Chapter 13: Getting Back to the Basics

“Oh, hey I just thought of something I wanted to ask you about,” I say between bites of the stir-fried vegetables and small golden grain that tastes like a bigger rice.

“Shoot,” Ivy says after drinking a sugary cocktail of some sort through a small straw.

“How does this world have the same days and stuff that I had back on Earth? And how come I can understand everything anyone says or read any text I see?” I ask while slowly setting my utensil down and staring off into the ether with a deadpan look.

“You’ve been here for almost three full days and you finally ask yourself why everything has been making sense?” She asks with a slight smile.

“I’ve been shell shocked for the almost three days straight, alright? I just didn’t think about it until I was able to calm down a bit and get back to some form of normalcy,” I say while shrugging my shoulders with a stringy vegetable hanging out of my mouth.

“Hahaha I guess that’s fair. Yeah, it’s a trait with Traversers. You have the ability to automatically translate any language or text to be understood by your native language and vice versa when talking to someone,” Ivy responds with a jubilant laugh.

“I guess that makes sense. Is that why Raffa was more stilted in his speech than the others?” I ask like I had a huge epiphany.

“Nah, he’s just quiet. He probably has other languages he knows, but the general population of the planet has a ‘common’ language and then dialects between their own tribes,” she answers after wiping away tears from her laughing fit.

“Fair enough. Are there any books you’d recommend I study on my off-time then?” I ask while cleaning up my leftovers and putting my plate into a metal container. I press on a rune on the side of the container and a light mist appears in the container and the plate and utensils come out sparkling clean and dry.

“I would sign up for some of the basic courses that the guild offers for new adventurers and then go from there instead of self-studying. Probably go for all of the beginning mana control, affinity theory, Soulspace development, skill acquisition, and evolution guide courses you can. They’ll all be useful for you.” she answers sagaciously.

“Duly noted! In that case, I’m going to head down to the courses boards and start signing up for whatever I can fit into the schedule. You wanna come with?” I ask while putting on a light jacket and slipping into my sandal-like shoes.

“Nah, I’m going to clean up leftovers and then get some rest. The World Guide transition used a lot of my energy reserves so I need to rest up to restore those,” Ivy answers with a small stretch and a yawn.

“No worries! Thanks for dinner Ivy! I’ll be back soon. Feel free to takeover wherever you want to sleep and I’ll take whatever is left,” I say while activating the rune to open the door.

“There’s a nice hanging bed that’s my size and dressed up to look like a tree branch that I’ve got my eye on. I’ll get it all set up in one of the open corners in the main bedroom by the time you’re back,” she says while waving back.

I walk out into the corridor and make my way towards the stairs to go down to the main floor. After reaching the classes board I find one of every subject that Ivy mentioned and look to get some of the scheduling to work out. Eventually I’m able to get it scheduled to take one every other weekday and then two on my off day. According to the text they’re all basic classes with free inclusion into the intermediate and advanced classes as long as you pass the final exam by demonstrating your improvement.

After getting my class assignments done, I head back to the apartment. I open the door and take off my jacket and sandals. I slowly open the main bedroom and see Ivy snoozing on a tree branch that’s attached to the wall in the corner. I make my way over to the bed and get comfortable and reflect on my new life. Slowly, but surely, I fall asleep into a restful slumber.
