Chapter XXVIII – The ball and the return

She was extremely annoyed by how things had turned out. Gambling irritated her immensely. But unfortunately, it also attracted her. However, it was almost time for the last party at the mansion. Moreover, it was being held in her honor, to celebrate her victory in the tournament. She had no intention of letting it ruin her mood. Soon she will have to return to her daily life at the academy, filled with endless studying and training. This was her last moment of relaxation.

She went to the main hall, where she was greeted with warm applause. Deng Zhifang was also there, occupying a place of honor. The archer she defeated was also there. As it turned out, she won the match for third place, although May did not attend it, but it made sense considering her abilities.

The reception was much more lavish than the previous ones. The number of desserts was staggering, each dish looked like something out of a fairy tale. The wealth of the hosts was evident. Many people started talking to her, but it was basically a repeat of what had happened before.

When she found herself alone for a moment, she decided to talk to the archer named Zhong. She didn't seem like a very talkative person, but when May saw her skills, she knew there was something special about her.

“You were really good. Where did you learn to use a bow like that?”

“But I wasn't good enough,” she said reluctantly after a moment. She clearly didn't feel like talking, but forced herself to continue. “My father was a hunter. He taught me everything.”

This was surprising, as it must have meant that she came from a family of non-cultivators, since hunters were a profession reserved for mortals. Such people hardly ever made it to the Outer Court. She was therefore a rare case.

“That's amazing. Your father must have been very talented, May,” she said. The girl seemed shy.

“Yes, he was good. The best.” Seeing that the girl wasn't interested in talking, she went over to Deng Zhifang. Although she didn't like him that much, he was still a better option than listening to the boring conversations of elderly people.

  “Oh, May, how's the pill?”

“Amazing. It really lives up to its name.” She replied, and he chuckled.

May decided to ask what the prize for second place was.

“What did I get? Hmm, a few things, actually.” He said, lifting up the necklace hanging around his neck.

“That's the first thing. It slightly increases your sensitivity to the Qi in your surroundings, not bad. I also got some half-century-old ginger and some cultivation materials. Not bad, but they're not even worth half of your prize.” “It doesn't sound so bad,” she replied with a sigh. Then she reached for one of the cakes on the table. It had three layers and was filled with fruits that didn't exist on earth, resembling peaches in taste.

A few hours later, the party was coming to an end. Tomorrow she would have to return to the academy. She went outside into the garden and sat down on one of the benches. The sky was clear and free from light pollution, so all the stars were very clearly visible. She stared at the moon. It seemed much biggest than on Earth, but she was unsure if it was due to its actual size or just the distance. In any case, it was a full moon tonight. She appreciated its appearance, which was so different from the Earth's moon

She looked at the sky. None of the constellations looked the same. She knew she was in a different world, but it crossed her mind that somewhere among those stars was Earth. After all, she didn't know the truth about her reincarnation. She might as well still be in the same world.

I don't know if I'm even in the same universe, but even if I am, who knows if it's the same galaxy? I'll never go back to Earth.

She pondered this for a long time as she watched the stars, but soon returned to the building and went to bed. However, she couldn't fall asleep for a long time.

At one point, just as she was about to fall asleep, she heard a knock on the door. At first, she was convinced it was just a dream.

After a moment, however, the knocking continued and she was fully awake. Someone was really standing at her door. She felt a slight uneasiness. No one should normally knock on her door in the middle of the night. Many thoughts crossed her mind, but they all seemed irrational. She didn't know whether she should open it.

She moved closer to the door and put her head closer to hear something. The person behind the door must have heard her approaching.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

  Fuck.

  “M-May?”

She heard a quiet voice coming from behind the door. She couldn't tell who it was. It was too quiet and muffled by the heavy door. She thought about pretending not to be there, but something seemed wrong.

She overcame her fear and decided to speak up.

“Who is there? Do you know what time it is?” she replied, trying to sound confident.

“May, it's Deng Zhifang. Please, you have to help me. I don't feel well.” A voice came from behind the door.

After a moment, May realized that it was indeed his voice. However, she still felt that something was missing.

Wait a minute... I know, he's a succubus, right? Or rather, an incubus? In any case, what would a sex-crazed demon be doing at my door?

Of course, he was half human, but she still didn't trust him. She didn't know how Cambions behaved, but she sensed the risk. Although he didn't seem like a bad guy, going into a lonely girl's room in the middle of the night was pretty suspicious. Especially when it came to a hybrid of a demon that was known for sex.

She didn't want to let him in.

“I'm sorry, but if you're hurt, you should wake up one of the household servants. I wouldn't know how to help you.” She had no intention of letting him in. After a moment, she remembered that it was a full moon tonight. Could that have something to do with it?

“They... They can't help me. Please.” He replied in a hushed voice. Even if he was telling the truth, how could she help him? She didn't know anything about medicine. She also didn't have anything that could help him. It was complete nonsense.

“I'm sorry, but as I was saying...” Suddenly, she heard a loud noise coming from behind the door. It sounded as if something had fallen to the floor. Silence followed.

“Are you there?” There was no answer.

May fell into deep thought. Should she check it out? She returned to the door of her room. From her belongings, she took out the spear she had received from her weapons master.

If she was going to see what was happening, she at least had to be able to defend herself.

If I scream, someone should be able to hear me. And even if he tries to do something to me, I did beat him once... Sort of.

She slowly opened the door with the key. Then, with one hand, she tried to slowly open the door. However, it was blocked. Something was indeed lying on the floor.

He had indeed fallen and he did indeed look bad. She tried to get outside. She had to help him. Somehow, she managed to squeeze through the door. She took him by the arm and moved him. Then she tugged him by the arm, dragged him into the room, and seated him in one of the armchairs. He was still unconscious. She decided to take a closer look at him.

He had changed; his hair was now almost entirely purple, and his skin had become much paler. His physique had also changed. She had never seen anything like it. She realized that he really wasn't human. However, they still did not know what was wrong with him. She tried to wake him up by shaking him vigorously, but nothing changed.

“Zhifang, can you hear me? Hey!”

However, no matter how loudly she shouted, he remained unresponsive. She didn't know what to do.

Finally, she approached the jug of cold water. She didn't know if it was a good idea, but she poured its contents over his head.

It worked, he shouted violently and stood up, but after a moment he fell back onto the chair, unable to stand on his feet. He was breathing heavily.

“What's going on? Why do you look like that?” she asked, even though she had a pretty good idea of what was going on.

However, she couldn't reveal that she knew his secret. She decided that it would be best to pretend she didn't know anything.

“I...” He started, but clearly didn’t know what to say. “I’ve had this condition since I was a child. Especially on nights like this. It’s a sort of illness.”

  “An illness, you say.”

  “Yes...”

He replied and then fell silent. It was clear that he was not in the best condition. Although she felt she would regret it, she still decided to ask.

“And how could I help you?”

“You see... Usually, a little bit of another person's Qi helps me,” he replied quietly, slightly embarrassed.

“Qi?” she asked. Well, considering his race, it isn't as bad as I had expected.

“Yes, but it has to be another person, and it really has to be. . .” He didn’t finishing his sentence. May suspected he wanted to say “a woman,” but didn’t want to freak her out.

Well, from what I know in mythology, succubi need the life energy of others to survive. He's half-human, but I suspect he still needs some. Well, if he just wants Qi, I don't mind.

At first, she was afraid that he wanted her body, but she had no problem giving him some of her Qi energy.

He probably had no one else to go here.

She placed her hand on his forehead.

She activated her Qi Control. She had become quite good at it and was able to manipulate it quite well. She began to transfer energy from her entire body to her hand, and then to his body.

The boy groaned. May immediately pulled her hand away from him.

“Can you stop? Do that again and I'll change my mind.” She said. She didn't like the sound he made. What if someone had heard him?

“I'm sorry... It won't happen again... Please, it helps.” Seeing his expression, she sighed and continued. At one point, she noticed that his hair was beginning to return to its normal color. His body, meanwhile, began to shrink and become smaller. She used much more Qi than she had expected. When the boy seemed to return to normal, she took her hand away from him.

“Thank you for your help. I won't forget this, but... Could you keep this to yourself?” he asked.

Lately, a lot of people have been asking me that. First a ghost, then a group of mages, and now him. Who do they think I am?

“Of course, that's not a problem for me,” she replied briefly. She didn't want to get involved in his affairs, but it was too late for that. At least she wanted to limit her involvement as much as possible. “It's getting late. If you're feeling better, why don't you go back to your place?”

“Oh, yes. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to take advantage of your hospitality. But thank you again.” He said, bowed, and left her room.

She felt a headache coming on. Too much had happened recently, and she had the vague feeling that it would all explode into one big problem any minute now.

She felt so tired that as soon as she closed the door, she threw herself onto the bed and fell into a deep sleep.
