Chapter 6: Hey! Listen!

I blink away the sleep from my eyes as I push something off me. I feel cold and my entire body is screaming in pain as I fully open my eyes. Instead of the sun being above the canopies like it was before, I see an orange glow warming the forest from the horizon as the sun slowly sets. I just lay there and breathe slowly for a few minutes as I start to be able to bear the pain I’m feeling.

I slowly and methodically feel around my body for injuries. I feel like my leg is unmovable and completely disfigured without even looking at it. My stomach feels shredded and I can barely breathe as I draw ragged breaths into my lungs. I finally notice the pinging notification in the corner of my vision and mentally click on it.

“Wow that’s a lot…” I whisper to myself as I wheeze. It’s harder and harder to get more breath in.

“Oh, my goodness you’re alive!” Exclaims a shrill voice above me.

“I thought you were dead for sure! I’m so glad!” They say as I feel a slight touch on my shoulder.

I open my eyes and look over and see the glowing green figure of a small woman with butterfly-like wings on her back. She has small angular features, freckles, and a pixie cut on her light brown hair. Her skin is almost see-through with a very light green tinge to it. She’s wearing a green leafy dress that goes just above her knees and, if she weren’t about four inches tall, I’d think she was an elf of some kind.

  “Yeah… Barely, apparently…” I wheeze out.

“Please let me help you!” She pleads as she spreads her arms out in front of her and points her palms at me.

Green light starts to intermingle up her arms and flow down towards her palms and mixes with a pale yellow light as it disperses a delicate, mist-like substance into the air. I feel a light energy start touching my body and then feel the wounds and holes in my body start to knit themselves back together. After the flesh is slowly healed back into shape I feel pressure and thrumming pain as the bones in my leg start cracking and fixing themselves into their original place.

“Wow that hurts more than healing magic ever should!” I grunt through gritted teeth as I slowly sit up and push more branches off me.

“I’m sorry. That’s because my healing magic isn’t very high leveled and my skill isn’t very good with it either.” The little fairy-like creature says.

“I’m just glad I’m not dead, so no worries. What’s your name and uhh… what are you?” I ask after the healing mist disperses away and the magic finishes.

“My name is Ivy and I’m a Forest Sprite.” She replies with a light smile on her green lips.

“Nice to meet you Ivy. Name’s Alaina.” I respond as I start to open my menu.

“Hey, can I ask you something Ivy?” I ask after turning my attention away from the status menus.

“Sure! How can I help my hero of the day?” She responds happily with a little too much glee in her eyes.

“What does it mean if my luck stat stopped a deathblow?” I question.

“Wait, what level are or were you before that fight?” She asks quickly before answering my question.

“Uhh level one. I kinda just got here. Are you part of any religion or anything?” I ask to see if I can trust her.

“Of course. All Guardian Spirits are followers of Vaelorym or one of his subordinates.” She responds with fervor in her voice.

“Guardian Spirits?” I question out loud.

“Guardian Spirits refer to protectors of the natural order in different environments. For forests it’s a Forest Sprite like me. For mountainous terrain it’s Pixies of the Peaks, Swamps have Mire Watchers, and so on and so forth. They all have pretty much the same job and answer to essentially the same people. We even have a council to help each other if necessary.” She answers very helpfully.

“Ah so I can trust you and you aren’t held by any political structures in the world then. Well, I’m a Traverser and I have Vaelorym’s Trace at the True level.” I say as the gears in my head start turning and noting down any information she gives.

“Thank you for saving me! Can I help repay the favor by trying to give you a blessing then? I would also like to offer you the option to have me become your vassal to Vaelorym and be your World Guide instead of having you need to gain one through a skill or Guild!” She squeals quickly without any hint of pause in her voice.

“What does any of that mean for me exactly? I’m extremely new to this world.” I respond cautiously.

“The blessing I can’t really tell you as it changes based on the person, their luck stat, or their level of blessing. I’ve never seen it done on someone with a True level blessing though so that’ll be interesting. As for the World Guide it means I will become a tied familiar to you and can help teach you anything you need to know and help guide you along with whatever you choose.” She answers calmly.

“Meh sure why not then. Healing magic is always useful and you seem pretty cool, but I will warn you now, if you float behind my head and say “Hey listen” multiple times I’m going to backhand you back to this forest.” I say with a joking smile on my face.

“Ooookaaayyy… I’ll try to refrain from that phrasing then… If there’re no other stipulations, Alaina we can begin with the Blessing.” She comments slowly with as much confusion as her little face can handle.

“Please do.” I respond while barely holding back a chuckle.

“Let’s get this show on the road then.” She says while motioning for me to lay back down comfortably.

As I lay down, she raises her palms again and the same green light starts flowing down her arms. I raise my eyes and see a trickle of liquid light fall slowly through the canopy above us and it mixes with the green light in her arms. It slowly flows out of her arms and I see twin flows of green light and the same white light that came out of the trees as they mix into a single flowing light that descends around me. It flows around my body and goes into my heart as my vision flickers with a white flash and then I fall unconscious.

Can I please stop getting knocked out in any way shape or form?
