Chapter 23 – They are a bunch of quacks!!! Double Slots?!

The next early morning, Primanus woke up to see something he didn't expect to see.

In his garden, he saw his schorly daughter... actually practicing the Legionary Breathing Technique!

"My sweet daughter, why are you practicing Warrior Breathing Techniques again? Didn't you say it was a waste of time and a hassle to get cleaned up?" Primanus couldn't help but excim.

Antia, disturbed by his words, momentarily stopped, her body soaked with sweat, and her clothes sticking to her body, highlighting her mature curves.

She then turned to him and gave Primanus the most unexpected, yet somehow believable answer.

"My fiancé told me that increasing the Warrior Realm improves studying speed, so I decided to train again to improve my speed of learning magic." She said with glowing eyes.

Primanus knew those eyes. It was her eyes when she was interested in something. No matter what she did, when those eyes shone like this, she excelled.

"I see, carry on." Primanus woodenly said and walked away.

Going to his office and sitting at his desk, Primanus facepalmed.

"I should have thought about it earlier... If she continued training, she wouldn't be any worse than Apollox. What a waste..." He muttered.

Inwardly sighing, Primanus couldn't help but think about his equally talented son-in-w and mutter.

"Really... a match made by the gods."

After my early morning practice, I went to the fortress hospital to continue my medical education.

Initially, I only obtained the Field Medic css and Steady Hands ability. In all honesty, they didn't do much. At most, they just let me handle first aid... not that I underestimate it, but it wasn't some magical skill. Every centurion was expected to be a field medic, even if a poor one, but Centurions were no doctors.

In reality, Doctors were only considered a skilled profession in the army... And the entire Empire, for that matter. They were comparable to artisans, such as carpenters and bcksmiths. That was also why, when I requested this from my father-in-w, he was so shocked. It was like someone on the golden road of promotion suddenly asking to get demoted.

However, after knowing the catastrophic effects of a pgue, I obviously put the importance of medical studies WAY AHEAD of bcksmithing or carpentry. It was almost to the point of zealousness. After all, can you make a beautiful chair or mighty sword if you are DEAD?! Maybe in the underworld, but certainly not among the living!

And so, when I met the head doctor, who I actually technically outranked, with the request to learn medicine, he was certainly shocked!

"You really want to learn advanced medical skills? With all due respect, isn't this beneath you?" The middle-aged head doctor asked me, as if seeing a weirdo.

If I could transte his expression into words, it would probably be something along the lines of: "Are you pulling my leg?"

"Yes, I am serious. So please, teach me everything from the ground up. The Camp Prefect only gave me three months, so please teach me everything that you can, including theory and practical skills." I replied with a solemn look.

The Head Doctor sighed before nodding.

"Okay... I will teach you everything within my abilities. Your reputation as a genius precedes you, but even for you, three months is short." The Head Doctor said.

"I will try my best to meet expectations," I replied.

"My multipliers have gone up since the st time, so learning the profession should be easier." I thought.

"Very well. Since the Camp Prefect ordered it, you will be my assistant for the next three months." The Head Doctor sighed and said.

And so, I started learning under the Head Doctor.

  .

  .

  .

  That evening-

  I looked at my gains.

First of all, I obtained a new css. It was called Medical Student. Additionally, I gained Anatomical Knowledge. This is because I needed to first learn about the human body, which was a distinct ability compared to being a mere field medic who just needed to patch injured soldiers or sew wounds.

However, the entries on them were surprising.

  Medical Student:

A beginning practitioner of the medical arts, using hard science and research on the body to heal and cure. As mere students, they only possess theoretical knowledge.

  Hint: Unsung hero aspirants.

"An unsung hero, hah? Doctors are really underrated." I thought.

  Anatomical Knowledge:

To study the body is to learn how to fix it, so know it well.

  Bonus to Medical Csses

Hint: The body is a treasure trove, so unlock its secrets... with whatever means necessary.

"Okay, that hint is just ominous." I thought, feeling a chill down my spine.

Regardless of how spooked-out I felt, I still decided to go half-and-half on medical studies and Magic. While medical studies were important, increasing Magic Realm also increases my multipliers!

In fact, the simution has already reached the 3rd Magic Realm, specifically, lvl 100. This is also because I focused on Tempered Magic Circuits and medical skills. Anyway, this is the change that was brought-

  Realm Multiplier: 64 -> 67

The good news was that the Magic Realm indeed increased the multiplier. However, the bad news was that it was additively, not multiplicatively.

In other words, if I doubled-practiced both Warrior and Magic paths, and they were at the same realm, the multiplier would double at most.

"Oh, well. I guess it is fair." I thought.

If it stacked multiplicatively, then there would definitely be more magicians. People weren't stupid.

And then, I looked at the age, which was already 84. Unknowingly, the lifespan of the simution has reached 87, over 30 years more than what I initially lived as a borer. Not only do I live better, but I also live longer.

"The world is so unfair to the weak..." I muttered to myself.

I then decisively ended the simuted life, which granted me non-immediate experiences that would transte to faster learning.

First came the feedback from my magical studies and practice. Many points that I didn't understand became easy for me to comprehend, as if I had done them before.

However, what was far more surprising was the feedback from the Medical Student css and the Anatomical Knowledge ability.

It actually conflicted with what I learned from the military doctor!

"Wait, hah? What's going on? Why do I suddenly feel that the Humoral Theory is wrong? The Miasma Theory... is also wrong. Wait, the anatomy is also wrong. Did they base it on animals? Those remedies are just bogus... And those superstitions... WRONG! What the hell?!"

The Humoral Theory was a dominant medical concept that the body fluids were composed of four types: Blood, Phlegm, Yellow Bile, and Bck Bile. In Humorism, human health and temperament were governed by bance, and diseases were caused by imbance, which could be cured through bloodletting or one's diet. However, I suddenly felt that this was not only fake but also harmful.

The Miasma Theory was also prevalent. It stated that the source of diseases was the so-called Bad Air from noxious fumes and decaying matter. Such sources were swamps, sewers, corpses, and rotting pnts. While I felt that it held some practical truth, it was wrong. I don't know where, but I know it.

Proof? Do I need proof to feel that it was wrong? The GOD-FUCKING-GIVEN system is proof!

And then came the masterpiece, the Anatomy. What kind of stupid quack thought that the human anatomy was identical to pigs, apes, and oxen?! Are they fucking stupid?! Oh, right, there are taboos about dissecting human corpses. Okay, never mind, religion is blocking progress. Fucking yay.

And don't even get me started on some of those so-called remedies. Some of them might just kill you. At least, that was what I felt. Luckily, in most cases, they didn't use them. Those remedies are for the severely sick. With these kinds of remedies, I wouldn't be surprised if those people were listed as succumbing to the disease.

"So many things are wrong. I feel sick just from thinking about it. How do those quacks face themselves in the mirror while believing this nonsense? Oh, never mind, they don't know they are wrong. I was also almost conned into believing it." I muttered.

Anyway, with this type of knowledge, it is little wonder why so many people get sick.

However, they at least knew some correct concepts, such as quarantine and isotion, sanitation, hygiene, using honey and vinegar on wounds, and other such practices.

"So, I at least intuitively know what is wrong and what is right. I think just this makes me a better doctor than the vast majority of these quacks." I muttered.

Hence, from this day, I decided to only listen to what the doctor had to say, but I would judge things myself. Everything that felt off would be discarded.

Once I learned all the half-assed bullshit he has to teach, I will have to use the power of Prestige to try forcefully learning how to be a doctor.

  As for Anatomical Knowledge...

"I hope animals would help raise it a bit. Otherwise, I would need to dissect humans... and that is taboo."

  But on a second thought-

"Even if it is taboo, to MY patron god, it isn't."

Naturally, it was the disguised god who gave me the system. Honestly, I doubted that he came from the Roman Pantheon. At least, I never heard of a god giving someone a system. But since I saw at least one god, I didn't doubt that other gods exist, so I remained respectful. However, that didn't mean I needed to listen to the drivel that superstitious priests tell. Perhaps more than half of what they say is pure nonsense.

"Ah... I am thinking such sinful thoughts..." I shook my head, casting the thoughts away.

"Anyway, I should start training my magic. I want to see what happens when I reach the 1st Magic Realm."

With that thought, I meditated, following the instincts that Prestige brought me.

Around an hour ter, I felt my head grow hotter. At the same time, I felt a minor increase in crity.

  Opening my eyes, I blinked.

"Hah... success," I muttered. I then checked the simution.

Although it already ran for an hour, it didn't focus on magic or Warrior Practice yet, so the increase was visible.

  Magician Realm: 0 -> 1

  Realm Multiplier: 32 -> 33

Current Time Progression Speed: 32 Simuted Years/ 1 Real-Life Day.

This was the real-world situation. That is to say, increasing the Magician Realm barely helped me in real life. Unfortunately, the time progression didn't change.

But that didn't matter. What mattered was THIS!

Csses: Medical Student: lvl 2(120)(In Progress), Novice Magician lvl 0(In Progress)[Click to Expand]

Abilities: Concentration lvl 392(1,200)(In Progress), Meditation lvl 354(1,200)(In Progress)[Click to Expand]

From one css and one ability, it was now two csses and two abilities!

"System, is this what I think it is?" I could barely hold back my excitement.

  Replying to the Host.

The number of active Css and Ability slots is equal to 2^(Magician Realm).

These slots both enjoy full progression speed.

On the same concept, the number of simuted years per day equals 2^(Warrior Realm).

In other words, the higher the Host's realm becomes, the more efficient and faster the simutions become!

Seeing this, I couldn't help but clench my fists in excitement.

"That means I can improve even faster, and the prestige will inevitably increase even more since I can improve multiple abilities at once."

Feeling refreshed, finally, I went to sleep.

In the city of New Rome-

"Squea! Squea!" A pig cried as it was being dissected alive.

A Greek physician in his early 30s was dissecting a live pig in the middle of the street of the elite, much to their shock, horror, disgust, and a rge serving of fascination.

"Noble men and dies of New Rome! Through this experiment, I shall prove to you that the brain controls vocalization, and not the heart!" The Greek physician loudly said to the crowd without fear.

And then, taking a sharp knife, he made a small cut at the pig's neck, specifically targeting the recurrent ryngeal nerve.

Suddenly, the pig stopped squealing, yet was still breathing. This caused the crowd to excim.

  "Ooh..."

  "Fascinating..."

"He just made a small cut, and the pig went quiet."

The Greek physician smiled in satisfaction at their reaction.

"See?! This is proof that the brain controls voice, and not the heart!" The Greek physician said to the crowd, his hands stained with pig blood.

The physician's assistant walked over, giving the physician a napkin, which he used to wipe his bloodstained hands. And then, he addressed the crowd.

"Good nobles, remember my name! I am Garen, the great Greek Physician! And I dub all those so-called doctors who said the voice comes from the heart as quacks! They are all a bunch of quacks!!!"1The name of this guy is Galen, and he indeed did this horrible public experiment and became a famous imperial physician. He didn't manage to cure the Antonine pgue, though...

Garen's eyes shone with unbridled ambition.

"I will continue giving more and more demonstrations of my abilities. If my abilities are properly noticed, then one day, I will become an Imperial Physician! I will have vast wealth, standing, and reputation... and they will write my name down in history as the great Garen! And I shall step on all of those stupid quacks who dare call themselves my rivals if I have to!"
