In meetings such as this one, there was usually silence following the reveal of whoever the client wanted to have assassinated. The member of the Rahk Guild would spend a few moments assessing the target and sending information regarding the target for even more assessments to take place.
That assessment could take moments if information on them was on hand, or even days if things need to be gathered. Never for more than a week though. Anyway, that silence did not happen and an answer was given immediately.
“No.”
The client was caught off guard. A voice not yet tinged with desperation, but a slight worry could be heard.
“Why not? The motto of the Rahk is even Death has a price. I am willing to pay.”
The initial silence the man expected arrived, and after a few moments the member of the Rahk Guild raised a single finger.
“1 what? A thousand? A million? Rank 1 or Rank 2? The latter is steep, but I can pay it in full in the next millennia.”
“No. 1 Universe. The cost you would need to pay to accept this request is for you to pay the worth of this Universe. All of it needs to be paid in full before the request can take place.”
Silence…and this time it was an uncomfortable sort of silence. The member of the Rahk Guild did not speak again during that silence and the man who was ready to offer many more things to help seal the deal was suddenly filled with anger.
Anger that threatened to explode, but he dared not do so. Killing a member of the Rahk Guild was one thing, if you caught them during an assassination attempt. They accepted that risk and would simply consider it a failed mission…of course their rate of failure was excruciatingly low.
But to kill a member of their guild during a negotiation for their services? That would be a death wish. No sane man would be able to remain sane and even more importantly alive for long if every waking moment of their lives was spent evading assassins from Rahk.
The man wasn’t that dumb.
But that didn’t mean he wasn’t filled with anger and not a small amount of desperation.
Especially when he understood why that was the price.
“...So you know.” His voice came out more like a growl than anything else.
The member of the Rahk Guild did not respond, the answer clear as day.
What the man was referring to was something he hoped hadn’t made the rounds around the planet yet.
It wasn’t that Rellia was back or even where she went exactly. No…it was that there were now thousands of Infernals on Acuva. The tension that brought was unimaginable. It wasn’t even 100% confirmed whether they were Infernals or not, but it was definitely more than 50% and that was more than enough.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
There wouldn’t be a single force with half a brain on Acuva who would dare touch them. Not unless they believe in suicidal acts and didn’t care if themselves, their families, and anyone or anything they ever cared about was killed or destroyed.
That’s what it meant to get on the wrong side of Infernals.
Needless to say, the Rahk would never accept such a request, and anyone who could pay the absurd asking price wouldn’t need to hire the Rahk for a task like that in the first place. The worth of a Universe? That was only a conversation beings strong enough to destroy Acuva with a stray palm were allowed to have.
The man now realizing how futile it was continue this meeting any longer did even bother saying another word and simply vanished, the box he was in immediately disappearing from where it was and wiping all traces of man’s presence away from it.
And for the man…the memory of the conversation he just had was wiped from his memory without him being able to do anything about it. Not that he wanted to, the memory wipe was standard procedure for dealings with the Rahk.
He would of course still remember who the Rahk were and what business they traded in, but apart from knowing whether his request was accepted or not, he would not remember the box, who he met with, or any other detail the Rahk deemed important for their own concealment.
Being an assassination guild was like the existence of a guarded bank vault.
Everyone knew the vault existed and that it was filled with money, but very few would actually attempt to rob it because it was heavily guarded. Some would definitely still try and perhaps maybe even succeed, but that came with significant effort.
Now if the bank was exposed, the guards missing for some reason, and the vault door wide open? It would suddenly become very easy for someone who wouldn’t have robbed the bank just for the effort it would require, to now feel emboldened to do just that.
That’s what an assassination guild was like. Or at least what the strong ones were like.
The strongest powers new of their existence, but due to all the effort they put into keeping their operations as secret as possible, along with the strength they built up over the years, getting rid of them wasn’t going to be an easy task.
Regardless, the man who left didn’t have his mind on that at all.
Instead…it was in a very dark place.
The man was City Lord Kizas, and like most Immortals…he was not an idiot…but that did mean he was not a fool.
He was knowledgeable enough to know that the road he was pursuing wouldn’t end well for him. Even if he managed to kill every last Infernal currently on Acuva, death would come for him sooner or later.
Honestly, he even knew that should ask anyone for advice on this matter, they would all tell him he was being an idiot. At the minimum, there would still be time to get revenge 1000 years from now if he planned it properly and if he stayed angry for that long.
To make matters worse, his son and guard were the ones in the fault! If he raised his son better or had been a better City Lord, none of this would have happened.
He knew all of that.
Yet…he already made up his mind.
Because for him, the Law of Pride was what he encompassed.
The law didn’t dictate how he behaved…but for him and any other Immortal, getting ‘closer’ to one’s law was extremely important if they ever had dreams of climbing higher. He knew full and well that if he gave into his pride at this very moment and acted like he truly wanted to deep down inside…it would be very beneficial for him.
So while he was not an idiot…heading down the path of clear destruction all because of a slight and a benefit for cultivation could only be considered foolish.
But City Lord Rizas would choose to be foolish today. He tried to get someone else to handle his dirty work for him. He was willing to deal wit the blowback if it came to it…but that option was taken away and no one else on the Planet that he had access to, would be able to carry out the same mission.
He would have to handle things himself.
