With three dimensional travelers now in your group and the CDC apparently hunting people with your particur traits, the stakes have just gotten considerably higher.
You leap into action, crowbar raised high as you charge the zombie shambling toward Asia. With a practiced swing, you bring the metal down across its skull, dropping it instantly with a wet crunch.
"Welcome to the apocalypse," you say calmly, wiping gore from your weapon onto the zombie's tattered clothing. "I'm Brad."
Asia stares at the fallen corpse with wide green eyes, her hands still glowing faintly. "Thank you," she whispers, her accent distinctly Italian. "This world... it's so different than mine."
You focus your appraisal ability on the newcomer:
[ASIA ARGENTO][Origin: Extradimensional (High School DxD Universe)][Magical System: Sacred Gear - Twilight Healing (partially compatible)][Abilities: Enhanced healing, limited purification, tent holy energy][Trustworthiness: Very High][Notable Skills: Empathy, medical knowledge, passive energy sensing][Special Note: Healing abilities may affect zombie infection]
"You're Asia Argento," Rin suddenly states, her ruby eyes widening slightly. "From High School DxD. That anime was quite popur in my world."
"Your... world had stories about mine?" Asia asks, looking bewildered.
"Welcome to the multiverse," you say with a wry smile. "Look, we should get moving. Would you mind trying your healing abilities on our friends? Kira here is partially transformed, and Howard was bitten but seems immune."
Asia nods earnestly. "Of course! I'll help however I can."
She approaches Kira first, whose mismatched eyes regard her warily. When Asia's glowing hands touch Kira's gray-mottled skin, an extraordinary transformation begins. The dead tissue gradually regains color, and Kira gasps as sensation returns to previously numb areas.
"It's working," Lyra whispers in awe.
Kira flexes her partially restored hand, her good eye wide with disbelief. "Feel... better."
Your appraisal confirms it: Kira's transformation has been partially reversed, now roughly 48% human versus 52% undead.
Asia moves to Howard next, pcing her hands over his bandaged arm. The green light pulses more intensely, and when she removes the bandage, the bite wound has faded to a silvery scar.
"Unbelievable," Howard murmurs, flexing his arm.
"Is it just me," you ask, gesturing to the three dimensional travelers now standing before you, "or am I the only one attracting people from other worlds? Is this happening everywhere?"
"Dimensional rifts require anchor points," Lyra expins. "Your self-developed magic system may be acting as one."
"Like calls to like," Rin adds. "Your magic has a unique signature that resonates across dimensions."
“So, maybe a space, dimension or protagonist affinity, not showing on my system?” You mutter and chuckle, as you pull out your phone, bringing up the map application. "We need to download offline maps before service fails completely. And we need to decide where to go now that Pinecrest is off the table."
"North seems wise," Rin suggests, leaning close to examine your screen. "Lower popution density means fewer of those... things."
You assign vehicles - Howard in the pickup, Kira and Asia in one cruiser, Rin and Lyra in another, yourself in the third. Before loading up, you turn to Rin.
"In your series, your Jewel Magecraft wasn't fully expined. Do you create the jewels magically, or need physical ones to work with?"
Rin sighs, pulling an empty velvet pouch from her pocket. "I need actual gems. Mine were depleted in the transition here."
You quickly search for jewelry stores on your phone. "There's one three blocks from here. Worth a quick detour?"
"Absolutely," Rin says with sudden intensity.
As everyone moves toward their assigned vehicles, Howard hangs back, keys clutched tightly in his hand.
"Brad," he says quietly. "I've been thinking. Maybe we should split up, cover more ground."
"What? Why?"
He looks away. "That CDC transmission... they're looking for people like me. Immune. I don't want to bring that heat down on all of you."
Before you can argue, Howard is already backing toward his truck. "I'm heading west, toward the mountains. If you're smart, you'll go east. Less chance they find any of us."
"Howard, wait—"
"Good luck, Brad," he calls, climbing into the pickup. "Take care of them. And yourself."
As his truck pulls away, you can only watch, wishing him well and making note of his westward direction. Your group has lost its first member, but gained two new ones with powers that might prove crucial for survival.
You lead your convoy of police cruisers three blocks from the station to Millridge Jewelers, a small boutique with its security gate half-raised. The storefront window dispys are shattered, but most looters would have gone for the obvious pieces.
"Let's be quick," you say, parking your cruiser at an angle to block the street. "Rin, what exactly are you looking for?"
Rin steps from her vehicle, ruby eyes scanning the surroundings with practiced vigince. "Anything with crystalline structure. Diamonds are ideal, but sapphires, rubies, even semi-precious stones will suffice."
You slip under the security gate with Rin while Lyra keeps watch outside. Kira and Asia remain in their cruiser, the blonde nun's hands glowing softly as she continues treating Kira's partial transformation.
"Most looters just grab the showcase items," you whisper, moving toward the back office. "The real value is usually in the safe."
The jewelry store's interior is a mess of broken gss and overturned dispys. As predicted, the obvious pieces are gone, but you notice several dispy trays tossed carelessly on the floor, small stones scattered underneath.
"Here," Rin breathes, dropping to her knees to carefully collect gems from the debris. Her fingers move with practiced precision, selecting certain stones while discarding others. "This one has potential... this one too."
You use your crowbar to pry open the office door, finding a middle-aged man slumped against the wall – clearly dead for days. The safe beside him stands open and mostly empty, but several velvet pouches remain, apparently overlooked in the panic.
"Jackpot," you murmur, gathering the pouches. Inside are uncut gems and stones considered too small for mainstream jewelry. Perfect for Rin's purposes.
When you return, Rin's eyes widen at your find. "These are... perfect. Raw materials have more magical potential than finished jewelry."
Back outside, you find Asia helping Kira from their cruiser. The transformation in Kira is remarkable – nearly half her face has regained its human coloration, and her movements are smoother, more fluid.
"How's it going?" you ask, approaching them.
Kira meets your gaze directly, her previously clouded eye now showing flecks of green returning. "Better," she says, her voice stronger than before. "Asia is... helping."
The nun blushes slightly. "It's working gradually. Each session reverses a little more of the condition."
Next, you drive to MobileTech, a cell phone store with its door ajar but surprisingly intact. Inside, most dispy models are gone, but the stockroom yields a treasure trove of boxed phones, chargers, and accessories.
"Everyone needs a way to communicate," you announce, distributing phones to the women. "The networks might not st much longer, but they'll work for now, and we can use them as cameras and for stored information regardless."
Lyra examines her device with fascination. "Your world's technology is... intriguing."
You unlock several phones on your pn, then bundle a dozen extras into a box. Focusing on your inventory system, you attempt to store the entire package at once. The box vanishes with a soft blue glow – your system accepts bundled items as a single slot.
"Efficient," Rin observes, watching you work your magic. "Though your mana expenditure seems excessive for simple storage."
As Asia helps Kira back into their cruiser, you notice how the partially-transformed girl now walks with her head higher, no longer hunching to hide her appearance. When your eyes meet, she actually offers a small, hesitant smile – the first you've seen from her.
"Thank you," she says softly as you pass. "For... everything."
Back in your cruiser, you plot a northward route on your phone, marking several small jewelry stores along the way. The convoy pulls back onto the street, heading away from the city center toward the northern highway – and hopefully, toward safety.
Your next target is Elysian Gems, a boutique jewelry store nestled in a small strip mall. Before approaching, you activate your Life Detection spell, the familiar drain of mana accompanied by an expanding awareness of living beings in the vicinity.
"Two signatures inside," you report, the magical feedback clear in your mind. "Both moving normally - not zombies."
"Could be survivors," Lyra suggests, her silver hair catching the afternoon sunlight.
"Or looters," Rin counters, fingering the pouch of gems at her waist. "Either way, we should proceed carefully."
You pull into the parking lot of a diner across the street, giving you a clear view of the jewelry store. Through your binocurs, you spot movement inside - two men in tactical gear, methodically emptying dispy cases into duffel bags.
"Military?" Kira asks, her voice stronger than before. Asia's healing sessions have continued to reverse her transformation, her previously clouded eye now showing distinct flecks of green.
"No insignias," you note. "Probably opportunists using the chaos to get rich."
You mark the location on your map with a red X and move on, adding pawn shops, hardware stores, and survival outlets to your pnned route. As you drive through the commercial district, you notice an unsettling pattern - certain buildings have been deliberately damaged in specific ways.
"Look there," you point out a pawn shop with spray-painted markings across its fa?ade. "And there." A hunting supply store with simir tags.
"Someone's marking these pces," Rin observes. "Systematically."
"CDC?" Asia suggests, her gentle voice tight with worry.
"Or military," Lyra adds. "Cataloguing resources."
You continue northward, adding strategic detours to your digital map. When you pass Northridge RV and Trailer Sales, you slow down, eyeing the selection of vehicles still on the lot.
"A mobile home would give us shelter and transportation in one," you suggest. "And those cargo trailers could expand our storage capacity significantly."
"We could attach them to the cruisers," Rin nods approvingly. "Efficient thinking."
Kira points to a highway sign. "Pinehaven Lodge, three miles. Big hotel, outside of town."
You pull over to check your map, finding the luxury resort nestled against the foothills. "Perfect. Limited access points, likely backup generators, and proper beds for everyone."
"I haven't slept on an actual bed since arriving in this world," Lyra sighs wistfully. "The prospect is... enticing."
Rin leans over your shoulder, her scent a mixture of ozone and cherry blossoms. "If we park the vehicles at the main entrances, we create natural choke points. Any dormant infected inside would be contained."
"And I can use Life Detection to clear each floor systematically," you add.
Asia csps her hands together. "I could continue healing Kira properly if we had somewhere safe to rest."
Kira's eyes find yours in the rearview mirror. The transformation reversal is even more evident now - nearly half her face has regained natural coloring. "Worth... the risk," she says slowly.
You adjust your route on the map, pnning a careful path that bances resource gathering with safety. The convoy pulls back onto the road, heading north toward Pinehaven Lodge with renewed purpose.
"We'll set watches through the night," you say over the walkie-talkie to the other vehicles. "And if this works out, we might have found our first real sanctuary since this nightmare began."
As you drive, Lyra fiddles with the radio, catching fragments of emergency broadcasts between bursts of static. One clear message breaks through: "—repeat, CDC Protocol Lazarus has entered Phase Two. All survivors with immunity markers are to be—" before dissolving back into white noise.
The Northridge RV and Trailer Sales lot stands eerily quiet as your convoy pulls into its sprawling parking area. Dozens of gleaming motorhomes, trailers, and camper vans sit in neat rows, most untouched by looters who prioritized food and weapons over luxury vehicles.
"Perfect," you say, surveying the selection. "An RV gives us mobility and shelter in one package."
Rin steps from her cruiser, her crimson eyes narrowing as she scans the perimeter. "I sense no immediate threats," she says, one hand resting on the hilt of her decorative sword. "But we should remain vigint."
You activate Life Detection, the familiar drain of mana accompanied by that expanding awareness. "No living signatures within fifty meters," you confirm. "Let's find what we need quickly."
The sales office is unlocked, keys hanging neatly on beled hooks behind the reception desk. After a brief consultation, you select a mid-sized Forest River Georgetown motorhome—rge enough for comfort but not so unwieldy as to hamper mobility.
"This model has sor panels," Lyra observes, running her slender fingers along the vehicle's exterior. "And considerable storage capacity."
Kira and Asia emerge from their cruiser, the nun's healing sessions having continued to restore Kira's humanity. The transformation reversal is remarkable—her formerly gray skin now shows only patches of discoloration, and her clouded eye has almost completely cleared.
"We should... take this one," Kira suggests, her speech pattern improving with each passing hour. She points to a vehicle trailer hitched to the back of the RV. "Can pull... a cruiser."
"Good thinking," you agree. "That gives us options. Someone can rest in the RV while we drive, and we're not locked into staying at hotels."
As Rin helps you check the vehicle's systems, you share your concerns about the CDC. "They must have had pns in pce before this outbreak even started. The systematic building markings, the organized collection teams—this isn't improvised."
"In my world," Rin says quietly, "government agencies often have contingency pns for scenarios that seem impusible to the public."
"They're hunting people like Kira and Howard," you continue, checking the RV's fuel gauge—three-quarters full. "Once they've secured enough resources and established their collection protocols, they'll likely become more aggressive."
"You suggest... attacking them?" Asia asks, her gentle voice tinged with concern.
"Not yet," you reply, starting the RV's engine. It rumbles to life smoothly. "We ck direct combat potential. For now, we gather supplies, keep moving north, and stay under their radar."
With the keys from the office, you quickly locate a suitable trailer hitch. Lyra proves surprisingly adept at mechanical tasks, helping you secure the vehicle trailer to the RV.
"In my dimension," she expins, tightening a bolt with practiced ease, "mechanical aptitude is considered an extension of spatial magic."
Once the setup is complete, you back one of the cruisers onto the trailer, securing it firmly. The RV's interior is a revetion—clean beds, a functioning kitchen, bathroom facilities, and ample storage space.
"This changes everything," you say, stowing your crowbar in a cabinet. "We can travel farther, rest properly, and carry more supplies."
Rin unfolds a paper map across the dining table, her finger tracing potential routes. "If we continue north while making strategic stops at jewelry stores and pawn shops, we can gather resources while maintaining distance from CDC operations."
"We should be careful," Asia adds, helping Kira settle onto one of the RV's comfortable benches. "The pces you mentioned—they might be watched."
"Or trapped," Kira adds, her voice stronger than you've ever heard it.
You nod grimly. "The CDC is becoming our biggest threat. But for now, we focus on survival. Let's get this convoy moving."
With your new vehicle configuration—the second cruiser taking the lead, the RV pulling one cruiser on a trailer, and the third cruiser following behind—you pull out of the lot, heading toward the first pawn shop marked on your map. The comfortable weight of the RV feels like security in a world that offers precious little of it.
