What the hell is all this.
John looked at his stats again, then at the Titles at the bottom.
I am suppose to have +10 to all stats but my VIT DEX and AGI are all ten or less...not that I know what any of those are...I think in DEN my Endurance was seven after I added the +2 to it...but this is still all Greek to me. Actually I probably understand Greek now if this nguage ability seems to work in this world.
Assess Mastery? What can I look at something and just know, yep that's a thing? or Monster Luck? I was already lucky apparently, so am I even more so now? Martial Arts? Well I took a few csses when I was younger but that won't do me much good when my body falls apart every time I exert myself. Magic control? I guess that means I can control magic? But isn't that what the DEN got cha..gut chaa...roulette wheel gave me?
He closed the screen. He didn't have time to look over this nonsense, not when there was a slightly annoyed blonde with a sword starring him down.
"Thank you. I honestly had no idea that was a thing. Why...why do we have these?" John asked her. If she was part of the church, maybe she would swallow her annoyance and help guide this poor soul. He grimaced at the ridiculous situation he was in, needing to lie to a person of God to get back on her good side. He wanted to see that cute smile one st time before they separated.
"The simple answer is God gave it to us to be able to grow stronger and help us defeat demon kind, a people who continue to wage war on humans. You would need to talk with a priest to get a more detailed description. I am a padin, not a preacher." She said, that small smile returning.
"Well thank you for telling me. Truly interesting culture you have here, I cannot wait to learn more about it."
Kururu came back just then, holding his guild card. She looked rather confused.
"Here is your card John-San. Though I am confused, how are you only level one at your age?"
Because this body only came into being a couple hours ago? God damn it Alec, why didn't I get some back story for this world.
"I am not sure. I never activated my status window until a few moments ago maybe? Commander Lumina told me how to do it, it was very informative." He said, treading water. He had no clue what to do in this situation.
"That is...unheard of. Well you do have a whole lot of weak magic affinities, but your holy magic is strong."
"I didn't even know I had magic until a moment ago."
"Anyways, your card is now registered to the guild network, so you can use it in any city that has a healers guild."
"Thank you Miss Kururu."
"Your welcome. Now is there anything else you need?"
"Well, I need to learn spells, is there anyone who can teach me? As I was telling the commander, when I worked as a healer, apparently what I was doing was what this country calls a doctor." then he quickly added when her expression dropped "I am not one, a doctor that is, but I was just helping others who were sick and injured."
"Well that is true, you do need some training to use your magic. I can-" She started but then was interrupted by Lumina
"I'll give you three options" She said, holding up three fingers.
"Option one, the crash course. Option Two, A loan. Or Option Three, work as an assistant." She said dramatically.
"In the crash course, you will study a spell tome and cast it repeatably until your magic runs dry, and you repeat the process, exhausting yourself completely until you learn the spell. The loan option, you'll go to school and study magic for three years but you will owe the healers guild one ptinum coin when you finish. The third option, work as an assistant, you will work at a clinic, doing chores while studying grimoires in your free time." She rattled off all the options off the top of her head.
Didn't she say this was a Kururu question a few minutes ago?
"Now Choose!" She ended with a fre, dropping her hands to her waist and standing in a superman pose.
John didn't have to think too hard about it. He looked over to Miss Kururu. "How much for a spell tome?"
She looked at him a moment, then ughed. "At G Css, you have access to the spells Heal and Cure. They are ten silver each. If you want to get other spell tombs, you need to raise your css level."
"Yeah, I'll take them. And can you point me to an Inn that is clean and reasonably priced. I'll study these at my leisure and come back when I get the hang of it." He pulled out his coin bag and paid twenty silver. He looked over at Lumina who was still standing there blinking. She wasn't expecting to be brushed off like that. He looked at her and smiled.
"Thank you for the options cutie, but I am too old to exhaust myself repeatably, I don't want to be in debt that much, and there is no way I am going to be someone's maid while I am trying to learn magic. I'll just rex at an inn and see how it goes."
Kururu handed him the books and gave him directions to an inn "Remember your guild dues are due at the end of the month. Come back for your renewal then. It is one silver at G Css."
"Will do. Thank you take care. You too Commander, thanks for all your help. I hope I see you around." John said as he left the building, leaving behind a still twitching Lumina and a giggling Kururu.
After John left, Kururu looked over at Lumina. She hadn't moved for almost five minutes, still trying to process what John said.
"Lumina-Sama, are you okay?" she said, then poked the padin in the cheek. "C'mon wake up. Time to get back to work."
"Hun?" Lumina said, then snapped out of it. "What...What just happened?"
She was prepared to pay for a tome and ten days of that mans stay at the guild to let him train for free. Hence why she made option one sound better than the other two. A few silver was nothing considering her stipend was one hundred gold a month, and she could gain the favor of this man who's crystal clear aura so intrigued her.
Instead, he shot her down, called her cute, then left the guild with not one but two spell tombs in hand.
"I didn't even get to say good bye...and he called me cute?" She was blushing. Men were always intimidated by the Valkyries, they were all women who trained relentlessly to become stronger, and she was at the top of that elite group. No man in any of the churches forces could compete with her in a contest of strength or combat prowess. Men always stayed away.
Yet this man, a level one no less, brushed her off like she was nothing. It was a weird feeling. She wanted to be angry and go track him down and beat some sense into him, but she...really liked the feeling his aura gave her. Maybe they would meet again some day. Yes, that's what she would do, wait until then, and then she would knock some sense into that man and make him in awe of her.
She turned back to Kururu "Yes I am okay, I just...needed a moment. I am off, thank you for your help." With that Lumina left the guild, going back on her inspection tour of Meritoni.
Kururu watched her leave, and giggled to herself again. The poor commander seemed to have developed a crush on that man.
She smiled, thinking he better watch out or he was going to be eaten up.
She froze. She just remembered something important. She had never seen someone with affinities to all magic schools before, but there was something in her training that mentioned something about a person with with affinities to all magic.
"Was that man a Sage?" She quickly wrote a letter to her supervisor. Then thinking better of it, wrote another one to his supervisor at the Healers guild HQ. Her boss would probably just sit on it and not action the information, then he would bme it all on her once HQ learned of this man. She would not deal with his incompetence again.
John woke up from a nap. He was lying on a bed at the inn recommend to him by Kururu. He met the innkeeper and his wife earlier, and negotiated a months stay for ten silver, with two meals a day included. They didn't have baths there, but there was a public bath house nearby that could be used for 25 copper. One hundred copper was equal to one silver, one hundred silver equaled one gold and so on.
He was also shocked to discover the ck of indoor plumbing, and how taking care of business was now a messier affair.
Nope not going to think about it.
The innkeepers name was George and his wife was Nina. She was the first women he met since reincarnating in DEN who had normal looks and body proportions. Well she is still an attractive woman, in her forties, brown hair and eyes, some freckles, a slim figure, small breasts. She was nice too.
Am I lusting over the inn keepers wife now too? What is wrong with me?
He almost considered going to find a hooker for the evening and just let off some steam, but he wanted to dig into these books. It appeared the heal spell was a basic spell that could heal minor wounds and abrasions. It could be cast repeatedly to deal with more serious injuries too.
The cure spell was what he was more interested in. It cured all aliments within the body, and he had high hopes if he learned it, he could cure himself in the High School of the Dead world.
"Shizuka would kill for these abilities...well maybe not kill...swat someone really hard maybe? I am not sure she would even hurt a fly. She was really adorable. I wish we had more time together."
He sighed.
"I still don't know what I am supposed to be doing here though. Like was I suppose to even meet that Lumina chick? Or was I supposed to go to school? I am not going to school with a bunch of fifteen year old children."
He sat up and opened the tome about healing. He had a lot of work to do.
Two weeks ter...
"Heal! Cure!" John said, his hand pced over the injury of a beast folk child. Green light emitted from his hand and encompassed the child, healing the poor kids broken ankle. He added the cure in incase there was any infections he couldn't see.
"Thanks Mr. Healer Sir." The kid said, the dog-like beast folks tail wagging rapidly.
"You're welcome. Now run along and tell your parents I said hello." John said. The kid was his st 'customer' at this time.
It took him about eight days to get the heal spell to work, but once he got the process down, cure came rather quickly the next day. He decided he needed to practice more though as it wasn't like clicking a button and the spell happening. It grew more refined every time he did it, and became easier to do.
So what is the best thing to do when you needed to train? practical training of course. So he went into the slums twice a day, and started healing people free of charge.
They all looked at him like he was crazy at first, but once they saw him heal a man who had a broken leg and not charge him, they would come to him in droves. Actually, he was almost overwhelmed the first day of doing this until a few beast folk adventures came to his rescue, and made the locals get in line. He thought he recognized one of them from when he came into town, the man who introduced himself as Bazan, was a white wolf beast folk. His two friends were also of wolf linage.
Once they saw he was being sincere, they would join him as guards, and when John was going to politely decline, they told him a dark truth about this world. There are people who might try to capture and ensve him, forcing him to heal for free. It wasn't a common thing in Meritoni, but as he was pretty much the only healer in town who didn't discriminate against beast folk, they wanted to make sure he was safe.
John had no such prejudices, and honestly thought a bunch of these people were beautiful, tails and all. Everyone he dealt with so far had been nothing but kind and caring.
So this is where John found himself on the fourteenth day since his arrival. Hanging out in the slums of Meritoni, healing people while sitting on a chair a few of the locals acquired for him, with his new beast folk buddies, Bazan, Baasura, and Sekiros. He would heal six or seven people at a time, then rex for a hour, and repeat that. He didn't get completely exhausted, he chatted and socialized with people. Life was pretty good.
"So today will be the st day we can guard you here John. We are being sent out on a job." Bazan said, sipping on whatever the name of the drink was they brought with them today. It was fruity and alcoholic, almost like a sangria, sans fruit. John was partaking as well, though he kept it to a minimum since he was 'working'.
Yeah fuck busting my ass, draining my magic dry all the time, going to school, or being someone's maid. This was clearly the best choice.
"Oh yeah? Where are they sending you off to?"
"Someone reported seeing a red drake nearby town. So we are going to go track it down and exterminate it."
"Red drake...is that like...a really big reptile with wings?" John thought about that dinosaur that flew over him shortly after his arrival here.
"Yeah, that's the one. Why? Do you know anything about it?"
My friends are the meatheads that are going to deal with that thing? It made him start chuckling.
John reyed what he saw the day he arrived.
"And you didn't report it?" Sekiros said.
"Why would I report it, it happened nearby the gate where the guards are. Unless they were blind, I am sure they saw it too." John defended himself. They couldn't have missed that thing, it was huge.
"Bah, those idiots would miss a demon going through the gate if they had identification. Well, we will head out that way tomorrow and see if we can find anything. Next time, report anything like that to the adventures guild. We tend to handle anything outside of the city walls."
Bazan leaned in. "You know, speaking of the guild, you should come by. We will introduce you to Brod, the guild master. He would be interested to know there is a healer in town that won't discriminate against beast folk adventurers. Maybe you two can set up some sort of deal to work there."
"Is it really that bad?" John asked honestly. They never really went in depth on the topics of discrimination the beast folk were receiving.
"Bad? No its not bad. The same services that a human gets for one gold, it would cost a beast folk ten, and if you cannot pay then you get sold into svery! That's not bad right!" Baasura yelled, jumping out of his chair and staring John down. His two friends jumped up and caught his shoulders.
"Easy, Baasura. You know I am not from here right? I literally have no idea how you have been treated or why people are assholes." He looked over at Bazan "Let's go meet this guy. Maybe he and I can work out a deal. I do have a small savings, but I can't work for free forever. I will come back down here once in awhile to help these people though. To that you have my promise."
With that, the group cleaned up, and departed for the Adventurer Guild.
