Heavenly Account 48: The Merchant

Celestina and Terina had traversed the void of space for what felt like an eternity, their sleek starship slicing through the nebue of an uncharted gaxy. The ship's sensors had finally pinged with promise: a habitable world, teeming with life signatures that mirrored humanity's own. As they descended through the swirling atmosphere, the ndscape unfolded below—a verdant expanse of rolling hills dotted with ancient ruins, where lithe, human-like creatures roamed in nomadic tribes. These beings, with skin shimmering like polished obsidian and eyes glowing faintly in the twilight, moved with an ethereal grace, tending to glowing flora and whispering incantations to the stars.

"Look at them," Terina murmured, her voice hushed in awe as she piloted the ship to a soft nding near a crystalline ke. "They're like us, but... not. Do you think they're friendly?"

Celestina, ever the cautious explorer, adjusted her environmental suit's visor. "Friendly or not, we need resources. Our fuel cells are low, and this gaxy's anomalies have drained our reserves. Let's scout carefully."

The duo ventured out, their boots crunching on bioluminescent grass. The air was crisp, ced with the scent of unfamiliar spices. As they crested a hill, they spotted a peculiar structure: an arched gate of iridescent stone, pulsing with a soft, blue light. Runes etched into its surface shifted like living script, and at its center, a vortex swirled zily, hinting at a portal beyond.

"A gate," Celestina said, scanning it with her handheld device. "Energy readings off the charts. It leads somewhere... stable. Earth-like atmosphere on the other side."

Terina's eyes widened. "Earth? But we're light-years from home."

"Not our Earth," Celestina replied, her brow furrowing. "The readings say 'Earth 02.' A parallel variant? We have to investigate."

With a shared nod, they stepped through. The world on the other side was a bizarre fusion of the familiar and the surreal—a bustling marketpce under a sky streaked with auroras, where vendors hawked wares from floating stalls. Human-like figures mingled here too, but these were unmistakably from diverse Earthly cultures, interspersed with the obsidian-skinned nomads from the outer world.

As they emerged, a single figure materialized before them—a young woman with sleek bck hair tied in a traditional bun, dressed in a flowing kimono adorned with cherry blossom motifs. She bowed gracefully, her dark eyes sparkling with an otherworldly wisdom.

"Welcome, travelers," she said in fwless English, her voice carrying a melodic lilt. "I am Minana Kotaro. You have crossed into Earth 02 through the gate. What brings you to my domain?"

Celestina and Terina exchanged gnces, caught off guard by her directness. "We're explorers," Terina expined. "From... well, another pce. We didn't expect to find someone like you here."

Minana smiled enigmatically. "Many come seeking wonders. And wonders I provide." With a wave of her hand, seven items materialized in a shimmering array before them, hovering in the air like artifacts from a dream. Each pulsed with tent power, drawing the eye irresistibly.

"The gate draws seekers," Minana continued. "For a price, these gifts are yours. Choose wisely, for they bend reality in ways you cannot unsee."

The first item was a weathered tome, its cover embossed with swirling glyphs. "For thirty U.S. dolrs," Minana said, "this book grants passage. Those who take it often pester their parents with tales of adventure, only to vanish after encircling it with candles—one or more, it matters not. Police reports list them missing for two days. Upon return, they speak of immersion in the book's world, emerging with abilities and powers drawn from its pages—strength, flight, elemental control—while appearing utterly normal to the untrained eye."

Terina reached out tentatively, but Celestina pulled her back. "Sounds like a trap. Or a transformation."

Minana's smile didn't waver. "Transformation, yes. But voluntary."

The second item gleamed darkly—a small bck pill. "Five thousand dolrs," Minana intoned. "Swallow it, and creation bends to your will. Whatever you type into a phone or scribe on paper manifests in reality. A castle from a sketch, a fortune from a note. But beware the unintended words."

Celestina's mind raced. "That's godlike power. Why sell it?"

"Power is only as dangerous as its wielder," Minana replied.

The third was an ornate medallion, etched with digital runes. "Twenty thousand dolrs. Wear it, and weekends become portals. You vanish, reappearing with legions from the games you cherish most—armies of pixels turned flesh, loyal to your command. Knights from fantasy realms, soldiers from virtual wars."

Terina gasped. "Imagine bringing an entire guild to life!"

The fourth item towered imposingly: a statue of Yahweh, carved from luminous marble. "Half a million dolrs," Minana said solemnly. "Worship it faithfully, and a legion of angels descends to shield you, as long as the Ten Commandments are upheld. Break them, and fallen angels cim your soul—no mercy, no appeal."

Celestina felt a chill. "Divine protection... at what cost?"

"The cost of virtue," Minana answered.

The fifth was deceptively simple—a miniature model of a house, yet it radiated an unbreakable aura. No price was named immediately, but Minana gestured. "This abode defies destruction. One thief attempted entry and turned to ash. Armies assaulted it with every weapon known; it endured. Even hurled into the sun, it floated unscathed amid sor fres, ejected into the void, eternally whole."

  "How much?" Terina asked, intrigued.

Minana's eyes gleamed. "Priceless to some, but negotiable for the worthy."

The sixth was a thick grimoire, bound in ethereal leather. "One million dolrs. Pce a photo and lore within, denote the mana or faith required, and summons spring forth—creatures, heroes, entities from your imagination or myth, bound to serve."

Finally, the seventh: a sapling of the World Tree, its branches fractal and infinite. "One billion dolrs. Nurture it, and you forge realms and universes of your desire—pocket dimensions, alternate realities, shaped by your whims."

As the items hovered, a lone traveler stumbled through the gate behind them—a disheveled man from their own gaxy, eyes wide with desperation. He approached Minana, fumbling for currency. "The book," he whispered, handing over thirty dolrs.

Minana nodded, and the tome floated into his hands. The man vanished into the crowd, but Celestina and Terina knew his fate: a candle-lit ritual, a disappearance, and a return forever changed.

"What is this pce?" Celestina demanded. "Why these items?"

Minana tilted her head. "Earth 02 is a nexus of possibilities, where the veil between worlds thins. I am its guardian, offering keys to those who dare. Will you partake, or merely observe?"

Terina gnced at Celestina, her hand inching toward the medallion. "We came for resources... but this is more. Much more."

As the auroras danced overhead, the explorers stood at the threshold of temptation, the seven wonders beckoning them into the unknown.
