[Vol.6] Ch.79 Invasion Part 1

What started out as a bad situation became infinitely worse. During the tail end of the storm, the wind direction changed as the hurricane passed the island. During that time, wind blew from the far end of the island towards our side. As the storm started to die down, myself and others heard multiple loud popping sounds, which I suspected were either from the dynamite storage or from the nitroglycerin plant itself. I feared what I thought was the worst case, that either a landslide or some other event had simply destroyed the facility.

What we found out five days later was much worse. A few demons made a trip around the island the long way, as their side of the island's tunnel had fresh landslide blocking it. The road around the outside of the island also had multiple landslides, destroying large portions of the road. Worse, however, was the reason why the demons made the trip.

Foreign demons. The kinds of which they'd never seen before. They spoke in the demon language, but with a somewhat difficult to understand accent. They arrived sometime during the storm, and while they weren't particularly numerous, they were strong. They quickly overwhelmed the workers on that side of the island, slaughtered many of them, and took the food stockpiles that they kept. There was minimal housing, as the workers had been relying on the fort on that side of the island to sleep, and due to the water level increasing with the storm, they'd moved everything from the fort to higher ground at both the acid factory and the nitroglycerin factory.

After the attack, the survivors attempted to initially flee through the tunnel, only to find it blocked, and so they had to backtrack during the heavy rain and wind to try to bypass the factory and follow the old road. Perhaps in a stroke of luck for us, the nitroglycerin facility is dangerous if you aren't aware of what you're doing, and the invaders seem to have set off a large number of the manufacturing lines. Our demons reported seeing multiple heavily injured individuals fleeing from the building as they attempted to sneak passed it in the treeline after a loud explosion rang out. Despite the wind and rain, quite a few of the demons said it sounded very similar to the incident from a few years ago where one of the manufacturing lines exploded.

Right now, we aren't even sure how many locations have the demons, or what the exact size of the invasion is. All we know is that the far side of the island is practically lost. Many roads are covered in mudslides and rockslides, which was what we were working on for a few days until we got news of the new demons. We've sent a few of the forestry demons who are familiar with traveling through rough terrain up to the siren stations to have the alarm sounded.

At the very least, we need the coastal fortifications to be aware of the threat. We hadn't expected to ever get caught by surprise like this though, so it's possible they'll misinterpret the sirens to mean a threat from the sea. If we manage to get out of this in one piece, we'll need to come up with a siren schedule with different meanings so the island can be alerted to multiple kinds of threats.

Zaka has gathered the army in two days, and the walls are manned at both the city and the lab. All other personnel that aren't necessary elsewhere on the island are now doing cleanup in the city. Basically, we don't know how these invading demons will behave, and are expecting some amount of them hiding out in various locations on the island. About half of the military, with myself and Zaka included, are planning on marching to the far side of the island to retake it and potentially capture any demons that we can.

There is a non-zero chance that even more demons have landed elsewhere on the island, but we're betting on the fact that we know the terrain and they don't to allow us to more quickly capture our enemies. The rain has finally relented, and we had our first day with actually clear skies. We heard two of the three sirens sounding during the midday, so the third station was either lost in the storm, captured, or potentially something less bad happened. In any case, I'm hoping we will get some info from the telescopes stationed at each as to where all on the island the enemy demons landed.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

After three days of travel around the landslide-ridden road through the craggy side of the island, we had gotten info from all three spotting points around the mountain. One had indeed been consumed by a landslide, it is unclear whether the demons stationed there survived or not, as the area it was at has collapsed, and the scout was unable to even find any components from the camp. That camp happened to also be the one facing the far side of the island, leaving us lacking crucial information for that side. We've sent another scout up that direction to gather information on the surrounding area.

The other two stations haven't spotted any wreckage along the coasts for the rest of the island, which hopefully means that there aren't any major landing parties anywhere around there. There could be some stragglers who washed ashore after a boat capsized further out, but at least there doesn't seem to be any large groups. We're a unit of about 100 individuals, though we're actually made up of the stronger half of the army. The terrain here has become quite difficult to pass, even with the parts of the road that are still intact. It's kind of wild to think how much of a difference good infrastructure makes to the travel times around the island.

As we approached the far side of the island after an additional four days, we were extra cautious. They may not have known what nitroglycerin or dynamite were when they got here, but it wouldn't take long for them to figure out how to at least make improvised explosives. We also had no idea where they might be located at this point.

The first place we checked was the explosives depot, and it thankfully seemed to be untouched. There was about half of a silo of dynamite that seemed untouched. The previous barge had launched a few days before the storm had arrived, so there wasn't that much of a stockpile. As we moved over the last ridge before the far valley, we saw that the nitroglycerin factory was heavily damaged. If I had to guess, most of the manufacturing had been wiped out.

From our vantage point, we could see that there was some movement in the fort. We carefully made our way into the valley, and cleared buildings as we went. The nitroglycerin factory's insides were a complete loss, with all of the internals being completely destroyed. The acid factory was in somewhat better condition, though it looks like one of the invaders was worse for wear for looking around. One of the storage tanks was broken, and a heavily acid burned corpse was strewn out on the ground in front of it. The most I could make out was that they were humanoid in shape, similar to most demons.

We started setting up camp near the acid facility, and sent scouts to the two naval guns that flank the bay to see if we have demons still stationed there, or if they had also been damaged in the storm. While we were getting ready, the scout we'd sent out with a telescope found us and relayed what they could see.

There was the wreckage of about 4 large boats along the coast just beyond the bay area. The boats were described as being extra large canoe shapes with stabilizers on the sides. They weren't as big as dwarven ships, but were bigger than our barges we've been sending out. By the scout's estimate, if they were full of demons about a hobgoblin's size, then each ship could hold 50 people along with a lot of supplies packed on. They mentioned there were dozens of crates all over the place around the wreckages as well. If there weren't any supplies, then they could easily fit 200 individuals on each boat.

Armed with that knowledge, we started more intelligence gathering operations. With the help of telescopes and knowledge of the landscape, even if it might have been shifted by landslides, we should be able to size up our enemy. Right now, the estimate is that 30 individuals are dead or missing from this side of the island. Perhaps some are hiding, but I expect quite a few were killed in the initial attack, just as the survivors we ran into reported. As much as I want prisoners that I can gather information from, I don't know how easy that is actually going to be to achieve.
