Chapter 88 — Warm Evening

The house felt different after school.

Not silent — never silent — but softer.

The te afternoon sunlight poured through the living room windows in warm orange stripes across the floor. Dust motes floated zily in the air, and the gentle hum of the air conditioner blended with the distant noise of passing cars outside.

Eri stood just inside the doorway after taking off her shoes.

  She didn’t move right away.

School always left a lingering tension in her shoulders, like she’d been holding herself too carefully all day — every movement measured, every reaction controlled. Even on a “good” day, it stayed in her muscles.

  Her tails twitched once… twice…

  Then slowly rexed.

  She was home.

Mom set her bag down near the table and looked back at her. “You did well today.”

  “I broke a teacher.”

“You survived today,” Mom corrected gently.

That made Eri’s ears lower a little less.

Mira passed by toward the kitchen. “I’m grabbing snacks. Recovery food is mandatory after social combat.”

  Eri gave a small nod.

She drifted toward the couch without quite deciding to. Her feet carried her there automatically now, like her body had started memorizing safe pces. The cushions dipped softly under her weight as she sat sideways, tucking her legs up.

Her tails curled around her thighs on instinct.

Mom sat beside her a moment ter.

  Not touching yet.

  Just close.

Eri leaned a tiny bit closer without realizing it.

Mom noticed immediately — but didn’t comment — only resting her arm along the back of the couch behind her. The silent permission lingered there.

It took almost a full minute.

Then Eri slowly slid sideways until her shoulder pressed into her mom’s side.

  “…tired?” Mom asked quietly.

  “Mhm.”

Her voice came out small. Not upset — just drained.

Mom gently guided her with a hand at her arm. “Come here.”

Eri hesitated only a second before turning and climbing onto her p, settling sideways so she faced inward. Her legs folded across the couch, her head resting against her mom’s shoulder.

The contact alone made her exhale.

All the alertness she held at school melted frighteningly fast. Her ears drooped and her tails slowly loosened, draping across both of them.

Mom began lightly stroking her hair.

  Careful around the ears.

  Always careful.

“How was English?” she asked softly.

  “Normal… I think.”

  “Any trouble?”

Eri shook her head against her shoulder. “People stare less when they’re busy writing.”

  “That’s good.”

  A pause.

Mom’s fingers traced gentle lines down her back — not enough to tickle, just steady grounding contact.

  “Economics?”

“Still confusing. But nobody asked questions today.”

  “Science?” Mom asked knowingly.

Eri buried her face slightly. “I didn’t even do anything…”

Mom smiled into her hair. “Some people are simply not prepared for meeting you.”

  “That’s not comforting.”

  “It’s honest.”

Mira returned with snacks and immediately slowed when she saw the scene. She didn’t interrupt — just quietly pced a bowl on the table and sat in the armchair nearby.

  Domestic peace resumed.

Eri didn’t move from her p.

  Minutes passed.

Her breathing gradually synced with Mom’s, small and steady. Every so often her tails gave a slow content flick. The rhythmic petting had shifted from comforting to necessary — like her body had decided this was recharge time.

  Mom spoke again eventually.

  “Did you feel scared today?”

Eri thought for a long time.

  “…not like yesterday.”

Her fingers lightly held the fabric of Mom’s shirt. “More like… waiting for something bad to happen.”

“That’s normal after a big change.”

“I keep thinking people will suddenly hate me once they get used to me.”

Mom’s hand paused briefly before continuing.

  “They won’t.”

  “You don’t know that.”

“You’re kind. You apologize when things aren’t your fault. You worry about others before yourself.” She gently adjusted Eri’s hair away from her eyes. “People notice those things more than ears and tails.”

  Eri didn’t answer immediately.

Her ears gave a slow uncertain twitch.

  “…what if they don’t?”

“Then you’ll still come home,” Mom said simply.

The words nded heavier than they sounded.

  Eri’s grip tightened slightly.

Her tails pulled closer around both of them, unconsciously anchoring.

They stayed like that for a long time — long enough the sun shifted lower, long enough the room dimmed to evening gold.

  Eventually Eri spoke again, quieter.

  “I like it here.”

  Mom smiled softly. “Good.”

  “I mean… like this.”

Her voice was nearly a whisper.

  Mom understood anyway.

Her hand moved to gently scratch just behind one ear.

  Eri froze.

  Then immediately melted.

Her shoulders dropped, and a tiny involuntary sound escaped her throat before she could stop it. Her face turned bright red as her tails fluffed dramatically.

  “I— I didn’t— that just—”

Mom pretended not to notice the sound. “Sensitive?”

  “…very.”

  “Good to know.”

  “Please don’t weaponize that…”

  Mira snorted from the chair.

The atmosphere warmed with quiet ughter — soft, not overwhelming.

  Night crept closer.

  Eri hadn’t moved once.

Her eyes had closed somewhere along the way, not asleep but resting — existing without thinking. Her body felt heavier in the comforting way that meant her mind had finally stopped running scenarios about tomorrow.

Mom continued petting absentmindedly, slower now.

Eventually she spoke again, barely above a murmur.

  “You did really well today.”

  Eri’s eyes stayed closed.

“…can we do this again tomorrow?”

  Mom’s expression softened further.

  “Every day you need.”

Eri rexed completely at that answer.

  Her tails settled.

And for the first time since everything changed…

  She didn’t worry about morning.

AnnouncementAnd if the chapter is based on school it will mostly be science or an event so school chapters will usually take pce every other day
