Chapter 8: I’m just being thorough

You prop Lieutenant Jessica Hartman against the side of the Ford Expedition, her eyes darting between you and the women of your strange new family. The zip ties bite into her wrists as she shifts uncomfortably on the gravel.

"So," you begin casually, pacing before her with exaggerated thoughtfulness, "how far down the moral hole do I want to go?"

Hartman's eyes narrow, professional training keeping her expression neutral despite her precarious position.

"Part of my sanity hopes you girls would prevent me from keeping a sex sve," you continue, watching her face pale slightly at your words, "but the rest of my brain is pointing out the positives. Is an armed murderer pying army girl without a real government an interesting sve? It's better than murdering her, right?"

"I am a legitimate government operative functioning under emergency protocols," Hartman insists, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

Kira snorts derisively. "Government? What government?"

You crouch before Hartman, studying her like a curious specimen. "Where am I supposed to report you for human hunting? Which court is in session to try you for experimentation? Which oversight committee reviews your actions?"

Hartman's jaw tightens. "The CDC has authorization—"

"From whom?" you interrupt. "Last I checked, Washington was overrun. So were most state capitals."

When she remains stubbornly silent, you sigh dramatically and press your palm against her forehead. "Enchant: Curse of Compelled Truth."

Mana flows from your fingertips, golden threads weaving around Hartman's head before sinking into her skin. Her eyes widen in panic as the magic takes hold, mouth working against her will.

"There is no functional federal government!" she blurts, horror spreading across her face. "Regional CDC directors have assumed emergency powers under Continuity of Operations protocols!"

"That's better," you smile, the spell humming between you. "Now tell me about dimensional anomalies."

While she speaks, Lyra and Rin methodically search the Ford Expedition, removing equipment and documents with efficient precision.

"Dimensional anomalies began appearing three days after initial outbreak," Hartman continues mechanically, fighting your spell with each word. "Energy signatures inconsistent with known physical ws. Four categories identified: Type-A anomalies are temporary rifts, Type-B are stable passages, Type-C are sentient transferences—"

"People like me," Lyra interjects, holding up what appears to be a sophisticated handheld scanner.

"—and Type-D are artifact manifestations," Hartman finishes, sweat beading on her forehead from the strain of resistance.

"How are you tracking them?" you press.

"Satellite grid triangution for rge-scale detection. Field teams use modified EMF detectors calibrated to specific frequency ranges." Her eyes dart to the scanner in Lyra's hand. "That unit can detect anomalies within two hundred meters."

Rin emerges from the vehicle, holding up a tablet. "Medical profiles. Detailed analyses of 'immunity carriers' categorized by percentage and type."

"And how many collection facilities are there?" you ask Hartman.

She struggles visibly before answering. "Four primary research centers. Pinecrest is the smallest. The main facility is The Bunker, converted from an old missile silo outside of—"

A series of aggressive honks from Asia at the RV's wheel interrupts the interrogation. Through the trees, you glimpse movement on the highway – a military convoy heading your way.

"Time's up," you announce, standing abruptly. "Pack everything useful."

Hartman looks up desperately. "You can't just leave me here!"

"Watch us," Kira replies coldly, grabbing the st of the scientific equipment.

As your group hurries to the vehicles, Rin pauses beside you. "The tracker from the vehicle," she whispers. "It's receiving encrypted communications. With time, I could—"

"Later," you reply, casting one final gnce at Hartman struggling against her bonds. "We need distance now."

The engines roar to life as the distant convoy grows closer, your expanded caravan pulling away with its newly acquired treasures – and the secrets they might reveal.

You guide the convoy several miles north, eventually turning off onto a forest access road that provides both concealment and a quick escape route. The vehicles form a protective semi-circle, engines pointed outward for rapid departure if needed.

"Let's see what treasures our CDC friends left us," you announce, spreading the equipment across the hood of the Ford Expedition.

Rin approaches the satellite communication device with professional interest, her crimson eyes narrowing as she examines its interface. "Military-grade encryption, but the hardware is surprisingly... familiar."

You raise an eyebrow. "Familiar how?"

"Simir magical signatures to communication devices in my world," she expins, fingers dancing across its surface. "Almost as if the technology evolved along parallel lines."

Lyra peers over Rin's shoulder, her silver hair brushing against the other woman's cheek. "The dimensional barriers must be thinner than I thought."

As they work on the communication device, you extract the tracking module from your magical inventory space, careful not to activate it. The sleek bck box pulses with faint blue light along its seams.

"They're hunting humans," you say grimly, examining the tablet's files. "Categorizing people like specimens. 'Dimensional anomalies,' 'immunity carriers'..."

Kira joins you, her now mostly-human features hardening as she scans the documents. "Those bastards murdered people at the pharmacy. Called it 'specimen collection.'" She spits on the ground. "And they call themselves the government."

Asia sits quietly at the edge of the group, her blonde hair catching the afternoon sunlight as she studies the medical profiles with growing horror. "These... these are detailed dissection notes," she whispers, her gentle face pale. "Brain tissue samples, spinal fluid extractions... while subjects were still alive."

"If they're left unchecked," you continue, "they'll become the de facto authority in the region. Armed, organized, and ruthless. They'll take whatever – and whoever – they want."

Lyra looks up from the scanner she's been examining. "This device has sophisticated filtering algorithms. It's not just detecting dimensional energy – it's cssifying it." She frowns. "Brad, when's your birthday?"

The question catches you off guard. "March 18th. Why?"

"And you say the outbreak started six days ago," she muses, tapping something into the device. "That's... interesting."

  "What is?" you press.

"Just a theory," she says, sharing a meaningful gnce with Rin. "As for avoiding detection, I might be able to create a magical countermeasure, but I'd need materials – specific gemstones, ideally."

Rin nods. "I could assist. My jewel magecraft could amplify the effect."

"There's something else," you say, examining the satellite device's dispy. "Something called 'Convergence Event Delta' scheduled for approximately 46 hours from now. Any ideas?"

Kira shudders. "Nothing good, I bet."

"It sounds like they're attempting to manipute dimensional energy," Lyra says quietly. "Without proper understanding, they could tear open the barriers between worlds."

"Or worse," Rin adds, her voice unnervingly calm. "Create a stable gateway for something to come through."

Asia looks up, her green eyes wide. "We should stop them."

"We'll need supplies first, allies would be ideal, but we've surprisingly not seen any other mobile survivors, much less combat capable" you respond, formuting a pn. "That bulk store we passed a few miles back might have what we need – clothes, medication, maybe even generators."

Rin nods approvingly. "Strategic. We should prioritize mobility and communication."

As the discussion winds down, you approach Rin with a request. "Could I borrow some rings for magical experimentation? Nothing valuable, just items I can practice with."

She studies you for a moment, then reaches into her pocket, producing a small velvet pouch. "These are low-quality, but they'll conduct magical energy adequately." Her fingers brush against yours as she passes them over, lingering a moment longer than necessary. "Use them wisely. I'm curious to see what you'll create."

You feel the weight of the rings in your palm, possibilities blooming in your mind as you prepare for whatever comes next.

The convoy pulls into the parking lot of Big Bob's Bulk Emporium, a massive warehouse-style store sitting oddly untouched at the edge of a small retail complex. While driving, you examine Rin's pouch of rings, turning each one over in your fingers. Your Appraise skill hums to life, magical information filtering into your consciousness.

[Ring (silver/gold)][10–25 mana capacity (x2 partial attunement)][Simple item, mana circuits partially attuned]

"Interesting," you murmur. "These aren't just metal and stone. They're conduits, already partially attuned."

Rin gnces over from the passenger seat, a small smile pying at her lips. "Perhaps they are. Does that change your pns?"

"It expands them," you reply, excitement building as possibilities unfold in your mind.

You park the vehicles in a defensive formation behind the loading bays, out of sight from the main road. After activating Life Detection, you sense no human presences inside—only three shambling undead near the front entrance.

"Three zombies by the main doors," you inform the group. "We'll enter through the loading bay. Rin, Kira, you take point. Lyra, watch our backs. Asia, stay close to me."

Kira nods, eyes gleaming with anticipation as she checks her shotgun. "Been waiting to try this beauty in action."

Inside, the cavernous warehouse stretches before you, shelves towering to the ceiling. Most of the ground-level merchandise has been picked clean, but the upper shelves—accessible only by forklift—remain untouched, a treasure trove of supplies beyond the reach of casual looters.

"I'll handle the forklift," you say, spotting the yellow machine parked near the loading area. "You four focus on clothes, jewelry, anything useful at ground level."

Rin's eyes light up at the mention of jewelry. "Gems will amplify our magical defenses. I'll focus there."

The forklift roars to life under your touch. You navigate to the back section where heavy equipment is stored, discovering a veritable gold mine of generators on the upper shelves—eight pallets of Sungoldpower 20kW Off-Grid Kits, two Champion 15kW units, and three Westinghouse WGen12kW models. Your pulse quickens at the find.

"Jackpot," you whisper, carefully maneuvering the first pallet down.

Nearby, you spot pallets of industrial floodlights—sixty boxes of 500-watt units, enough to light a small compound. You load these onto the trailer as well, along with storage bins and pstic totes that you ferry over to the women.

The girls' excited voices echo through the cavernous space as they discover untapped sections of clothing inventory.

"Brad!" Lyra calls, her silver hair bouncing as she holds up a midnight-blue nightgown against her slender frame. "Look what we found!"

Kira emerges from a changing room wearing form-fitting bck tactical pants and a compression top that accentuates her now almost fully human figure. "Better for fighting," she says with a smirk that suggests she knows exactly how good she looks.

Rin examines a crimson silk robe with gold embroidery, fingers tracing the patterns thoughtfully. "Suitable," she murmurs, adding it to her growing collection.

Asia stands wide-eyed before shelves of lingerie, her cheeks flushed pink. "I've... never worn anything like this," she admits, fingering a delicate white ce bralette.

"Take whatever you want, as much as you can," you tell them. "We don't know when we'll find something like this again."

They need no further encouragement, filling tote after tote with clothing—practical combat wear, comfortable everyday options, and more intimate apparel that makes your mouth go dry when you glimpse it being packed away.

When the trailers and RV are loaded to capacity, you gather everyone in the mobile home's living area, the engine idling softly.

"About Convergence Event Delta," you begin, your voice serious. "I don't think we can stop it—not with just the five of us. That would be suicide."

Asia's brow furrows. "But if they're opening doorways between worlds..."

"We need to be strategic," you counter. "And there's something else you should all understand." You turn to Rin and Asia specifically. "You two are famous—literally fictional characters in this world. If we encounter other survivors who recognize you..."

Rin's eyes widen with genuine shock—a rare break in her composed demeanor. "Famous? As in... known entities?"

You confirm. "High School DxD. Fate/Stay Night. Very popur anime and visual novels and the two of you are very famous heroines. We've been moving too quick for us to go through this slowly, sorry." your apology unheard.

Asia looks stricken. "But that's impossible! I'm... I'm just me."

"It expins the looks we've been getting," Kira mutters. "Not just because you're pretty."

Lyra taps her chin thoughtfully. "This confirms my theory about dimensional resonance. Your worlds exist here as fiction because creative minds unconsciously channel multiversal impressions."

"It also means you'd be, rather are big targets," you continue. "Any, group we encounter might try to kidnap you—either for your famous abilities or because of what you represent, or just because you're famous and pretty."

"So what's next?" Kira asks, leaning forward. "You mentioned a home improvement store?"

"Yes," you nod. "We need supplies to install these generators and do a bunch of setup while rearranging these generators, I have no doubt the electrical tools and equipment will be raided, but the materials and the tools we've already got should be enough for what we need. But first—" you turn to Lyra, "—is there a way to measure magical energy in the atmosphere? To understand what we're dealing with?"

Rin and Lyra exchange gnces, both considering the question from their different magical traditions.

"What's your pn at the home improvement store?" Rin asks, clearly intrigued by your strategic thinking.

You smile, fingers knocking on the RV's table as you prompt the convoy to prepare to move once again. “I’ll expin when we’re parked behind the home improvement store, we’ll be there a few hours, rearranging all our cargo and generators.”

The convoy pulls into the parking lot of BetterBuilt Home & Supply three quarters of an hour ter, backing the vehicles close together near the loading dock for easy cargo transfer. You activate Life Detection, scanning through the cavernous store interior.

"Two signatures near the garden section," you announce. "Slow movement patterns. Definitely infected."

Rin nods, drawing her pistol. "I'll handle it."

"I'll join you," Kira adds, hefting her shotgun with newfound confidence.

While they clear the threats, you lead Asia and Lyra through a quick inventory reconnaissance. The store has been picked over but still contains valuable supplies—electrical components, tools, building materials tucked away in forgotten corners.

"Perfect," you murmur, grabbing spools of heavy-gauge wire and junction boxes.

When Rin and Kira return, hands spattered with dark ichor, you begin expining your pn while arranging the generators and sorting materials.

"Alright, my idea..." you start, connecting cables between components. "Background first—we're six days into economic shutdown. The only logical way the power grid is still operational is if the military secured the sources first, pressing workers into emergency service."

Lyra passes you tools as needed, her violet eyes tracking your movements with intense fascination. "A common approach across dimensions during crises," she confirms. "Resource consolidation always precedes social colpse."

"Exactly," you continue, stripping wires with practiced efficiency. "With forced bor, we might have days or weeks before city electricity fails completely. Then the bckouts start—random at first, then systematic cutbacks from periphery to core areas."

Rin examines the CDC's satellite communication device, her crimson eyes narrowed in concentration. "The military frequency bands suggest limited coordination. Three separate command structures competing for resources."

"When the bckouts hit, these generators become worth more than human lives," you expin, patting one of the Champion 15kW and WGen12kW units. "But gasoline has a two-month shelf life at best. After that..."

"The sor panels," Asia concludes softly, helping you unwrap the tarped equipment. "They'll st for years."

"Precisely." You grin, pulling out Rin's pouch of rings momentarily. "But here's where enchantment comes in. I think I can use mana to refuel engines, convert electricity into magical energy and back again—creating a sustainable loop."

Kira's eyebrows rise. "That sounds too good to be true."

"It might be," you admit, "The conversion ratio is the key. If I'm right and one kilowatt equals one mana point..."

Lyra gasps, understanding immediately. "A perpetual system! Brad, that's—that's revolutionary."

Rin approaches, expression calcuting as she examines your work. "Your intuitive approach is... unorthodox, but the underlying theory seems sound." Her fingers brush yours as she traces one of the wires. "Let me assist. My jewel magecraft could stabilize the transfer connections."

As she leans close, her scent—something like ozone and cherry blossoms—fills your senses. The proximity sends an unexpected jolt through your magical system.

Asia kneels beside you, her delicate hands surprising you as she confidently arranges wiring. "In my world, sacred energy follows simir principles to what you're describing," she expins, her green eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "If I channel healing energy through these connections..."

Kira watches from a few feet away, arms crossed but expression curious. "So this means we'll have power indefinitely?"

"If it works," you caution. "I haven't had the mana to test it properly."

"Then let's remedy that," Lyra suggests, pcing her hands on your shoulders from behind. "I can channel dimensional energy into your system. It might accelerate your regeneration temporarily."

As her fingers press into your muscles, you feel a cool, tingling sensation wash through you—your mana pool suddenly expanding beyond its usual limits.

"Ready when you are," she whispers, her breath warm against your ear.

You slow your movements deliberately as you work on the wiring connections, fumbling slightly with a connection that should be simple. Within moments, Rin's crimson eyes narrow with suspicion while Lyra tilts her head, a knowing smile pying across her lips. Only Asia continues watching with innocent fascination, completely missing your pyful deception.

"You're stalling," Rin observes, her voice dropping to a silky purr as she leans closer, her breath warm against your neck. "Interesting tactic."

Lyra slides her hands from your shoulders down your arms, fingertips tracing patterns that send jolts of dimensional energy into your system. "Perhaps he enjoys our attention," she whispers, her silver hair falling like a curtain around your face as she peers over your shoulder.

"I'm just being thorough," you protest weakly, but your grin betrays you.

"Thoroughness is admirable," Rin murmurs, deliberately pressing against you as she reaches for a connecting wire, her body's warmth radiating through her clothes. "But deception deserves... consequences."

You feel your mana regeneration accelerating with their proximity—magical energy flowing into your system at nearly triple the normal rate. The sensation is intoxicating, like drinking pure power.

Asia looks up from her wiring work, cheeks flushing as she notices the intimate tableau you three have formed. "Am I... doing this wrong?" she asks hesitantly.

"Not at all," you assure her, reluctantly breaking away from the flirtatious moment. "You're actually quite skilled with electrical work." you say, doubting healing energy did anything and wondering if her holy affinities had any effect.

With the preliminary connections in pce, you guide everyone into the RV, acutely aware of how the confined space brings your bodies closer together. You check your magical status, confirming your mana has indeed been partially restored through their magical proximity.

[SYSTEM CREATOR STATUS][MANA: 37/120][STATS: STR 8, CON 12, DEX 10, INT 15, WILL 14, WIS 13, CHA 9, LUCK 7, FATE ???] [SPELLS: Life Detection (50m range, 5 mana/minute), Barrier Field (10m radius, 40 mana initial), Enchantment Framework (Target, effect, mana initial, upkeep/duration)] [PASSIVE ABILITIES: Potent Health (Active), Magical Perception (Dormant), System Expansion (Active)][INVENTORY: 8/20 slots filled][SKILLS: Appraise Lvl 1][AVAILABLE CREATION POINTS: 1]

"Now for the real challenge," you announce, pcing your hand on the currently off rge TV screen. "Enchant: Connection."

Mana flows from your fingertips, golden threads expanding outward like a spider's web, linking the RV's core systems—mobility components, living quarters, environmental controls—before stretching further to encompass the vehicle trailer, cruisers, ftbed trailers, generators, and finally the expedition.

Kira watches from the doorway, eyes widening as the magical network becomes briefly visible—a pulsing golden ttice connecting your entire convoy. "Holy shit," she whispers.

"Enchant: Interface," you continue, directing the spell toward the RV's television screen, which flickers to life despite being unplugged. The dispy transforms, showing a stylized diagram of your connected vehicles and components.

Sweat beads on your forehead as you channel the st and most crucial enchantment. "Enchant: Energy Conversion."

For a moment, nothing happens. Then the RV's systems hum to life—lights illuminating, air conditioning starting—without the generator running. The interface dispy shows energy flowing between components, converting between electrical power and magical energy in equal rate.

  [Forest River Georgetown RV Interface][Mana Storage Capacity: 20/4150 = RV 1000, Cruiserx3 500(each), Trailerx3 250(each), Generatorx5 250(each), Expedition 650][Connection: RV Subsystems (expand 14), Vehicle trailer + cruiser 1, cruiser 2 + ftbed trailer, Cruiser 3 + ftbed trailer, Generators and expedition.][Energy Conversion: 1kW ? 1 mana/hr][Sor Generation: 10-20kW/day][Driving Generation: +5kW/day][Idle Upkeep: 3mana/day(expand)][Drive Upkeep: -][Linked Enchantments: Connection, Control Interface, Energy Conversion

"It worked," you breathe, colpsing back against the living room seat as euphoria washes over you.

"Brad, this is..." Lyra trails off, violet eyes wide with wonder as she examines the interface. "You've created a perpetual energy system powered by magic. Do you understand what this means?"

"It means we never run out of power," Kira says practically.

"It means far more than that," Rin corrects, her expression uncharacteristically impressed. "He's created something that shouldn't be possible according to the ws of thermodynamics."

You grin exhaustedly. "It’s not perpetual yet, but In the next month when the power grid fails and gasoline becomes worth more than gold, we'll still have lights, heat, and mobility. We just need to out st the CDC"

Asia touches the still glowing interface reverently. "It's beautiful."

"Let's test it properly," you say, grabbing a power cord. "I'll connect us to the building's power and see how much energy we can convert."

You dash outside, plugging the RV into an external outlet. When you return, the interface shows mana accumuting rapidly—the equivalent of 15 mana points per hour flowing into your system from the grid.

"Ladies," you announce triumphantly, "we just became energy independent in the apocalypse."

Lyra catches your arm as you pass, pulling you into a spontaneous hug. "Brilliant," she whispers against your ear.

Rin maintains her composure but allows herself a small smile. "Acceptable work," she concedes, which from her is high praise indeed.

Kira ughs, throwing her head back. "So we're basically apocalypse royalty now?"

"Something like that," you agree, watching the energy conversion numbers climb higher.
