28. Easy One

There were no windows, no cracks in the walls, no other way in or out of the room other than the one we just entered from. One that was now slammed shut.

  This was it.

No one was coming to save us.

It was either we killed the giant snake or died trying.

A giant snake that was now looking towards us. I could practically feel the anger wafting off its body.

  “Run!!”

I barely had time to scream that out before the snake lurched at us.

Its giant body that was wider at the top, moved faster than it looked like it should be able to as it rushed at us.

My family and I dashed off to the right as fast as we could.

The snake didn’t let that stop it though.

As if it was ignoring laws of physics, it turned sharply at our sudden movement like all of its previous momentum was nothing but a joke.

“Shit how the hell can it just turn like that!!”

  “No time for talking, run!!”

I was barely paying attention to what my uncles were talking about as I furiously tried to come up with a solution in my mind regarding the snake, when I heard a familiar swoosh noise and an arrow came flying past me and straight into the maw of the snake.

It was almost like the snake ran into an immovable wall the way it hitched backwards from the pain it felt from the arrow.

A thought that must’ve been creeping around in the darker parts of my mind began to surface as I witnessed the snake writhing in pain from one singular arrow that managed to enter it’s mouth.

It’s outer skin was hard enough to deflect arrows, but it’s insides…it’s insides were weak and squishy…

If one arrow could cause it to be that in pain, then what about a sword? Or a spear? What would that do…

  HISSSSSSS!!!

Of course this blasted snake wouldn’t be kind enough to give me the time I needed to formulate a plan.

“GET BACK TO RUNNING!! Aunty keep shooting arrows in its mouth whenever you get a chance! I have a plan!”

All the members of my family let out respective curses as the giant snake whose eyes were practically a burning red now, hissed loudly and began chasing us once more.

  …There was only one problem.

The bastard had closed its mouth.

Just our luck that it would only take one little mistake to learn its lesson.

There goes the plan I barely had…what now Freddy! Think dammit!

Shit there’s no way we were going to outrun it at this rate. Especially not grouped up like this.

“Everyone run off in different directions! I’m the fastest it won’t be able to catch me!”

It seemed like they were about to argue my point, but I cut them off.

“We don’t have time to argue! Just trust me!”

They relented eventually and broke off to the left and right as I slowed down just a bit to ensure the snake would stay on me.

  And of course it did.

Alright, mission accomplished and now I’m the only one running like a headless chicken with its ass on fire.

  Now what…

I scanned the massive room again, trying to see if I missed something earlier. Something I can use to flip the situation.

  Anything.

That’s when I noticed something…my family members. I didn’t really have time to look behind to see exactly what they were doing, but I could see their shadows on the floor, and it looked like they were running.

“We’re gonna figure something out Freddy don’t worry!”

That was Uncle Terrance…they were probably chasing after the snake as it hissed and chased after me.

  Surging Step!

I dashed forward as the giant beast finally neared closed enough that the vibrations caused by its movement could be fully felt through my feet.

Anyway…it wasn’t the fact my family was running after the snake that caught my attention.

It was the shadows…and the reason I could see shadows in the first place. Fire.

And then the dots began to connect in my brain…

“AUNT RENEE!! Shoot at the braziers!!! We need to light the bastard on fire!!”

  “Got it!”

She yelled back and I could immediately hear the sounds of arrows flying through the air, and it wasn’t until the third one got released that I finally heard a loud noise.

  Dong!

The noise echoed around in the room for a few moments before Aunt Renee seemed to lock in and then a series of dongs could be heard as she hit all the braziers hanging above.

It didn’t take much longer after that before oil and fire began pooling up on the floor, and very quickly fire began to spread.

  Oh shit.

The snake let out a screeching hiss as the fire reached it far quicker than it reached me just due to the size of its body, and instead of focusing on chasing me, it was back to the happy sight of it writhing in pain.

I stopped running and turned around to watch it even as the flames began to pick up around me.

The heat was gathering, but for some reason it didn’t quite feel as hot as I thought it would.

“What now Freddy?! We don’t want to cook in here!”

Guess that wasn’t the same for them, but I tuned them out…I needed to focus.

The snake had its mouth open as it squirmed and screeched in pain as the fire took hold of it in earnest.

Not wanting to waste anymore time, I steeled my determination before quickly making my way over using two consecutive Surging Steps.

Then instead of going for a meaningless stab, I quite literally used everything I had in me to slap it’s writing body with my spear as hard as I could.

Of course, that didn’t do anything to damage it on any real level, but now it was mad.

Like even more mad than it already was.

It was a good thing I dashed away immediately as it lashed out at the spot I was just at, then it spotted me a short distance away and roared out at me.

I had now become an even bigger problem in its eyes than the flames that still plagued its body.

Which was quickly proven true as it rushed after me with all the intention in the world to eat me alive.

  This time…I stood my ground.

  Not yet…

  “Freddy move dammit!”

“The hell you doing, Freddy move!!”

  “Freddy!”

  Not yet…

The snake continued to rush towards me like a run away train dead set on destroying whatever had the unfortunate fate of being in front of it.

  Not yet…

Just as the snake had finally reached me it opened up its maw as wide as it could like it was trying to clamp down on the world itself.

  Surging Step!

With my spear gripped tightly in my hands, I activated Surging Step and dashed directly into its gaping hole of a mouth and rammed my spear directly upwards to hopefully where it’s brain was located.

The spear was immediately logged into its upper jaw and it then a clamped down even harder like it was trying to snap the spear in half, but instead of being successful in that endeavor, the spear went straight through it’s jaw and right up into whatever came after that.

And judging by the fact it had now stopped moving, I think it’s safe to bet on the fact I punctured it’s brain.

  “Shit…”
