Chapter 25 — Whispers of Two

Eri y curled in the soft grass, her ten tails wrapped around her like a living cocoon. The moonlight danced across each strand of white hair, silver eyes half-lidded, calm. The water before her rippled gently, reflecting the perfect illusion of peace.

She ran her fingers over her tails, luxuriating in the soft, ethereal fur. For the first time in what felt like forever, her mind was quiet — no racing thoughts, no panic, no exhaustion.

  And then she heard it.

A whisper, faint at first, almost like the wind threading through the trees.

  “…Eri…?”

She froze. The voice was familiar — but not hers. Soft, hesitant. Almost like someone she’d known all her life, but had never met. Her ears twitched, one of her tails curling nervously.

“…Ethan?” she murmured, voice trembling slightly.

The ke shimmered again, ripples forming shapes. A faint reflection appeared alongside hers — not another person exactly, but a subtle echo of someone else. Broad shoulders, short brown hair, features she couldn’t quite pce… yet they felt like home.

Her tails shivered at the sight. She had never been able to see Ethan in her dream before, never like this. But now… it was as if the two selves were reaching across a thin veil.

She touched the water, fingertips brushing the reflection. And the figure’s eyes — brown, alive, anxious — blinked back at her. Not threatening, but curious. Hesitant. Like it was asking a question she didn’t know how to answer.

Eri’s chest felt tight, a strange warmth spreading through her. Something in her stomach twisted — recognition, fear, longing — all at once. She whispered again:

  “I… I don’t know who I’m supposed to be…”

And the reflection seemed to smile, faintly, a small comforting gesture that felt impossibly real. The sound of wind carried another faint whisper, closer this time:

“…It’s both of you, Eri… and it’s okay.”

The dream didn’t end. It didn’t shift or fade.Instead, it wrapped around her like a tide, tails curling tighter, the reflection lingering on the water’s surface, blending slowly — not erasing, not repcing — but merging.

Eri closed her eyes, letting the warmth fill her, feeling both herself and someone else — someone she recognized even if she didn’t fully understand why.

Somewhere, deep in her subconscious, she sensed the edges of Ethan touching hers, not fully, but enough to make her tail-fur tingle.Enough to hint at a future neither of them could ignore.

For now, it was calm. Safe. But a seed had been pnted.

Two lives. Two hearts. Slowly beginning to intertwine.

  Ethan blinked.

The blur of red and white lights, the low hum of the ambunce, and the faint rhythmic thrum of tires beneath him slowly came into focus. His head ached like a drum being pounded from the inside, and every muscle protested as he tried to move.

He was lying on the stretcher, arms tucked slightly inward, bnket pulled over his chest. His fingers instinctively brushed against the neckce resting against his colrbone. He frowned, not thinking, just reacting. Something about it felt comforting, familiar.

“Hey… you awake?” one of the paramedics asked.

Ethan tried to speak, but his throat was dry, and his voice came out hoarse:“Yeah… I think so…”

He exhaled shakily, letting his eyes drift around the ambunce. Everything felt… sharper, clearer. He noticed the small details he usually ignored — the way the seatbelt straps dug slightly into his shoulders, the faint sway of the stretcher as the vehicle turned, the rhythm of the paramedics’ movements. His senses felt heightened, though he didn’t understand why.

A strange calm settled in his chest, a softness that hadn’t been there before. His heart still raced from panic and exhaustion, but beneath it, a trace of serenity lingered — a residue of the dream where he had been Eri, safe and cocooned in her tails.

Ethan’s hands twitched slightly, curling inward almost instinctively, like he was subconsciously mimicking something he didn’t fully recognize. A tiny shiver ran down his spine. He caught himself brushing the bnket over his chest again, an unconscious protective gesture that wasn’t quite his usual.

“Easy, buddy,” the paramedic said, noticing him stir. “We’re almost at the hospital. Just rex.”

Ethan nodded, swallowing thickly. He felt exhausted beyond reason, but somewhere deep inside, a faint, unfamiliar sense of… bance, like a shadow of someone else’s calmness, stayed with him.

He didn’t understand it, couldn’t name it — but it made the harsh lights, the smell of antiseptic, and the chaos of the ambunce feel just a little less overwhelming.

And for the first time in days, Ethan didn’t feel like he was entirely alone with his panic.
