You focus your attention on Howard, whose bandaged arm still shows signs of the bite wound. Channeling your mana, you activate your Vigor spell, directing the healing energy toward him.
"Hold still," you instruct as a soft blue glow emanates from your palms and envelops Howard's arm.
"That feels... strange," Howard remarks, watching with wide eyes as the glow seeps into his bandages. "Like pins and needles, but pleasant somehow."
The spell costs you 15 mana initially, but the results are immediate. When Howard unwraps the bandage, the bite wound has closed significantly, the angry red infmmation receding to a healthier pink.
"I'll be damned," Howard whispers, flexing his arm experimentally. "It barely hurts anymore."
Kira watches the process with her mismatched eyes, her good one widening slightly. "Help... others too?"
"That's the pn, assuming they're not trying to ensve or kill us." you reply, turning your attention to Howard's suggested evacuation routes. "So where are we thinking?"
Howard spreads his map on a crate. "Three options. First, there's Pinecrest Lake Resort, about twenty miles north. Remote, defensible, likely abandoned this time of year. Second, Ridgeview High School - solid building, fences, could be used as a community shelter. Third, there's my uncle's farm outside town - well water, sor panels, and a root celr."
"Firearms should be a priority," you note. "We've seen how quickly things escate."
"Police station would be the obvious choice," Howard agrees, "but also the most dangerous. Sporting goods stores might have been looted already."
Lyra examines her staff with concern. "In my world, this focuses my magic. Here, it seems to amplify it unpredictably."
"You might want to practice smaller spells while we're driving," you suggest, then turn to Kira. "What do you think about these locations?"
Kira studies the map intently before pointing to the resort. "Water. Trees. Space."
"The ke does provide a natural barrier," Howard admits. "And there's only one main road in."
You begin organizing supplies, demonstrating your inventory system to the others by making canned goods disappear into your magical storage space.
"We should limit what we carry physically," you expin. "If we need to run, being encumbered could be fatal."
"Fascinating," Lyra murmurs, watching you work. "A pocket dimension storage system. In my academy, only graduate students master such techniques."
As you finish loading the remaining supplies into Howard's truck and your Subaru, a distant howl echoes across the warehouse district. It sounds almost like a wolf, but with an unnatural, guttural undertone that makes everyone freeze.
"What the hell was that?" Howard whispers, gripping his crowbar tighter.
"Not human," Kira states ftly, her body tensing like a predator.
"Not entirely zombie either," Lyra adds, her violet eyes scanning the surroundings. "The magical fluctuations are affecting more than just humans."
"Time to go," you decide, closing your car door. "Howard, lead the way to Pinecrest. We'll follow."
As your small convoy pulls away from the warehouse, you catch sight of something in your rearview mirror - a dark shape moving with unnatural speed across the rooftops. Whatever new horror the apocalypse has spawned, you're not eager to meet it unprepared.
You press the walkie-talkie button as your convoy moves along the winding road toward Pinecrest. "Howard, I think we should make a detour. We need firearms—maybe hit the police station in Millridge? It's on our way."
Static crackles before Howard's voice comes through. "That's a major risk. Every survivor with half a brain would've raided those pces first."
"Worth checking," you insist. "We could also look for abandoned police cars on the way. Maybe military checkpoints too."
The road ahead curves past abandoned vehicles and occasional shambling figures. You slow your Subaru as you approach a police cruiser parked haphazardly on the shoulder, its driver's door hanging open.
"I'm stopping for this one," you announce over the walkie-talkie, pulling over.
As you exit your vehicle, you notice Howard's truck continuing forward rather than stopping. You tap your walkie-talkie. "Howard? Did you copy?"
"This isn't a good idea, Brad," his voice crackles back. "We're too exposed here."
You approach the cruiser cautiously, checking inside for weapons. The interior has been thoroughly ransacked—no firearms, no ammunition. Even the first aid kit is gone. You curse under your breath.
Suddenly, a bright fsh of purple light erupts from the treeline across the road. The air seems to tear open, crackling with electric-blue energy that sends your magical senses into overdrive.
From the tear steps a young woman with striking crimson hair tied into twin tails. She wears an eborate bck and red outfit that resembles a school uniform with modifications—thigh-high stockings, a pleated skirt, and a bzer adorned with strange emblems. In her right hand, she clutches what appears to be a decorative sword in a cquered scabbard.
"What the—" she gasps, staggering slightly as the portal snaps closed behind her. Her ruby eyes widen as she takes in her surroundings, then lock onto you with startling intensity.
"You!" she excims, pointing her sheathed sword at you. "You have magic!"
Before you can respond, a gurgling moan comes from the trees behind her. Three zombies emerge, drawn by the light and sound of her arrival. The woman whirls around, her hand moving to draw her sword.
"Repulsive creatures," she snarls, unsheathing the bde in one fluid motion. The metal gleams impossibly bright in the morning sun.
Howard's truck screeches to a halt up ahead, and you can see him turning around through the rearview mirror. Your walkie-talkie crackles urgently.
"Brad! Get back in your car! There's more coming from the woods!"
Indeed, the commotion has drawn at least a dozen more zombies from the forest on both sides of the road. You're suddenly caught between the approaching horde and this mysterious new arrival.
"I am Rin Tohsaka," the red-haired woman announces with remarkable composure given the circumstances. "I don't know how I got here, but I recognize the stench of death magic." She backs toward you, her sword at the ready. "You have mana. I can sense it. Do you know what's happening?"
Lyra leans out of your Subaru's passenger window. "Another dimensional traveler!" she calls. "Get in the car, both of you!"
Rin gnces between you and the approaching zombies, making a quick decision. "I'll help you fight these things, but then you're expining everything." She assumes a fighting stance that speaks of professional training.
The zombies close in from all sides, and Howard's truck is still too far away to reach quickly. You need to decide fast—your ill-conceived detour has pced everyone in danger.
You dive back into the driver's seat of your idling Subaru, shouting to Rin, "Get in or be left behind!"
Rin hesitates for only a fraction of a second before sheathing her sword and leaping into the backseat. You sm your foot on the accelerator, tires squealing as you narrowly miss a zombie's grasping fingers by inches.
"What in the seven hells are those things?" Rin demands, her crimson twin-tails whipping around as she looks back at the diminishing horde.
"The local welcoming committee," Lyra replies dryly from the passenger seat. "Welcome to the apocalypse."
You catch up to Howard's truck and press your walkie-talkie. "Howard, I need you to listen. These one-off stops are too dangerous. We need a systematic approach."
"I'm all ears," Howard's voice crackles back, tension evident in his tone.
You outline your strategy – using vehicle horns to attract zombies from buildings, running them over from the safety of vehicles, then creating a defensive perimeter for looting. "It's better to clear them systematically than get surprised."
Howard's silence sts several seconds before he responds. "That... actually makes sense. But that stripped police car worries me. Someone else might be thinking the same way."
"Exactly," you agree. "If the station's been cleared, we should see zombie corpses around it. If not, the gun vault might still be intact."
In the rearview mirror, you watch Rin studying Lyra with undisguised curiosity. "Another dimensional traveler," she remarks. "I'm Rin Tohsaka, third-generation mage."
"Lyra Stormweaver, Arcanum Academy," Lyra responds, turning in her seat. "How did you cross over?"
"I was experimenting with the Second Magic when something... pulled me." Rin's ruby eyes narrow. "This world feels wrong. The mana here is chaotic, untamed."
You clear your throat. "I'm Brad. And yes, I know who you are. The Fate series exists as fiction in this world."
Rin's eyes widen with shock. "You're joking."
"Nope. Grail Wars, Servants, the whole package. There's a lot of details in there, that I'm not sure i want to go into."
"Fascinating implications for the multi-verse theory," she mutters, then fixes you with an intense stare. "You have magic too. Untrained but... interesting."
A few miles down the road, you spot a military Humvee parked at a makeshift checkpoint. No movement visible. You slow down and signal Howard to continue past while you investigate.
"Cover me," you tell the women as you quickly exit, crowbar in hand.
The checkpoint is deserted except for two dead soldiers – properly dead, not zombies – with bullet wounds to their heads. Inside the Humvee, you find a first-aid kit, two canteens of water, and a pistol with two magazines.
Back in the car, you mentally focus on your inventory system, testing its capabilities. The first-aid kit and water vanish into your magical storage with minimal mana drain. When you try to repair a damaged canteen, you discover it costs 5 mana. Refilling empty containers costs 1 mana per liter.
Twenty minutes ter, you arrive at Millridge Police Station. The parking lot is suspiciously empty of both vehicles and corpses.
"Someone's been here," Howard notes over the walkie-talkie.
You implement your pn, circling the building while honking. A dozen zombies emerge from the surrounding buildings, but strangely, none from the station itself.
After systematically running them down, you park the vehicles in a defensive formation and approach the station entrance with Howard, Kira, and your two dimensional visitors.
Inside, the lobby shows signs of organized evacuation rather than chaos – desks cleared, documents removed. Most surprisingly, the door to the weapons locker stands open and empty.
"Military," Kira says, sniffing the air. "Government."
"How can you tell?" Howard asks.
She points to boot prints in dried blood. "Standard issue."
As you explore further, you discover three police cruisers in the rear garage – intact and seemingly functional.
"We should take these," you suggest. "More reliable than civilian vehicles."
Later, in the station parking lot, you offer to teach Kira and Rin to drive.
"I've observed humans driving for centuries," Rin states confidently, sliding into the driver's seat of your Subaru. As you guide her through the basics from the passenger seat, she masters the controls with unnatural speed.
"You're a quick study," you comment as she executes a perfect three-point turn.
She fshes you a smile that's equal parts pride and something more... deliberate. "I excel at everything I attempt, Brad. Everything." Her emphasis sends a clear message as her hand briefly brushes yours on the gearshift.
Kira's driving lesson proves more challenging but oddly intimate. She sits rigidly at first, but as you guide her hands on the wheel, she gradually rexes.
"Good... teacher," she murmurs, her mismatched eyes flicking to yours. When the car stalls, she huffs in frustration, but when you reach over to help restart it, she leans slightly into your touch. "Like... your hands," she adds quietly, the admission clearly difficult for her.
You linger a moment longer beside Kira in the driver's seat, your hand gently pat her head. Her mismatched eyes widen slightly at the gesture, and you notice her damaged skin seems less gray than before.
"Better?" you ask softly.
Kira nods once, leaning almost imperceptibly into your touch. "Yes... thank you."
Later, as your group conducts a room-by-room search of the police station, you voice your growing concerns.
"Something doesn't add up," you tell the others as you rifle through an empty desk drawer. "This pce was cleared out methodically right before everything went to hell. And Pinecrest... it's isoted, defensible—exactly what anyone with resources would target first."
"Government types," Howard agrees, examining a bulletin board with missing evacuation notices. "Military or CDC probably."
"We should approach cautiously," you continue. "Check at different vantage points before committing. If we see vehicles or—worse—a field of corpses all facing one direction, we bail."
"Prudent," Rin comments, her twin-tails swaying as she examines an evidence locker. "Though if they've already turned, we could simply eliminate them and cim the location."
You focus your appraisal ability on Rin, curious about this new dimensional visitor:
[RIN TOHSAKA][Origin: Extradimensional (Fate Universe)][Magical System: Jewel Magecraft (partially compatible)][Abilities: Limited mana transfer, basic elemental manipution, enhanced physical attributes][Trustworthiness: Medium-High][Notable Skills: Tactical analysis, magical theory, hand-to-hand combat][Special Note: Strong resonance with your magical system]
As you transfer supplies between vehicles, you nudge Howard with a grin. "Now that your arm's healed up, at least you won't get shot on sight as an infected."
Howard's ugh doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, lucky me."
You notice with growing unease that Howard is loading the truck with supplies that seem carefully calcuted—just enough for one person's extended survival. When he chooses to stick with the truck rather than switch to one of the police cruisers, your suspicion deepens.
"It's just... I know how to fix it if something goes wrong," he expins, not meeting your eyes.
In the basement gun range, you test-fire the pistol you recovered from the Humvee. The weapon feels steady in your hands, your shots nding center-mass on the paper target. Unlike your panicked attempt to shoot the soldier earlier, each pull of the trigger feels controlled, deliberate.
"Your stance is wrong," Rin observes, stepping closer. Her hands adjust your posture, her body pressing briefly against your back. "Like this. Your previous failure was likely due to adrenaline, not weakness."
As you practice, a crackling sound from the police radio draws everyone's attention.
"—repeat, all CDC personnel report to Sector Seven. Protocol Lazarus is in effect. Any survivors with immunity markers should be detained for processing at Pinecrest facility. Use of force authorized—"
The transmission dissolves into static.
"Well, that settles it," you mutter. "Pinecrest is definitely off our list."
As you gather near the vehicles outside, preparing to depart, a blinding fsh of golden light erupts from beside the station's entrance. The air seems to fold in on itself, revealing a young blonde woman in a nun's habit who stumbles forward, looking disoriented and terrified.
"D-dove sono?" she gasps, wide green eyes taking in her surroundings before nding on your group. Her gaze fixes on you specifically, recognition flickering across her features despite your certainty you've never met. "You... you have magic too?"
"Another one?" Howard excims, raising his crowbar defensively.
The young nun raises her hands in a pcating gesture. "Please, I mean no harm! My name is Asia Argento. I don't know how I got here, but—" She stops as a zombie emerges from around the corner of the building, attracted by the fsh of her arrival.
She screams, backing away. Instinctively, you move to protect her, but before you can act, Asia's hands begin to glow with a soft green light unlike any magic you've seen before.
"What is that?" Lyra whispers, eyes wide with fascination.
"Healing magic," Rin answers immediately, recognition in her voice. "But different from this world's version."
With three dimensional travelers now in your group and the CDC apparently hunting people with your particur traits, the stakes have just gotten considerably higher.
