133. To Question Instinct

Very good salutations to you, my dear reader.

  Very good ones indeed.

Do say, how is your morning today?

  ... (Still cold.)

  Really?

  Hmmm...

  Pity.

All the same, do I say, does it bring a yet better opportunity for more, I should say.

  ... (Huh?)

  Why, haven't you heard?

The very troubles of life and how it is that they make a man or woman stronger?

... (Oh yeah. "Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger.")

  Why, indeed.

  ... (Sure...)

  Hmmm, doubtful, are you?

  ... (Nah. I agree. It's just a pain.)

  Oh, very good then.

Of the very same I suppose I'd best get started here.

'Twould be a shame and a pity should you be here for nothing, I should say.

All the same, do I say...

  Where were we?

... (Oh, yeah. I solved your question from yesterday. The Bone Beak is after the carcass, not Jake.)

  Oh, indeed.

You do have it most correct, my dear reader.

  Yes.

The very beast is fully after the dead grave-tail and fails to set its sights on the lad.

And even still, I do say, my dear reader...

  Do consider this...

Why would it, of all the many things in the forest, choose one such as this?

  ... (Because it's a scavenger...)

  Why, indeed.

  Surely...

Why, the very beast merely hoped that the young lad did simply have it in him to flee at the sight of another competitor for food...

As do many beasts in the wild.

Why, some may even say that the very dreadful appearance of the Bone beak is as such for that very purpose...

To intimidate a rival who also prefers a meal.

However, I shall have to cast my doubts upon such.

  All the same...

  ... (Huh?)

Why, have I not said it before?

  Truly, I say...

Fail to assume that I know everything.

... (But... but... you're the one telling the story.)

  Oh, bother...

  Moving along...

  Ah, yes...

The very beast, its nose towards the dead beast...

Fail to assume that it had not the slightest understanding of what was right besides the beast.

  Indeed.

  Take note, my dear reader...

The very beast of nothing but hearing and smell could very accurately tell that even the young lad himself had turned towards him...

  Indeed.

Why, it could even tell that it was he who slew the beast.

... (Is its sense of smell better than Jake's?)

  Hmmm...

I am honestly not quite sure...

All the same, do I get on with it.

  Ah, yes...

The very young lad, who, truly, I say...

Did in fact consider killing the beast as the very second to his collection.

  Yes.

A fine extra to the first he'd brought down, I would argue.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

  ... (But... isn't it bony.)

  Yes, but indeed.

The very beast is bony, and thereof, I say...

Does there remain all but too little meat for such a beast to feed to its slayer.

All the same, as the very saying goes, does such a thing fail to stop a man.

  Indeed.

Even so, as the young lad himself found himself to be oh-so too young to be a man.

All the same, was he ready at a moment to slash of the beast.

Why, all the facts were on the wall, I would say.

A simple cut would be all it would take.

... (Is the converser strong enough?)

A very good question, I say...

... (Well, you did say that its bones were tough, right?)

Why, indeed. That much I did elaborate on, I say.

All the same, is the very beast's bony hide soon to be tested.

As for the young lad, he simply waited, head turned to the beast lurking in the trees...

All the while, as the very beast waited to make its own move.

Why, the young lad could obviously simply climb up and charge the creature in the air...

However, 'twould be better to simply wait for the beast to find itself amongst them.

  Indeed.

And of that, did the very dragon start, oh-so cautiously...

  Walking step by step...

All the while, only those with ears as sharp as the young lad's taking note of the air leaving its bony beak.

  Indeed.

The very beast was breathing more and more, you see...

Not for the tensity of the situation, I say...

However, but for the very need to search the young lad out even more.

  Indeed.

For, to miss a single detail of battle, they often say...

'Tis often to lose the very same.

  Indeed.

All the same, did the very dragon slowly walk downwards...

  Crawling all the like...

Opening its mouth from time to time, snarling...

As the young lad's very own eyes only followed it.

Even so, had he yet to unstrap Converser from his back.

  Indeed.

  ... (Why?)

Have I not said it before?

The young lad is a most impeccable warrior.

All the same, is he one who at times, how you say...

Is simply too proud of his own power.

I shall leave it as that.

Even so, did the very beast soon after start to walk even faster...

Having searched out what was necessary.

  Indeed.

Not a single other predator in sight.

Not a friend lurking in the shadows...

  Yes...

'Twas much easier to come to the ground then and there...

Well, I suppose that should the beast have managed speech...

That those would manage to be its thoughts.

All the same, did it snarl merely once more...

Before walking down faster once more, and of that...

Did it finally come to the ground, and thereof, I say...

Did it snarl ever louder and even so, more menacingly.

  Indeed.

With its very wings spread out, the very sinews of flesh that were its wings beating in the wind...

The very snarl that it had as a sound from its very mouth...

That whispering and almost hissing snarl...

  Yes.

  Intimidation, I say.

The very reason to hope that the young lad would rather leave the meal and flee...

Than risk a fight with something oh-so ready for battle.

Even so, did the very beast stand up straight, all for the hopes of furthering the intimidation.

  Yes...

  A failed ploy, of course.

Why, the young lad simply plucked the Converser from its strappings and turned to the beast...

Walking towards it with every desire to end it.

  Yes.

  ... (Ouch.)

  Hmmm?

... (I mean... just imagine being the Bone Beak. All that planning, all that avoiding, all to set a trap... but instead... to fall into one.)

  Hmmm, yes...

Although, I would argue that the young lad is not one to set up traps.

Why, had the Bone Beak fled would the young lad have failed to follow.

... (Huh? Shouldn't he be able to catch it? Oh... wait... oh yeah... the carcass.)

  Precisely, my dear reader.

  Precisely.

All the same, did the young lad let go of the beast's carcass...

To fully face the lesser dragon...

With the very axe at his left.

  ... (He's holding back.)

Did I not say that the young lad was proud of his own power?

All the same, would I argue...

That the very young lad did indeed have himself ready to kill the beast...

Why, do fail to assume that the young lad is made of diamond, my dear reader.

All the same, did the very beast now and there face something of a troublesome conundrum, I say.

  For, indeed.

The young lad had failed to turn away and flee...

All the same, was the young lad now facing him...

And even so, did it fail to fit the beast's hunting methods to simply, how you say...

Fight the young lad now as he stood there.

  Indeed.

Even so, did the young lad not seem as though easy prey.

And even so, was the very meal seated on the forest floor before it.

  Indeed.

  A very great conundrum...

To risk harm and even death, or even so, to flee with a hungry stomach.

'Tis a query upon the minds of many a beast, I say.

... (They are gonna fight though, right?)

  Well...

If you would allow me to get there, indeed.

  The very pair shall fight.

And all the same, was the very Bone Beak most troubled.

Why, did it widen its wings more and even so, let out a more deafening screech...

All the same, but for the young lad to approach to get ever the closer.

A shameful sight, I should say.

Why, the very beast was now most perplexed I should tell you.

  Simply...

For the very reason that it now had this to contemplate...

  Should it flee?

Why, for the very reason to conserve energy, I say...

Perhaps it considered this, and thereof, perhaps it should have.

However, perhaps out of curiosity, perhaps out of hunger...

Perhaps of daring, perhaps of carelessness...

  Even so, perhaps of pride...

  Indeed.

  Do say, my dear reader...

How do you imagine that a Bone Beak does battle?

... (Lemme guess. With its beak?)

  Precisely, my dear reader.

All the same, had the beast yet to make this decision...

Why, its very desire to survive did battle with its own mind...

  Yes...

  The very desire...

A very desire present in all beasts...

The very same being so in man as well.

All the same, was it for hunger that the very beast was now there...

Why, 'tis most fascinating that it now remains for hunger that the very beast may now also need to turn back yet once more.

  Indeed.

  Do say, my dear reader...

  ... (Huh?)

What do you think of this most precarious situation?

  ... (About what?)

  Hmmm...

  Oh, never you mind.

All the same, the very beast was stuck in this position now, trying to decide its very next move.

Why, should it attack, would the young lad most certainly attack himself.

Should it flee, would the meal be lost, and even so, may the young lad give chase...

A most well known thing about beasts is how often such a thing may occur.

Even so, did it remain in its mind that it could also defend itself.

  Indeed.

Why, the very beast's own bony carapace made it far harder to deal with...

Than many a foolish foe may first surmise.

Why, it is of every beast to know what makes it feared amongst others...

  Every...

The Bastion for the sheer numbers it carries behind it, and even so, its breath of spewing flames...

All the same, the giant white owl, for the very fact that only the very most adept can hear it in the dead silence of the night...

Even so, the Thomas Cat for its absurd intellect.

Yes, the very beast held pride in its bony armour...

But even so, even this very beast knew that it could die.

Yet another thing fascinating to think of.

All the same, did the very beast simply watch with its nose and ears as the young lad walked towards it...

Why, it could even smell the very metal upon his...

  Hmmm...

  Time is up.

  ... (Oh, come on!)

  Now, now, my dear reader.

  Rules are rules.

And of those rules must we absolutely oblige, I say.

... (Ugh. Fine. But it better die in the next chapter.)

Oh, come now, my dear reader...

Where is all the very fun in simply doing things as they should.

Why, at times, something extraordinary need not come from sheer blunt strikes...

But rather, from one who knows how to use a bent sword.

  Indeed.

  ... (Huh?)

Do ponder upon that, my dear reader.

  Indeed.

All the same, do have a most proper day, my dear reader.

  A most proper day indeed.
