The Weight of Hunger

  The fissure was gone.

  The mirror, gone.

  But the silence was not.

Je drifted in the hollow space, where broken stars bled faint light into the void. His chest rose and fell, but the breath never seemed to reach his lungs. The weight pressing down was not gravity, nor chains — it was hunger itself, sharpened into something almost alive.

  The System stirred.

  — [Your path is chosen. The record has begun.]

Je’s hands trembled. He wanted to believe it was from rage, but he knew the truth. It was from fear — not of the System, not of failure… but of the hunger gnawing inside him. A hunger that wasn’t his, yet demanded to be fed through him.

From the abyss below, a low rumble echoed. It was not words, not sound, but intent. Something in the deep void had taken notice.

It watches. It waits. It will not be patient forever.

The space warped. The broken stars bent toward a single point, as though swallowed by an invisible mouth. Je staggered, clutching his chest. The hunger inside him roared — not in defiance, but in recognition.

A voice, colder than silence, threaded through his skull:

  — Devourer… or devoured.

Je’s teeth clenched. His fists curled. He wanted to scream, but the void swallowed the sound before it could leave his lips.

And then — the darkness fractured. A single shard of light broke through, jagged, trembling, but real. It landed before him, sharp enough to cut the void itself.

  A blade?

  A key?

  Or bait?

  The System pulsed again.

  — [Hidden Item Detected: ???]

  — [Warning: Objects from the Rift carry both origin and end.]

Je reached out, hand hovering just above the shard. His heart thundered. Every instinct screamed take it — yet the reflection of his chained self lingered in his memory.

If hunger was destiny, then perhaps this was the first bite.

The void trembled. The shard pulsed. And Je… chose.
