CHAPTER 12 — The Rift Core Pulses

CHAPTER 12 — The Rift Core Pulses

The hunters’ shouts faded behind Aiden as he slipped deeper into the ruined district, moving through smoke and broken concrete like a ghost. Their scanners still flickered wildly, glitching from the Force spike he’d caused. The Titan alert blared across the city, echoing off shattered buildings.

  But none of it mattered.

  The Rift was calling him.

  Not metaphorically.

  Not emotionally.

  Literally.

Every pulse from the swirling wound in the sky tugged at the Forces inside him—Gravity tightening, Pressure compressing, Heat flaring. It felt like invisible threads were pulling him forward, drawing him toward the epicenter of the chaos.

Aiden pressed a hand to his chest.

  “Stop,” he muttered. “Not yet.”

  The pull didn’t stop.

  It grew.

He moved through the empty streets, stepping over cracked pavement and melted metal. The air grew hotter the closer he got to the Rift. Not from Heat Force—this was something else. Something deeper. Something older.

Aiden rounded a corner and froze.

The Rift dominated the sky above the district, larger than he’d ever seen it. Its edges twisted violently, stretching outward like something inside was pushing to escape. Violet light spilled across the city, casting long, warped shadows.

The ground trembled beneath his feet.

  Aiden swallowed hard.

He’d seen Rifts before. Everyone had. They were terrifying, unpredictable, deadly.

  But this one felt… aware.

  Like it was watching him.

Another pulse rippled outward, distorting the air. Aiden staggered as the Forces inside him reacted—Gravity tightening like a fist, Pressure compressing like a vice, Heat flaring like a spark in dry grass.

  He gasped.

“What are you doing to me…?”

  The Rift pulsed again.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

  Aiden’s knees buckled.

He caught himself on a broken streetlight, breathing hard. The pull was stronger now—so strong it felt like his chest was being dragged forward by an invisible hook. His vision blurred at the edges. His heartbeat synced with the Rift’s rhythm.

  Thump.

  Pulse.

  Thump.

  Pulse.

  Aiden forced himself upright.

He wasn’t going to collapse here.

Not when he’d come this far.

Not when something inside the Rift was calling him specifically.

  He took a step forward.

  The pull eased.

  Another step.

The air grew heavier, thicker, charged with energy that made his skin prickle. The world around him warped slightly, bending like heat haze. Debris floated a few inches off the ground—small pieces of rubble, shards of glass, bits of metal.

  Aiden stared.

  “…gravity distortion.”

He reached out and touched a floating piece of concrete.

It drifted toward his hand, drawn to him like metal to a magnet.

  Aiden’s breath caught.

The Rift wasn’t just reacting to him.

  It was resonating with him.

  He stepped closer.

The distortion intensified. More debris lifted off the ground, swirling slowly around him. The air hummed with energy. His Forces pulsed in sync with the Rift—Gravity heavy, Pressure tight, Heat simmering beneath his skin.

  Aiden clenched his jaw.

“Fine,” he whispered. “If you want me…”

  He stepped forward again.

  The world shifted.

A wave of force rippled outward from the Rift’s center, slamming into the district. Hunters in the distance shouted as the shockwave knocked them off their feet. Buildings groaned. Windows shattered.

  Aiden didn’t move.

The wave passed through him like wind through smoke.

He stared up at the Rift.

Its center glowed brighter now—white?hot, swirling with impossible energy. The edges tore wider, stretching like fabric pulled too tight. The pull inside Aiden’s chest became unbearable.

  He took another step.

  The ground beneath him cracked.

  Another.

  The air vibrated.

  Another.

  His vision blurred.

He stood directly beneath the Rift now, staring up into the swirling vortex of light and shadow. The pull was overwhelming—like gravity itself was dragging him upward.

  Aiden exhaled.

  “Okay,” he whispered. “I’m coming.”

  He stepped into the light.

  The world snapped.

Aiden felt himself lifted off the ground, weightless for a heartbeat. The Forces inside him surged—Gravity twisting, Pressure compressing, Heat flaring. His vision exploded into white.

  Then everything inverted.

  Up became down.

  Down became sideways.

  Sideways became nothing.

Aiden’s stomach lurched as the world folded around him, twisting into impossible shapes. Colors he’d never seen flickered at the edges of his vision. Sound warped into a low, resonant hum.

  He reached out instinctively.

  His hand touched nothing.

  Then something.

  Then everything.

  The world snapped again.

Aiden hit solid ground hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs. He rolled onto his back, gasping, blinking rapidly as his vision adjusted.

He wasn’t in the city anymore.

  He wasn’t anywhere he recognized.

  He pushed himself upright slowly.

The sky above him was a swirling void of violet and black, streaked with arcs of lightning that moved like living things. Floating debris drifted through the air—chunks of buildings, shattered cars, pieces of streets ripped from the world outside.

Forceborn crawled across floating platforms, snarling and screeching.

  Aiden stared.

  “…the Rift interior.”

The pull inside his chest eased.

  But it didn’t disappear.

It pointed deeper into the void.

  Toward something waiting for him.

Aiden tightened his grip on the rebar.

“Alright,” he whispered. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
