Already happened story > Runaway! 2: Black And White > 105. To Axe

105. To Axe

Of the very same tale, I do say, a good day to you, my dear reader...

  A jolly good day indeed.

  Even so, why...

I do suppose that it is the same as ever...

  No?

  Cold as well?

  Indeed.

As would be expected of your weather and your days at this time in the year.

  Very well...

As seen fit, I shall continue with the tale...

  Hmmm?

Well, you shall have to wait for that, I suppose...

  Moving along...

  Ah, yes...

  The very battle carriage...

  And thereof...

Fren: How do you do, madam?

This, of course, in the very man's odd characteristic of constant joyous aboundings...

  Indeed.

They both, boy and man looked into the stall...

  Eyes full of shiny weaponry...

I shan't bore you with the details...

Even so, did the very man's eyes find themselves upon those of the woman's...

  Who replied...

Victoria: Oh, quite well, my good sir.

  Truly...

There was a tad sense of dishonesty and lies in her tongue as she spoke...

  Hmmm?

We shall see about it later...

  Now, do consider...

She did curtsy, as the very many of the women of Vanamour do tend to...

  Even so, why...

Victoria: And you, my good sir?

This she only said after arising from her curtsy...

Fren: Oh, ho, ho, quite well, my dear.

The very man even smiled with his teeth...

All before presenting the lad to the woman...

  Yes...

  Indeed...

Fren: My boy here just so happens to be a valiant warrior. Do show him only the very best of your weaponry!

  Victoria: Surely...

She gave yet another curtsy before turning around to search her belongings...

All before finally coming upon what she had planned on all along, I would say...

  Indeed.

'Twas only a mere moment later that she arose from what would have appeared to be a massive chest...

  Yes...

One large enough to harbour many a sharp tool, be it axe or sword, by the manysome...

And yet, not nearly long enough to carry a spear or polearm of any sort...

That, my dear, she would happen to simply keep elsewhere...

  Moving along...

  Ah, yes...

As she did arise with the very weapon in her hand...

  Why, must I say...

Did the eyes of Fren Chavalier widen in a sort of glee as some would call it...

  Indeed.

  For...

The very blade that did arise was indeed an axe...

And thereof, was it one not merely impressive in its very size, but also...

For the many decorations that surrounded the very beast of a blade...

  Indeed...

  An axe made for...

  Hmmm...

Well, I suppose dwelling on this topic shan't kill either of us...

  Ahem...

  Dear reader, do consider...

Why would one make a blade oh-so massive as that it would far surpass its "brethren" in sheer mass and destructive potential?

  Hmmm?

  Oh, no, no, no...

  Dear reader...

Do think once more, I implore you.

  Do consider...

  Why would one do so?

And thereof, do not consider what it can do merely, but also, for what reason one made it?

  Hmmm?

  No, no...

  I shall give you time...

Do simply consider things for a moment while I wait...

  'Twould be best, I believe.

  **********

Well, have ye a proper answer?

  Hmmm?

Well, you aren't too far from the mark.

Really, you are oh-so close indeed.

  Yes.

Do combine your first answer with your second.

  Yes.

  And reconsider.

For what reason would one make a bigger than necessary axe?

  Hmmm?

  Indeed.

  You have gotten it.

Should a man fight a man, why...

  Such a massive weapon...

Even so, as one may lift it with little hurdle...

Does there remain the very pertinent risk of cutting oneself while using it...

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

  Yes...

  That does indeed occur...

Far more often than one would imagine.

  And of a smaller one...

  Yes...

  The same saying goes...

I do believe I have no need to explain this all to you...

  That much having been said...

Do you realise it now, my dear reader?

  Hmmm?

  Indeed...

The very axe before the lad is not one for killing people...

  Nay...

  'Tis one for slaying beasts...

  Indeed...

The very large axe did she with a heft and a hustle lift unto the front of her carriage...

All so the very young lad could inspect it with his own eyes...

All the while, struggling under her breath...

Why, a tedious game it was...

  Merely lifting it...

  Victoria: Here!

The words she only managed after finally dropping it on the carriage...

  Fren: My, my...

The very blade was an impressive looking one...

Not merely in size but also in decoration...

A very yellow and black paint about it...

To say nothing of the menacing disposition that seemed to ooze from it as though muddy water...

  Yes...

A most massive and terrifying blade would a human say...

  Victoria: This is...

She only managed this after finally going through the work of breathing in more air...

Do breathe more air in, dear reader...

  Moving along...

Victoria: ... a bladed axe, firmly brought up with frostwood...

  Frostwood...

I suppose an explanation is necessary...

  Yes...

The very wood from the plants and trees that grow in several regions around Vesturia...

That are ever and only ever covered in ice...

  Hmmm?

  Indeed, my dear reader, indeed...

A most strange place for many a man and a woman...

  Even so, for a tree...

However and even so, is it for that reason that the very wood from these trees finds itself ever so rare...

Why, one may soon say, that the very wood itself is more expensive than an equal measure in gold...

  Yes...

Well, I do suppose that there are many strange and somewhat expensive things that do not seem so...

All the same, I do ask of you, dear reader...

Is there such and such a thing in your world?

  Hmmm?

Well, I should have guessed so...

  Hmmm...

And even so, do I also ask of you...

What do you believe makes this wood so special...

  Considering from where it grows?

  Hmmm?

  Frost resistance, you say?

  Hmmm...

Yes, I do suppose you have it right there...

  Indeed...

The very wood is fully resilient to any form of ice...

Be it the cold in the winter...

Or even so, a magic attack from a wizard...

Or the very effect of a shinobi's mark...

That just so happens to be imbued with ice.

  Indeed.

That power shall do far less damage to one carrying the same...

However, that was not of what I wanted to converse about with you.

Why, I was simply going to say that as a result of this...

The very blade is quite resilient to wear and tear as a result of getting wet...

  Yes...

  Indeed...

  Hmmm?

Why, 'tis the very greatest problem with all those wielding wooden weapons, one would say...

  Why...

Day after day, week after week, ...

  Eventually...

The very thing starts to rot...

Making it even more breakable than it was prior...

As if that was not already an issue, I say...

  Indeed...

Wooden weapons are truly a man's gamble, one would say...

Even so, they do have their perks...

  Moving along...

  Hmmm?

  Perks?

  Another time, dear reader...

  Another time...

Why, some people do always say metal this, magic that...

Even so, I shall speak of this at a later time...

  Yes...

  Hmmm...

  Indeed...

And of the very blade of the axe...

  Why, of course...

  As many a blade...

Sharp where it needs to be, not sharp where it shouldn't...

  Obviously.

Even so, was it more striking for the sheer size of it...

  Yes...

The very blade finds itself to be larger, as one would even say...

Too large, for the already large axe...

  A most...

  Peculiar possession, one may say...

And of the very same, why...

The metal from which the blade came was called Galebornne...

  Yes...

Quite similar to the very name Galehornne as you may remember...

  Indeed...

The Tale Of Two Legends, as I do recall it...

  Indeed...

Even so, is the very metal at times referred to as Galehydde...

  Yes...

For its very sheen and somewhat shiny glow...

Why, the very metal is usually coated upon yet another...

The very reason to guard against rust...

To say nothing of how it deflects wear and tear...

  Indeed.

As for the metal inside, why...

I do believe I shall allow the dear lass to tell you of it all...

  Moving along...

  *****

Victoria: ... before being finished with the very tempered blade of Igne-ite.

  Igne-ite...

  Yes...

Do fail to be fooled by the very name...

Why, even so as it does find itself only to be minded near volcanoes and things of the sort...

Is it also the very sort of metal that fails to carry any sort of elemental attributes...

Save for the very fact that it is fully immune to wear and tear from the effects of fire...

  Indeed...

A most interesting blade, I would call it...

  Fire and ice...

And wind as well, I suppose...

All the while being immune to water...

  Yes...

  The very bladed axe...

  Fren: Oh my...

The very man held his hand to his chin and marvelled...

As the young lad merely looked upon it...

Not a change in his physical eyes, one would say...

  Victoria: I have called her...

Yes, most blacksmiths and weapon traders of the sort do name their weapons...

'Tis part and parcel of the trade...

  Victoria: ... Converser.

  Fren: Ooooh!

Victoria: For when one shall require to have a difficult conversation, why... does this one surely sort it out.

  Indeed...

Well, the blade was finished with paint, oh, I have already told you of that much...

  Moving along...

  Fren: Oh, my...

And the lady did not stop there, I should say...

Victoria: Even so, the very blade...

Her eyes turned to those of the young lad...

The very boy who merely looked upon the blade...

Why, I suppose there remains something to be said of the woman...

For she continued to speak undaunted, even after witnessing that...

  Yes...

  Moving along...

  Fren: Yes?

Victoria: ... is best suited for battle against massive monsters. The very likes of which plague travellers upon the woods. Why, I thought it best for one such as yourself, dear boy...

  Indeed.

A most thoughtful gift, one would say...

Why, to be hunted by a beast...

A most common scenario for one foolish enough to leave their nation...

  Yes...

  Moving along...

  Fren: My, my...

  Indeed...

Fren: ... a glorious weapon, I should say...

  Victoria: Indeed.

The very woman took a step back and with yet another curtsy...

And a bowing of her head...

Victoria: Dear lad, if you may...

  Yes...

The very moment the one who owns a weapon takes it from the very shop...

  The very blacksmith...

  All those things, I say...

  Indeed...

  And thereof...

Did the very young lad with his right hand...

Simply pluck the very blade from the carriage window...

Pulling it up with all its mass and girth...

Why, Fren Chavalier even took a full step back just to avoid the sheer danger of being sliced to pieces by the very blade...

Well, 'twas his imagination, one would say...

For as the blade left the young lad's front as he lifted it and found itself swung around all so effortlessly...

  I assure you, dear reader...

The very man was never in any danger of being cut...

And all the same, was he also still somewhat in awe...

Having witnessed the boy lift this axe so simply...

As though some sort of plaything, I would say...

  Why...

'Twas as a child holding onto a pen, one would say...

  Hmmm...

  Nay...

  Perhaps a light block of...

  No, no...

  A light pole...

  Yes...

  No, not yet...

  Indeed.

A young man with a light pole of wood...

  Yes...

For the very young lad did lift it to his side and inspect it...

All the while as madam Hathaway did hold her hands to her heart and smile...

Victoria: Oh, my. You are a natural, young lad. The way you motion your hands and body with it...

And of the very same, did she speak of Jake Phyr simply lifting it up and down as though nothing was of it.

  Fren: Indeed.

Why, he did still keep his distance, save a bladed part or perhaps the back of the blade so happened upon him...

  Yes.

  Even so, all the while...

Fren: A mighty blade, ey, young lad?

  As he smilingly went on...

Did the very young woman return to the back of her carriage...

  All to bring with her...

  Victoria: Here.

  A satchel...

  Yes...

A very set of straps put together...

The very reason to allow for less, how you say, stressed carriage of the very blade at hand...

  Yes...

And of it all why, did the very young woman soon present it to the lad...

Showing it unto him, before, with a smile...

Walking to the door of her carriage...

Coming out, widely smiling to say...

Victoria: Allow me to place it on your person, dear lad.

  Indeed.

  However...

  Fren: Now, now, madam Hathaway.

  Victoria: Hmmm?

Fren: Think it not best for our dear lad and sterling warrior to first off clothe himself properly?

  Victoria: Oh, why... well...

The very woman was quite upset to hear that...

  However and only to continue...

Victoria: ... very well then, I shall continue.

  And Fren maintained his smile...

All before in his heart turning up yet another smile...

And thereof, did he say to the young lad...

Fren: Why, my dear lad... How do you like the weapon?

And of the very same, did he look upon it with the same eyes...

Before turning to the very woman by the name of Victoria Hathaway...

And smilingly as she was, yes...

  She did continue to smile...

  Jake: Thank you.

  Yes...

That was all he managed to say...

As Fren Chavalier did soon say...

Fren: Oh, ho, ho! Look at that, my dear lass. He does indeed like your weapon.

  Yes...

Victoria Hathaway only paused for a mere moment...

  Before soon after laughing fakely...

  Even so, oddly...

Relieved in a sense of the word...

  Yes...

Victoria: Well, I should hope that he would. 'Tis no cheap weapon, I would say.

  Yes...

The very madam did say that...

  And of the very same...

  Why...

Fren: Well, my dear boy... it would seem that there remains only one carriage for you to visit, that being mine.

  Yes...

He did say this turning to him...

However, the young lad remained utterly responseless...

Well, a better word would be...

That the boy did not even look to his face...

  Nay...

He simply kept his eyes on the blade...

  The very paint on it...

Before him and Madam Hathaway were ushered into the very first of the carriages...

  Yes...

The very one concerned with distinct and many, many meats...

  Yes...

Why, I did speak of this before...

I shan't do it once more...

  Yes...

  The very three of them...

The young lady carrying the satchel, of course...

  Following them from behind...

  All the while.

Fren: And now, young boy, I do ask you. What sort of meat would you like?

'Twas just as he arrived to his shop that he, the very man that he was...

  Leapt into his own carriage...

  Window first.

  Yes...

  Simply leaping into it.

  And thereof...

Fren: Welcome dear boy, and a beautiful day unto you my dear lady.

  Victoria: Charmed.

  The very lad...

Why, he did fail to answer yet once more...

Fren: What I would like to offer you is not merely meat as you see before you, nay...

The very man walked to the back of his carriage...

Before arriving with a single cut of red meat...

The sort you'd expect from some sort of land animal...

Nay, a large lesser beast or something of the sort...

  Or perhaps a large boar...

  Hmmm...

Well, only time and knowledge would answer that question...

  Indeed.

  Moving along...

  The very...

  Hmmmm....

  Time is up, I'm afraid.

Do have a properly good time, dear reader.

Fail to let the weather bring you to your knees.

'Tis most unbecoming of a human.
