"Unfortunate Soul." A deep voice sounded in the mans mind.
"Huh...?" Where is that voice coming from? Wasn't I just shot? What is going on here?
"I Shall Reincarn- *Beep Beep* Huh? One moment...Hello?... Un Hun...Yep...Are you sure? But I had pns for this one...Fine. Different look but same abilities as this one would choose? Yes Sir. I understand."
Why does that voice sound like they are on the phone with their boss? Is this voice also a saryman like me?
"Sorry about that, apparently your Soul will remain unfortunate. Good Bye."
And with that, the mans reincarnation journey ended before it truly began.
John woke up. He was standing in a grassy field, the blue sky dotted with puffy white cumulus clouds. In the distance, a grey walled city stood out, complete with colourful conical roofs peaking over the battlements, brightly coloured fgs blowing in the breeze. He could see a gate with drawbridge and a moat as well.
He was truly in some sort of fantasy realm.
He quickly looked over himself. He had his blue scale armour on, the katana at his left hip, back pack on his back and a pouch of something in his hand. He opened it up and found a pile of silver coins. He tucked it away, not wanting to loose it. When he found a pce to stay, he would find a better method of holding onto his cash.
"Okay so now what do I do?" He mused. It was obvious he should be heading to the city, but he had no idea what he was supposed to do here. A dark shadow passed over him and brought him out of his contemption.
*ROOOOAAARRRR*
A giant beast flew over his head, its red body and wings much rger than a school bus. It continued its flight fpping off into the distance.
"Well fuck me! Do I need to fight and kill something like that? No thank you, I am out. I'm just going to head to town and find somewhere safe until I can return to DEN. I don't want to be hunting a frigging flying dinosaur. Zombies are one thing, but that could just swallow me whole."
He started making his way to the town, picking his way across the field slowly. He did come across a rge monster corpse, it looked simir to that flying beast but half rotted away. It stunk to high heavens.
Eventually he made it to the gate, quite winded. He was bent over at the waist, holding his knees and panting like he just ran ten miles. One of the guards approached him, a younger man with tanned skin and bck hair. "Are you okay Sir?" He asked John, holding out a hand to help him up.
"HAH...thanks. Yes I am fine, just realizing how out of shape I am. Don't get old son, it's a trap." John took the mans hand and smiled at him, giving a self-depreciating ugh at the absurdity of the situation.
"I'll try not to. I don't recognize you traveller, do you have any identification on you."
John stopped for a moment. This was a medieval society, what kind of identification would they even have? "Ummm...no I don't actually. I take it I need to some to enter this city?"
The guard stepped back but maintained his friendly demeanor. "Usually yes. You don't have some kind of guild card or anything?"
"No I don't. I am just travelling through, looking at different pces and seeing where I want to settle down." John lied. He doubted saying he was on a game show run by a bunch of deities watching what he did would get him very far.
"Do you have a trade? Or are you an adventurer?" the guard said, looking up and down at his equipment.
John thought back to the many jobs he held at one point or another. Unless someone wanted a gardener, there was not much he had that would pertain to this old of a society- WAIT, he worked as a Emergency Medical Technician at one point for a couple years. He could bandage wounds and set bones, even basic stitching if it came down to it. Would probably make him a doctor in this world. Hell just the knowledge of sterilization of equipment alone would set him apart from others most likely.
"I have worked as a healer before. Though that was a long time ago. Why do you happen to need healers in this city?" Yeah, that should work. Nice safe job at a clinic somewhere. No bloody dinosaurs flying around looking for their next snack. He wasn't a coward, but unless he was carrying a rocket uncher, he didn't want to be anywhere near creatures that size. Let someone with more muscle than brains deal with that thing.
"Wait here a minute please." the guard said then disappeared into the guard station. John waited patently, hoping he bullshitted the guard enough to be let into the city. All he really wanted to do was return to DEN and try another door.
After a couple minutes, the guard came back with an armoured female knight in tow. The woman was about six feet tall, golden blonde hair tied back in a ponytail, her long bangs framing a heart shaped face, sharp azure blue eyes that seemed to see right into your soul. She had rge breasts as well, probably around a F-Cup though it might be distorted due to her armour.
She had a interesting set of armour, a bck leather tunic with dark blue thigh high stockings, with a white cape with a red lining overtop. Around her waist was a padded brown leather wrap, with a white half-skirt attached to the bottom, covering her behind to her calves. One white steel pauldron on her right shoulder, a set of white steel gauntlets and bracers on each arm up covering up to her elbows, and a pair greaves that were also white steel. All the pieces had some intricate work done to them to make them look fancy though John wasn't sure how practical it would be in a fight.
I'm no swordsman, but wouldn't you want to defend your chest with pte mail as well. I'd take the disco ball armour I have over that any day.
She had her right hand resting on her sword, a fairly long weapon with a gold and red hilt and cross guard. She smiled at John
"Who is it who wishes to join a healing clinic?" She said to him in a clear, dignified voice.
John was the only one standing there. "That would be me. Good Afternoon, my name is John. John Wayne." he held out his hand to shake. She returned it.
"Commander Lumina of the Valkyrie Padin Regiment. Good to meet you. Now follow me, I'll show you to the Healers guild." She said, then immediately spun around and took off at a quick pace.
"Thanks" John said to the guard and started walking after her. There was no way in hell he was going to keep up though.
She will slow down in a moment. Worst case, I lose her and I get directions on my own.
John stepped into the town. It was fairly crowded, but they were both tall so he could still see her head bobbing up and down, quickly moving away from him. A man with pointy dog ears nearly ran into him, but John just patted him on the shoulder and kept moving.
The city was everything he imagined a prosperous medieval town to look like. Cobblestone streets, stone buildings, most everyone walking and not using a horse or a carriage. He saw a well and people carrying buckets of water, street vendors selling food, clothing, weapons and armour, just about everything and anything. It was noisy as hell too, the din of hundreds of people talking made almost a white noise throughout the square they were walking through.
Lumina did look back at John a couple times, then eventually fell back and kept to his pace. He nodded his thanks to her.
"You seem injured. Are you okay?"
John ughed. "Old injuries. I am not as spry as I used to be, but I manage. So how is it that a woman as young as you are, became the commander of a military unit?" She didn't look older than twenty.
"Haha, don't let my age fool you Mr. Wayne, I had a great mentor. I am one of the strongest active padins in service to the Pope, and while our regiment is small, it is the strongest of all the regiments." She ughed. Her smile was small but full of mirth.
"How about yourself. Armour like that isn't common around here. Were you an adventure?" her azure gaze felt like it was penetrating his very soul.
John thought for a moment about how to reply. He wasn't from here, nor did he know even what city or country he was in. He started to sweat a bit just realizing he received zero backstory for his character. Well, he would have to wing it.
"You could say I was an explorer if anything. I've been to many far off nds, which I include here as one of those by the way, and some of the most inhospitable locations known to humans. Now, I am getting older and deciding if I want to keep travelling, or find somewhere to settle down." He said. None of that was a lie, if trekking to the North Pole and going on family vacations wasn't exploring, what else would it be.
She continued to stare at him, making him a bit uncomfortable. "Are you okay?" He asked.
Startled she stopped starring at him and turned away blushing. "Sorry." He thought he heard under her breath something about an Aura but he couldn't make it out.
"We are here." She said, breaking the awkward tension. The building they stood in front of looked well made, white washed finished stone walls going up three stories with a white marble archway and several marble steps leading up to a pair of heavy wooden doors. Several gss windows dotted the exterior, giving the pce a noble facade.
"This is the Church of St. Shurule, Merratoni Branch, Healers Guild." She said, leading John up the steps in through the door.
Hah, least I know what city I am in now.
Walking into the building, it appeared to be a business reception area and not a church. The room looked fairly fancy, with beautiful hardwood floors, stone walls that were also finished and white washed simir to the exterior. There was a well appointed seating area on the right side of the room along with a bulletin board on the wall with a bunch of papers attached to it.
A stair case with a fancy hand rail snaked up the left side of the room to a balcony on the second floor, with several doors and a hallway leading somewhere else in the building. The back wall of the main floor also had several doors along with a reception counter, a book shelf stocked with many different books, and of course a bored looking receptionist.
Lumina strode to the middle of the room and spun around, flourishing her cape. "Welcome... to the healers guild!"
Dramatic much?
John smiled at her. "Thank you for bringing me here."
She smiled at him, that small smile making him feel good for some reason.
"Lumina-Sama?" the receptionist called, still looking half asleep though she did stand up, "Is something the matter?"
"Not really. I was inspecting the guard post when this gentleman showed up. He isn't from Shirule and has no identification, but would like to find work as a healer. Would you mind checking him out and making him an identification?" She said turning to the woman.
"Not at all." She said, then turned to John "Please fill out these forms."
John stared at the forms for a moment. He didn't recognize the text at first, but then suddenly his mind converted everything to English.
Handy. I didn't know they gave me that kind of skill. Wait they said something before I went to that zombie pce...bah I don't remember now.
He started working on the paperwork while the women kept talking. The receptionist was probably in her te twenties, early thirties. She had deep red, almost purple hair, grey eyes, and creamy white skin. She had a low cut white shirt on, with a dark green tie, tied to the center, accentuating her well-endowed bosom, at least DD Cup if not a E, the tops of which were exposed. She also had on a light green tunic which buttoned at her neck but left the rest of her torso exposed. Bck leggings and green gloves and a brown leather belt completed the outfit.
Some pervert must have designed it because in John's mind, it was nothing that should be worn in a professional environment...maybe.
His little guy, already stressed with the sexy knight, gave up and started pitching a tent. He leaned in closer to the desk to avoid any curious gnces.
"You know, if you asked, we could have sent someone. There was no need for you to bring him here yourself."
"Oh...I was coming to this area anyway. Don't worry about it."
John stopped writing. His name, easy enough, race, human, check. Age? What age was he here? He didn't think he was eighty three, but he didn't get to see what he actually looked like this time around.
Bugger it, I will just say thirty five, that was how old I was in that other world right? or was it thirty eight? Fifty?
"Having problems?" The woman asked, bringing John out of his thoughts. She had leaned forward across the desk, arms under her boobs, pushing them upwards to expose even more cleavage. His little guy was ridged at attention at the sight.
God damn it! I need to get id soon. I haven't been horny for years, and now that it is working again, it is all I can think about. Down Simba!
"Oh, just trying to remember my age. It has been a long time since I thought about it." He scratched in thirty five.
He filled the rest in. He just said he was born in Dals. He wouldn't be lying, and if asked it was just really far away from here.
She took the paper from him and walked to a back room. "Please wait here a moment."
He turned back to Lumina "Thank you very much for bringing me here. Do you happen to know anywhere I can get some work as well? I have some coin, but I tend to work while I travel to keep my cost down."
She looked at him "That would be a Kururu question. I am not from here, and just happen to be passing through the city for an inspection. Depending on your healing magic skill, I am sure there is a clinic in town that will gdly take you in for as long as you're here."
"Healing magic?" John said without thinking.
"Yes, healing magic. You said you are a healer did you not?" Her eyes narrowed.
Shit...what is happening here. I don't know any magic, just have some medical knowledge and training.
"I think we had a misunderstanding. I don't know any magic, at all. I treated people with medicine, bandages, set bone fractures, you know, taking care of them so their bodies could heal naturally."
"Oh you mean you're a doctor?" Her tone changed, and it wasn't pleasant.
"I mean I guess, I never called myself one though. Is being a doctor a bad thing."
"No...but there are some serious...tensions between the Doctors guild and the Healing guild. You are in the country of Shirule, home to the healers guild headquarters, so if you are ciming to be a doctor, your welcome may be brief." She said, now downright hostile.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. Now please focus your magical energy into this." Kururu came back and missed the tension between John and Lumina. She handed him a card with his name on it.
Magical Energy? How?
John took the card, forgetting his conversation with Lumina for the moment. Maybe his general magic skill will let him focus his magic...wait did he even have magic...he didn't remember. He focused on the card.
To his surprise it lit up. He could feel something moving under his skin, down his arm into the card. He had no idea what happened but whatever he did, it seemed to work.
The card dimmed, and read;
Healer's Guild Merratoni Branch
G Rank Healer
John Wayne
"Cool! It's like magic" He said.
"It is magic. Please let me have your card." she snagged it and took it back into the back room.
He looked over at Lumina "I guess I do have magic."
She looked...not amused. "Did you not know you had magic? At your age? God should have awakened your skills when you turned fifteen and became an adult. Have you not opened your status window?"
Status window? He opened it when he was at DEN, but how would she...wait do the people here all get status windows?
"What is a status window?" he asked earnestly. Pying the fool here might be his only option.
She looked at him like he was a complete idiot. Well how was he to know? He wasn't from this world. He was tempted to tell her just that but decided that caution was probably the safer bet for the moment.
"Just...say Status Open, and a screen will pop up in front of you. It will show you all the raw numbers of your level, stats and various abilities and skills. Don't worry, others cannot see your window."
"Status Open"
In front of him popped up a screen simir to the one in DEN, however it had slightly different information on it
