A Note On FormatThis story is told primarily through the eyes of Minase Sora.
Every main chapter lives in her head, filtered through the particur way she sees the world, which is precise and observant and occasionally completely wrong about the things that matter most.
Scattered throughout are half chapters written from other perspectives, usually at moments when Sora cannot see what is pinly visible to everyone around her.
There are also side stories. They are not required reading. They exist purely because some moments deserve to be lingered in a little longer.
Character Details
Main Characters
Minase Sora
Role: Protagonist. Sole member of the Research Club. National colloquium champion four years running.
Year: Second year
Appearance
Sora has dark navy bck hair that sits somewhere between intentional and forgotten, long enough to tuck behind her ears but short enough that she never bothers. Her eyes are a deep grey blue that tends to make people feel like they are being measured, which they usually are. She is average height and has the particur posture of someone who spends a great deal of time hunched over a ptop and has never once thought about correcting it. Her uniform is always technically correct and consistently looks like she put it on while thinking about something else, which she did.
Personality
Sora is not cold. This is something people get wrong about her fairly often. She is precise and she is quiet and she does not perform warmth for the benefit of people she does not know well, but she is not cold. The people who know her understand the difference. There are not very many of them and she is fine with this.
She processes the world through observation and analysis. She notices everything. The exact angle of afternoon light through the club room window. The specific frequency of the server hum that means it is running optimally. The way Hana's shoulders drop approximately three inches the moment she walks through the club room door.
She has been noticing that st one for a long time. She is only recently beginning to record it.
She is extremely good at reaching correct conclusions about everything except herself, and even that is only a temporary condition.
Skills
Mathematical analysis, data modeling, programming, research methodology, making extremely accurate predictions about things she would rather not predict.
The Club Room
Sora's club room is small and south facing and gets good afternoon light. There is a whiteboard covered in equations that have been there so long they have started to feel structural. There is a server tower she built herself that hums at a frequency she finds soothing. There are three pnts in varying states of survival and one notebook that started as a research journal and has recently developed a second and deeply inconvenient section.
Retionship with Hana
Sora and Hana have been friends since they were small enough that the word friend did not feel like enough to contain it but neither of them had a better word yet. Hana is the single most constant variable in Sora's life, present and reliable in a way that Sora has simply always built her calcutions around without examining why.
She is beginning to examine why.
She is not enjoying the process.
Fujiwara Hana
Role: Student Council President. Childhood friend. Primary anomalous variable.
Year: Second year
Appearance
Hana has warm chestnut brown hair cut neatly to her jaw, the kind of haircut that looks effortless and is not. Her eyes are a soft brown that tends to make people feel immediately at ease, which serves her well in her role. She wears her uniform with the precise care of someone who understands that presentation is its own form of communication. There is always a student council armband on her left sleeve. She keeps it very clean.
She looks like someone who has everything handled. Usually she does. There is one specific exception and it has dark navy hair and forgets to eat lunch.
Personality
Hana is the kind of person a school runs on. She is organized and warm and decisive and people follow her not because she demands it but because she makes them feel like they are part of something worth following. She takes her responsibilities seriously without taking herself too seriously, which is a bance most people spend their whole lives trying to find.
She is also, underneath the composure that has served her extremely well for seventeen years, someone who feels things quite deeply and has simply learned to feel them quietly. She is good at this. She has been practicing since she was small.
There is one person in her life around whom the composure occasionally develops hairline cracks. She maintains them carefully. She patches them when she notices. She is noticing them more frequently tely and she is choosing not to investigate why.
Skills
Leadership, communication, organizational management, scheduling, budget review, finding procedural deys that are technically legitimate, knowing exactly how Sora takes her tea.
Retionship with Sora
Hana has been rearranging things around Sora for so long that she genuinely cannot identify when it started. It is simply how her life is structured. Sora needs someone to remember when she forgets to eat, which is often. Sora needs someone to make sure the club room does not get taken away, which requires some creative paperwork. Sora needs someone who will sit with her in comfortable silence for an hour without either of them needing to fill it.
Hana is good at all of these things.
She has recently started writing a document titled Things I Do Because I Want To. It is taking longer than she expected.
Supporting Characters
Mori Yuki
Role: Student Council Vice President. Observer. Keeper of tallies.
Year: Second year
Appearance
Yuki has straight dark hair pulled back in a low ponytail that she has worn the same way since the first day of high school. Her eyes are sharp and slightly narrow in the way that makes people feel watched, which they are. She is tall and tends toward stillness, the kind of person who occupies a room without demanding it notice her. Her uniform is impeccable. She has never had a visible reaction to anything that she did not choose to have.
Personality
Yuki is precise and economical in everything she does. She uses exactly as many words as a situation requires and not one more. She is extraordinarily good at her job because she understands that good support means making the person in front look capable, which Hana always is, but it helps to have someone watching the details.
She has been watching a specific set of details for considerably longer than is strictly required by her job description.
She is not uninvested. She is simply expressing her investment through documentation, which she finds more satisfying than intervention. The tallies are not a joke. They are a coping mechanism and they are working.
The Tally Notebook
Small. Dark green cover. Has been through two full volumes. A third is waiting.
Kagawa Ren
Role: Second year. Unofficial club room regur. Melon bread supplier.
Year: Second year
Appearance
Ren has short warm brown hair with a slight wave that does whatever it wants regardless of what she wants, and she has made peace with this. She has an open, expressive face that makes it basically impossible for her to conceal what she is thinking, which is something she is aware of and considers a feature rather than a fw. She is slightly below average height and moves through the world with the energy of someone who finds most things genuinely interesting.
Personality
Ren is warm and curious and perceptive in the particur way of someone who pays close attention to people because she finds them genuinely fascinating rather than because she is looking for advantage. She stumbled into the club room looking for math help and found something considerably more interesting.
She has a gift for asking the exact question that makes the person she is talking to go very still and quiet. She does not always do this on purpose. She does sometimes do this on purpose.
She likes Sora very much in the way you like someone who is operating on a completely different frequency but is somehow still perfectly readable if you know what to listen for. She considers herself fluent in Sora at this point.
Shiomi Kei
Role: Student Council Member. First year. Earnest. Late to the party but deeply committed.
Year: First year
Appearance
Shiomi has soft bck hair cut straight across her forehead in a fringe that she trims herself with varying degrees of success. She has rge attentive eyes that tend to give the impression that she is taking notes, which she often is. She is small and tends to stand very straight to compensate, which mostly works. Her student council armband is always slightly crooked and she has never noticed.
Personality
Shiomi approached student council with the seriousness of someone who genuinely believes in institutional governance and has not yet been worn down by the reality of it. She is earnest in a way that older students find either exhausting or deeply charming depending on the day.
She came to the council for the administrative experience. She did not come to the council to become emotionally involved in the personal lives of her senior members. She is now extremely emotionally involved in the personal lives of her senior members and she is not sure when this happened.
The School
Seiran High School
A mid sized private high school with a slightly above average academic reputation that becomes considerably above average when people remember that Minase Sora attends it. The building is old enough to have character and well maintained enough to not be a problem. The club rooms are on the third floor east wing and get excellent afternoon light. The student council room is on the second floor and has a window that looks out over the courtyard and, if you lean slightly to the left, toward the east wing.
Hana has never mentioned this.
The school culture is retively rexed for a private institution. Clubs are taken seriously. The student council has genuine authority over budget allocation, event approval, and club charter management, which is a fact that has been quietly extremely relevant to at least one ongoing situation for the better part of a year.
A Note On The Research ClubThe Research Club was founded six years ago by a third year student who wanted institutional recognition for independent academic work. At its peak it had seven members. Currently it has one.
The club charter requires a minimum of two members to maintain active status, a fact that the administration raised formally at the end of st year and has attempted to act on five times since with no success due to ongoing procedural review by the student council.
The club room contains: one server tower, self built and running three ongoing projects. One whiteboard covered in equations of varying ages. Three pnts named, in order of acquisition, Control, Variable, and Outlier. One small couch of uncertain origin that appeared one day and that nobody has questioned. One electric kettle. One notebook that began as a research journal and has recently developed a concerning secondary purpose. And now, on the windowsill shelf, one small box of chamomile tea that belongs to someone else.
The club has a budget of approximately nothing. It has never needed more.
