Chapter 8- Selfishness and selflessness

I open my eyes to a whole new surrounding. I'm on an old very uncomfortable couch. No one else is around me but there's one other chair next to the couch. It's very worn and it seem someone was just sitting there. I stand up and am about to walk out of the room I'm in when a man appears in front of me. His hair is white and both of his eye lids have rge cuts across them. He sits down into the chair and motions me onto the couch. I sit down and wait for him to speak but he doesn't. So I talk first."Uh... Who are you?" I ask.

"I'm the man who saved you." He answers bnkly.

  "And where are we?"

  "My vilge." He says.

He sits with a bnk expression on his face. He doesn't open his eyes once. It's hard to tell if he's blind or not.

"Can I ask you what had happened?" I ask him.

He tells me he found me by a destroyed camp of orcs. The orcs weren't nearby and he didn't find anyone else. I tell him I need to find my friends but he says it won't be worth it. Either they left me or they were killed. Neither would be good for me. He suggests I stay here in this vilge until I'm healed. Then I could head home.

  "I can't do that! I have a mission." I tell him.

"What kind of mission? You one of those 'heroes'?" He says.

  "Yeah... I am!"

"I don't like you heroes much. You shouldn't be so cocky."

He tells me I can stay or leave. He'll help best he can either way. I decide to stay for awhile. He's right about the others. They most likely died. And it was because of me. I'm selfish. I led them to a battle they didn't want to fight. We could have just left the vilge or even went another way. I wanted to prove I could fight. That I wasn't to be worried about. But I can't think like that. They're still alive. I can find them once I'm fully healed. The old man takes me out of his home. He lives a rge farm where he grows most of the vilges field. Mt job is to help him out. He then shows me around the vilge. It's small but gets a good amount of tourism. It's shopping area is probably it's rgest part. He introduces me to some people. Most of the people here are ex soldiers that got to injured or retired. I ask the old man if the same thing happened to him. He pointed to his eyes.

"I'm just lucky I have a knack for magic!" He says.

I ask him what he means. He know how to see using magic. But it's very blurry so he isn't able to fight like used to. I ask if he could teach me this magic. He says come back when I'm blind. He jokes around a lot during the day and everyone here was nice enough. We walk around for a good portion of the day. During the whole walk people kept asking him to help them. Whether it was carrying clothing baskets or getting something out of a tree. He helped everyone there. We finally got back to his house and he showed where I'd be sleeping. My head also took a lot of damage and it'll need to be healed soon. He knows healing magic but not enough to fully heal it. We may need to go to a nearby doctor. It's almost a full days walk away since the orc territory doesn't attract many doctors. I go to bed, tomorrow I have to help around the farm.

I got the best sleep st night then I may have ever had. The beds here are extremely comfortable. I took the first bath since I got here and the old man gave a change of clothes. I had been in the same tee shirt and sweat this whole time. I fit in a lot better now. He takes me out to the farm. My first task is to harvest anything that's finished. He has a full tomato section and said pick anything soft and red. I walk around the pnts gathering as much as possible. I get maybe a hundred or so tomatoes by the time I'm halfway through. He has like three hundred tomato pnts alone. No to mention his front yard of just wheat. I finish up and head over tot he house. He puts a third of the tomatoes in a basket and kept the others. He told me to head down to the vilge with the baskets and take them to a shop named Louis's fresh fruit.

I walk down to the vilge and look around for the shop he told me about. I find the shop. It's rge and has all kinds of fruits and baked good. There's a young man at the counter. He sees me with the baskets.

"Ah you must be Louis's new errand boy!" he says.

"Yeah, uh I just have these baskets." I tell him.

"Great. Tell Louis I said hi." He says.

  "I'll do that."

The old man never told me his name. He must be a Louis then. That's funny, he's blind and named Louis. Just like the man Ann told us to look out for. Maybe they are the same person. It's probably a coincidence. But he did say he was a soldier... I'll ignore that for now. I can deal with it once I find the others. For now I'm simply a farm hand.
