in shock and speechless. Just like I hadn’t told Henry or Anna who I really was. I can’t just start telling everyone around me that I was sent here from hell by the Devil himself and that I’m his right hand and maybe even his wife. At that moment, they would lock me up in some insane asylum if they had one in this world.
“I’m just Evelyn.” I answered the same.
“Uhh…you know what? Forget it. I don’t need to break the rules just to find out who you are. Come on, I’ll show you where you’re going to sleep.” Sofia turned angrily and walked around the girls standing in front of us.
And so I followed her. But when I got close to the girls she passed, they all quickly made way for me. None of the girls wanted to even look me in the eye, the one I looked at quickly looked away. I don’t think I made a mistake somewhere, so I walked past them and followed Sofia.
We walked along a corridor with doors on both sides. It looked like a dormitory. We stopped at one of them. Number six. Sofia opened the door and went in, and I followed her right behind her. It was a small room with nothing except two beds, one wardrobe, and one table and chair, not even a window.
“You’ll live here. The left side is already taken, so yours will be on the right. The toilets and showers are at the end of the corridor, and the kitchen is in the main room on the right. Do you have anything with you?”
“No. These clothes are the only ones I have.”
“Hmm… Then we’ll find something for you ter.” She headed for the door of the room. “And one more thing. Lunch is at exactly twelve, so don’t be te.”
“And can I ask what time it is?” Sofia looked at the watch on her left hand.
“It’ll be nine.” She replied and headed for the door to the room.
“And Evelyn.”
“Yes?”
She looked at me. “Jack was right, they suit your eyes.” I just smiled and she left, closing the door behind her.
Alone again. This time in a small room. I didn't know what to do so I sat down on my bed. It wasn't a luxurious bed but it was good enough to sleep on. The pillow and bnket were made up so I took off my shoes and y down.
I thought about what I was going to do now. I was in some nightclub run by some guy I didn't know anything about and it seemed like I was going to start working for him. It was a very interesting start to a new world.
It's true that if it weren't for Anna, Henry would have thrown me out on the street. But since I was lying in bed I didn't have to worry about it anymore. So I just y there and thought out loud. "My powers. I really need to find out what they are."
