Chapter 9 – The Dangers Of Health Drinks

  Juia_Darkcrest

He is hurt and lonely she thought, wondering how she could help this man she just met.

Nanael wasn't sure what she should be doing. She wasn't quite finished cleaning the room when John-Sama* showed up. She was still fairly new to the guild as a receptionist, only retiring early from adventuring six months ago when her party disbanded. She was happy with the job but it came with many unique situations. Like this one.

She looked around the room and walked over to his armour. She had never seen shiny, sky blue wyvern scales before and wondered where he acquired it. The mp light flickered, causing reflections to dance across the mail. It was nearly the same colour as her hair, not a mark or blemish on it.

  Has it even been used?

She looked over to his sword. The scabbard was silver with blue highlights to match the armour, but she didn't recognize the style of sword it was, long and narrow with only a very small circur guard for the wielders hands. The hilt was wrapped in blue leather with a diamond pattern to it, exposing the silvery metal beneath. She recognized it as mithril, which wasn't that uncommon material, but it was fairly difficult and expensive to find a craftsman capable of working with it. It also appeared brand new.

Her eyes narrowed for a moment, her past experience both as an adventurer and a receptionist forming a hypothesis . Who was this man they just hired? Was he an exiled noble from a different country? Or maybe a spy for one of The Republic of St. Shirule's enemies?

She shook her head. No, a spy would know better then to use brand new equipment. That would bring too much attention to themselves. A exiled noble fit the most in her mind, even though he treated beast folk with respect, even making friends with them. Nobles didn't do that anywhere that she was aware of. She decided she would share her thoughts with Galba ter.

She went back to cleaning, allowing John to rest. She would finish up as best she could, then wake him up so they could attend his welcoming party. She grimaced for a moment, knowing that Gulgar would feed that disgusting liquid to him in this guilds bizarre initiation ritual. She passed out when the drink first touched her lips, and she couldn't get the taste out for a few days. Bleah!

John id there snoring peacefully, not knowing what was in store for him in the near future.

"Welcome to the Guild!" the small crowd of people yelled, mugs held high as John, Nanael, and Brod walked into the dining hall. Their were smiles on everyone's faces and many cpped. Outside of the receptionist he saw earlier and the two brothers, there were a handful of people he didn't know also in guild uniforms and a few adventuring parties primarily consisting of beast folk. Bazan, Basura, and Serikos were also there, ughing and hanging off of each other, obviously already drunk.

Are they not departing tomorrow to hunt that dinosaur? John thought while waving at everyone. He was guessing they wouldn't be having as early of a departure as they had originally pnned.

"Attention everyone, by now I am sure you all already know, but this man here is John. He will be joining us in our newly reinstated position of Training Hall Recovery Specialist. That's right! We have a healer again! So pass on to everyone that he isn't to be harassed, as he isn't like those other greedy, racist healers in town." Brod shouted, his voice cracked through the din like a whip, quieting everyone down. He gave off this authoritative aura that was oppressing, not to mention he was even a bit taller then John was. It was a bit intimidating.

The cpping continued as John made his way through the room, introducing himself to everyone, the guild staff first then over to the adventurers. They all seemed to be in a great mood, and if John wasn't still exhausted from the day's exertions, he would have enjoyed himself as well. He tried to keep a smile on his face so as not to bring down the mood.

"Hey John, do you like girls." Bazan said, draping his arm over his shoulder and pulling him into a huddle with his two buddies.

"What kind of dumb question is that, you know I do."

"Well, we are thinking of taking a quick jaunt over to the pleasure district in a bit. Do you want to join us?" he asked in a conspiring tone, which would have worked if he wasn't half cut and nearly yelling into John's ear. Others looked over at the group, looking to see how he would answer.

He was backed up enough at this point he had no issues with the thought of paying for services. It was not something he had entertained in his previous life, but for whatever reason since he arrived at DEN, he was getting hornier by the day. He almost said yes, but once again reality reared its ugly face and with the weight the drunken wolfman leaning on him, caused his back to spasm and give out. John dropped to the floor in pain, and then was kicked in the leg by Bazan as the man stumbled forward. With the loss of his support, the drunk wolfman tripped over him, then face pnted onto the floor beside him.

"FUCK ME! HEAL!" John shouted through closed eyes and gritted teeth, the green glow coming through his hands to his back, thankfully reducing the pain to something reasonable again. He opened his eyes to a massive hand in front of him.

"Here" Gulgar said, helping him up to his feet. "You okay?"

Most eyes were on him in the room, confusion and concern pin on their faces. John didn't like the attention, but with this rge of an audience, he figured he might as well tell them his made up story of 'old injuries' so he didn't need to keep repeating it. He didn't like to lie, but his life in DEN was going to be a lie in every world he went to. He wanted to keep the same story everywhere, so he didn't confuse himself when he went to different worlds. It was a major concern of his.

"Thanks, it's just an old injury that refuses to heal. Don't worry about it." he said while leaning on Gulgar, but loud enough that most people in the room probably heard him. He then turned to Bazan and cast another heal along with a cure, hopefully sobering the man up a bit. The man shook and then nodded at him, clearly embarrassed at what happened.

"I need to sit down." he said quieter to his new crutch. Tonight was suppose to be a celebration, and he didn't want to ruin the party for everyone else.

Gulgar brought him over to the bar, and helped him on to one of the chairs there. He thanked him and shifted himself so he could see most of the room. They were all still somewhat muted, the group not sure of what was happening.

"Everyone, thank you for the welcome! As you can see, I am a bit fragile, but I will do my best to take care of you, so please do your best to take care of me! Now lets drink!" He said in a loud voice. He tried to keep the pain out of it but he wasn't sure if he managed to or not. He quietly cast another heal on his back.

Someone sat a beer next to him, and the party continued. People would come over to talk, but luckily no one else leaned on his poor shoulders again. Food was served by Gulgar, and John had to admit, that the cartoonish looking meat straight out of the Flintstones was very delicious. After about an hour, he was about to excuse himself as he was done and needed to y down, when Gulgar smmed a mug of the most foul smelling concoction that had ever existed in front of him.

"Here drink up!" the gigantic wolfman said, a shit eating grin on his face. Chants of drink it, drink it, drink it rose from the other tables.

"The hell is this?" He asked. It was a bck and purple liquid that slowly shifted colours as it moved around the gss. It reeked of...he didn't know what but it immediately turned his stomach. He wanted to vomit just from the smell.

"It is a godawful but healthy beverage invented by the Sage of Time. When you drink it, it makes it easier to increase your muscles, stamina, and reaction times. It st for six hours and is said to have many other benefits as well." Gulgar said. "Everyone here has tried it at least once!"

John looked back into the mug. He knew health freaks back on Earth would drink the weirdest, most disgusting crap imaginable sometimes for the 'Health' benefits. Maybe in this world of magic, there would be some actual benefits to drinking things like that.

He stared at the mug. It almost looked like it was staring back at him. He shuddered. The 'drink it' chants continued.

Awww fuck it, what is the worst that could happen? I puke it back up? I already fell down today in front of everyone, what's a little puke.

He tipped the mug back and drained it. Yep, it was fucking disgusting. He never wanted to go and gargle mouthwash so much in his life. He smmed the mug down and looked up at the wolfman who gave him this toxic concoction and smiled at him. Gulgar had a surprised expression on his face. People started cheering around him.

"You actually drank all of it?"

"Oh yeah, was frigging delicious. BLAH! Why would you give anyone-" John started to say then he felt it. His muscles rexed and his fatigue disappeared. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest.

Is this some sort of energy drink? I feel like I just drank four red bulls and had a couple Percocet's. Oh my poor heart.

John stood up and moved around. He wasn't in pain anymore. He tried stretching and found that he had slightly increased mobility before his muscles tightened up again. He wasn't going to risk jumping around, but if this concoction could take the pain away, it was worth drinking.

Is it going to kill me in the process though? Is this what cocaine feels like? God, my mouth feels like I just licked a toilet bowl at a train station.

John felt like returning to DEN and ask Alec a few questions. He didn't know if he would get any answers though.

"Are you okay John?" Brod came up and asked. The man shoved a mug of beer into his hand, which he took gratefully, rinsing his mouth with the beverage. He felt like he was on a cloud nine right now. Was he drunk too? He only had two gsses since he arrived, along with some food. He had more with the boys in the slums when he was healing and didn't feel like this.

"Yeah. I haven't felt this good in ages. The pain is gone." He said, sharing his honest feelings.

"Your injury was that bad? And they couldn't do anything about it?"

"Yeah. My right shoulder will pop out of joint randomly, my back will give out when the muscles get even a little tired or have pressure put on them the wrong way. I can only manage a brisk walk for a minute or two before I need to stop. Oh and I forget things really easily, mainly when I am a bit tired, and I get tired quickly. I need several naps...wait what am I saying."

It took a moment for his brain to catch up, but he was over sharing. He never went into details about his health, even when back on Earth. Ever. Even with his children. It wasn't anyone's business but his own.

Morphine! This reminds me of the time I was on Morphine when I broke my arm many years ago! I just babbled everything that came into my head. Maybe this drink isn't a good idea. I need to go.

"Hey Brod, I think I need to go y down. Something is not right here."

"Sure. Hey Nanael, can you take John to his room please. He isn't feeling well." He said, calling the cute bunny girl over. He whispered something in her ear, and she nodded and came over to John.

"Come on John-Sama, lets go." She said taking his hand. It was really soft and smooth. And small. It fit nicely into his hand. He wondered what it would look like wrapped around his dick.

  Uhhh...Brain...just stop.

Nanael led him out of the room. He gave a smile and a few half hearted waves to everyone he passed on his way out.

Gulgar stood next to Brod as the two men watched their new healer depart hand in hand with the new receptionist.

"You know Brod, I think there was something about not mixing Substance X with alcohol in the instructions. Something about increased side effects."

"Yeah. I forgot as well. I think I can see why. I told Nanael to watch over him for a bit to make sure he is okay."

"Yeah. Wouldn't that be embarrassing to finally get a healer who helps people for a fair price and end up killing the poor guy at his welcome party."

"Tragic is more like it. Come, the night is still young, I feel the need for some cards." Brod said and pulled Gulgar to a table. He would check in on John in a bit, but he was sure he would be fine.

  * Kind of a spoiler for the future of who I think Nanael is as person

SpoilerIn the anime, she called him Lord Luciel for some reason, in the Manga, it was Luciel-Sama. I have no idea why she was offering that kind of respect to him from the beginning but I am going with a submissive nature despite being an ex-adventure. This is probably due to both natural and environmental conditioning because of how the Rabbitman race was treated by frigging everyone. Think pyboy Mansion on a global scale except they were not being paid.
